Summary: Our population is increasing at an inexorable speed. This is due to many reasons. The immediate causes of population hype are the migration of IDPs from the areas where the military operations are underway against the militants. Similarly, the devastating floods displaced millions of people which need rehabilitation. The lack of family planning is yet another reason. The major chunk of our population consists of youth which is a good fortune of the nation but due to lack of planning this increase in population wiped out all the available resources. Our youngsters are very talented and have much potential. They can play a great role in the development of our country provided they are given education and opportunities. The youth of our country needs special attention in education and other facilities. They should be saved from spoiling their qualities in unhealthy activities. There is a need of prudent planning and sound administration to make use of the depleting resources and cope with the challenge of increasing population.
Asma Ali: Assalam u Alekum dear listeners. I hope you are well wherever you are. Khan Baba is with us as usual: Khan Baba how are you feeling today?
Khan Baba: I am good but there are lots of problems. I do not know which one to solve first. My neighbor Said Wali asked me to find Job for his son. I went to the city but when I saw the rush of traffic, it was horrible. It took a long time for me to reach my friend. When I met my friend, I told him to give some job to my neighborâs son in his factory, but he told me that the factory is closed from about 6 months and there are lots of applications for Jobs from other people. All of them are unemployed, however, when the factory starts working then I will inform you. So I couldnât find a job for him.
Asma Ali: Khan Baba; how much he is educated?
Khan Baba: he has graduated.
Asma Ali: you didnât tell him that how much rush is there in Peshawar and the population has increased so much, therefore it is too much difficult to find a job.
Khan Baba: next time I will take him with me and will show him how much difficult it is to find a job.
Asma Ali: The majority of the population in our country is young generation, but there are no resources and facilities for our young generation to make progress in their lives. Industries are closed; resources are less and there is no proper policy to provide facilities and opportunities for youth. So what will our young generation do in such a situation when there are no opportunities for them?
Usma Ali: it is true that there are problems and our youth is facing troubles, there are no such resources for them to utilize their energies and to make progress in their lives. There is no proper policy adopted so far to provide opportunities to youth in exploring their potential. Therefore, there is a need of proper strategy and the people sitting in the assemblies should make policy for better utilization of the energies of young generation, otherwise they will use their potential in unhealthy activities. They can also fall into the wrong hands and they may get involved in criminal activities. Therefore it is the responsibility of our leaders to provide the young generation with opportunities where they can properly utilize their energies and could bring betterment in their lives.
Khan Baba: when there were no jobs for us, we used to play games and waste our time in useless activities. I believe that our youth is full of potential and if they are provided with facilities then I am sure they will make progress in their lives but if they cannot find opportunities then ultimately they will get involved in criminal activities.
Asma Ali: Jasmine, do you agree with Khan Baba?
Jasmine: yes I do, because there is no proper policy in Pakistan for young generation to utilize their energies. I believe the unit of improvement in every socio-political system is youth but we should not always complain about policies because as it is said that âdonât waste your time in improving your weaknesses; try to play with your strengthâ. So if we could not find a job then then we should not stop our struggle. Our youth should voluntarily participate in social activities. When I was in the US, I saw the people helping each other and they were not asking the government to help them in their daily works. You don't need to ask others for help instead you should help yourself by participating in healthy social activities.
Asma Ali: Khan Baba do you know that Jasmine studied her first term of BBA in United States therefore we will ask about her experiences of studying abroad?
Khan Baba: itâs good to know that she has been abroad for her studies. It shows that our country has potential.
Usman Ali: if we look into the western countries, most of the people over there are not government employees but there are lots of jobs in the private sector. Most of the people find their jobs in the private sector instead of the public sector. There are shops, industries, factories and other private sectors who offer reasonable jobs for the people over there, so I would like to say that we should also make improvement in the private sector to provide alternative sources for our people.
Khan Baba: in our country people doesn't give importance to private sector job and I think that the private sector would also be a good source because one only need to earn money through legal methods but unfortunately there is a very unfriendly environment for industry, factory or any other private business in our country so how can we find a job in the private sector?
Usman Ali: Khan Baba the reason behind all this is that in our country the problems exceed resources. The population is increasing rapidly but there is no proper planning for controlling the population explosion therefore, we will face many problems. However, we should not lose hope and keep struggling for betterment in our dearest country.
Asma Ali: Jasmeen; what role the women of our society can play in the development of this country?
Jasmeen: I was the first female in my family who is getting educated on such high level. The basic problem in our society is that the people do not believe in women, they think that they could not do anything is social progress while their role is reduced in social process. However, I believe that there is no difference in the potential of both genders. Though there are many impediments in our country for women but these could be removed with the passage of time. When I was in the States, we usually discussed these issues in our debates and we came to a point that somehow the women will get its rightful place in our country but it would take us time to realize the true potential of our women and if we succeeded in exploring the true potential of our youth then we could be able to meet the shoulders with developed countries. There should be no different between women and men. There is need of proper planning inside the system that can remove these impediments and People should not wait for others (politicians, leaders etc.) to come and solve their problems instead they should help themselves.
Asma Ali: the elections are coming and the people think that if they give their vote to a candidate who they know, so he or she may give him some personal benefits?
Jasmeen: yes, and why do we need leaders or politicians? I believe everyone itself is a leader and he can solve his own problems better than anyone else. If we can improve our system by ourselves then why should we follow leaders or politicians? So we can make it better through our struggle.
Asma Ali: we have reports from Peshawar by Salman Ahmad about the population problem.
Report#1
Salman Ali: Peshawar, once known as the âcity of flowersâ. Today, the clouds of terror are waving over the city due to two major issues of terrorism and population explosion. There has been a rapid increase in the population of the city in recent time which has caused many problems for the people. Mr. Sadat-UL-lah (social worker) told us about the causes and effects of increase in population in Peshawar city that;
Sadat-UL-lah: Peshawar is capitol city which offers opportunities and facilities to its residents therefore the people are attracted by these resources because there is a lack of facilities in rural areas of KP. So the people from the villages have migrated to Peshawar city for employment opportunities and facilities offered by the city. Another problem that I see is the migration of refugees from Afghanistan because this city is near to PAK-AFGHAN border. So this unwanted increase in population has caused environmental pollution which on one hand has damaged the natural beauty of the city while on the other hand it has reduced the resources of the city to minimum level. Another effect of population explosion is that the cultivable land adjacent to the city is now used for construction schemes which will badly affect our Agriculture sector.
Salman Ahmad : the effectees of military operation (militant groups) in KP and FATA migrated to Peshawar and other settled areas of KP which on one hand has increased militant attacks in the city while on the other hand such a massive increase in population has reduced employment opportunities which has also caused the increase in the crime rate of the city.
Kamran Khan (local journalist): increase in population has reduced natural resources, the damaged natural beauty of the city and increased the crime rate. The safety of the people is at risk. The government should develop a strategy to control the population explosion and should provide alternative sources to the people that can meet their needs.
Salman Ahmad: The rapid increase in population and slow progress of developmental works has increased the rush in Peshawar that has affected the routine life of residents of the city.
Kadim Ali: due to rush it has become very much difficult to move patients to hospitals. It is also very difficult for people to reach their offices on time because of the roadblocks created by rush in the city. These people cannot even reach their homes on time but they have no other way because of the increase in unemployment.
Arab Tahir ( Provincial GS, ANP): These developmental works were given to PDA and KDA but due to security threats from terrorist the concentration of KP government was focused on the control of law and order situation, therefore, these schemes could not be completed in due time.
Salman Ahmad: Major causes for increase in population include improper family planning, flow of IDPs from FATA and Migration of people from villages to city due to lack of facilities in rural areas of KP. People of Peshawar city want the provincial government to take solid steps and develop a strategy to control population explosion in the city.
Salman Ahmad, CRSS Peshawar city.
Asma Ali: what are the effects of these migration to the host city and its residents? How much the city is affected by the migration of people from rural areas (especially the migration of IDPs from FATA)
Jasmeen: it produces adverse effects on the city and its residents because of the cultural differences and other issues related to IDPs but these people donât have any other option. Therefore, it is the responsibility of government to provide safe shelters to these migrants adjacent to their areas where basic facilities could be made available for them.
Usman Ali: Peshawar is badly affected due to the displacement of people from FATA (where a military operation is held and people left their homes due to unrest in their areas) and flow of Afghan refugees into the city. This increase in population has increased the burden on schools, hospitals and other basic facilities centers which on one hand has affected the routine life of the residents while on the other hand it is very difficult to facilitate them all. Beside that it has increased rush in the city which is also another major issue. However, there is no planning to control this flow and provide facilities to these people.
Khan Baba: though all these displaced people are our brothers, but if we have no resources then how could we facilitate them. Some of the people inside these refugees and IDPs may be criminal or they could become criminal due to lack of opportunities for them.
Asma Ali: we have a caller.
Caller#1: Mukamil shah (gulbahar), your program is quite appreciable and I would like to say that letâs go be by phone ( forget the past), the time of election is near. So this is the time that all the people of Pakistan should go for casting their vote and we should select true and honest leadership that could truly solve our real issues and help us in establishing sustainable peace in the region. If there is peace, there is development. Peace let us to explore the opportunities and make improvements in our lives. Life could be normal if there is peace. So I would request to all my sisters and brothers that they should cast their vote and send their true representative to assemblies.
Asma Ali: our caller is right because all that we need is âpeaceâ. Peace could lead us to development and betterment in our lives.
Khan Baba: that is why I told you that we should select honest leadership therefore; we need to cast our vote on the basis of national interest.
Asma Ali: poverty increases child labor, what could be done to eradicate child labor from our society?
Jasmine: in backward areas the birth ratio is higher but the people donât know about child rights and they donât know how much energies it could take to raise a child. There is a lack of awareness among the people; therefore, people need more awareness and education. It is true that child labor is vast issue and it is very difficult to eradicate it because when you ask people that they should send their Childs to schools, they reply that if they send their child to school then who will earn for them. So we should think of other better options that could reduce child labor in our country.
Caller#2:
Paves: Khan Baba, to whom we should cast our vote?
Khan Baba: select honest candidate.
Imam Ali: Khan Baba, you know election commission has banned the use of vehicles for transporting voters on the election day.
âAsma Ali: we have report from Inamullah about child labor
Report#2
Inamullah: âmy name is Ashraf-ud-din, I belong to Bajour agency and I left my school therefore, I am working in hotelâ there are many children like Ashraf-ud-din, who have left their studies and are working in hotels, shops and other places. According to social activists the population of the world is increasing at high speed however, in Pakistan, with this increase in population the resources are decreasing which is an alarming situation.
Shahid Zaman: if we do not properly plan for the control of population explosion then we could be facing terrible problems in future. The recent increase in militancy has loaded the cities with people which on one side have increased security risks in the city while on the other side it has engulfed the available resources. We need to promote awareness among the people about the chaos that could be caused by population explosion.
Inamullah: Shahid someone told us that there are many reasons for the increase in population.
Shahid Zaman: the people are not fully aware about the issue and the education ratio in the country is very low. Therefore we need to aware the masses and if we use our masques as a community awareness center to tell the people about family planning then we would be able to control the increase in population. Unfortunately religion has fallen into the hands of the wrong people who are using religion for their own specific purpose that is why it has become very difficult to do proper planning however, we need proper planning for the counseling of people and religious personalities could be very much helpful in this respect.
Kamran Bangash (senior journalist): I believe that increase in population increases manpower of the country so if we utilize our resources in a proper manner then this increase would be in our favor. If we look at china, they have taken benefits from their manpower to speed up their development. Therefore, our leaders must develop proper policies to encourage industries in the country which will provide opportunities for the people who are skillful, educated, hence we will take benefits from an increase in population instead of making it trouble for us. There is lots of talent in our country so if we can utilize our resources in a proper manner then we would be able to use our talented manpower for the development of this country.
Inamullah: Ulama, civil society and government must mutually work for the promotion of awareness among the people. If they work in cooperation with each other then we would be able to control population explosion.
Inamullah Khan, CRSS Kohat.
Asma Ali: we have a message from Engineer Amir Muqam.
Amir Muqam: vote is important because through vote people select their representatives and the people expect them to solve their problems both on national and international level. I would suggest the people that they should look to party manifesto and the capability of the candidate that how much he could be effective in looking into the true matters of the people to represent them on a national level and solve them. How much he would be helpful in the establishment of peace and how much he would be helpful in the development of the country.
Caller#3:
Amjid Khan (Kohat): I believe that increase in population is not bad because if we look at our neighbor countries, their population is much more than us but they are developed and prosperous. So if we plan properly and initiate developmental schemes for providing basic facilities to the people in rural areas then no one will migrate from village to city and there will be no load over the cities.
Asma Ali: the caller was right that our neighbor countries are more populated than us but in the run of progress we are still far behind them, what is the reason behind this?
Usman Ali: democracy never sustained in our country and most of the time armed forces have taken the charge of the country. So if we could let the democracy to prevail in our country then it could have been in our favor because democracy is the system which is self-correcting. It could have been possible for our political leadership to make policies that could have encouraged industries to create opportunities for the people and we could be more developed. Therefore, elections are coming and people should cast their vote.
Asma Ali: if government provides facilities to the people of rural areas then the people will not come to urban areas and cities would not be overburdened. Elections are coming and if elections are contested peacefully and fairly and the people succeed to bring their honest leadership to the assemblies then there would be development in our country.
Khan Baba: I agree but if the democracy prevails.
Asma Ali: what are the expectations of people from coming elections? And what role our youth can play in coming elections?
Usman Ali: exactly the peoples' expectations are high. If we look at the political scenario the role of youth has become very much important in coming elections that is why most of the political parties are focusing on the young generation. They are potential voters and the youth also seems to be pretty excited for their participation in the coming elections.
Jasmeen: I agree with Usman Ali, but some people donât cast their vote because they think that their vote is not important. I would like to suggest to them that they should cast their vote for the candidate who can meet their expectations.
Usman Ali: it is very good sign that our women are taking part in the electoral process. The best example of which is Miss. Badam Zari who is contesting for a NA seat from the Bajour agency (FATA). It shows that our country is on the path of development.
Asma Ali: Thanks for your time, stay blessed Goodbye.
