In various regions around the world, the United States suffers from a significant deficit in operational awareness. In areas like the Middle East, reliable information regarding local attitudes and concerns towards U.S. policy are often unknown or overlooked. U.S. actions and policies can sometimes unintentionally incite anger and resentment among segments of the world community. Additionally, the DoD has scarce few individuals who understand the cultural complexities of a given region and know...

Validation of safety-critical software requirements is a difficult and frequently misunderstood task. It answers the question of are we building the right product? and is essential to Software Engineering. However, validation is often confused with verification activities, or simply left as a final tick-in-the-box just prior to delivery. Current models for validation cannot satisfy the unique aspects of safety-critical software where building the right safety product is paramount. Software...

Potential vorticity thinking has been used to infer the balanced dynamics of predominately synoptic-scale weather features. This is accomplished through the use of the invertibility principle in which the wind and mass fields can be retrieved from the three-dimensional distribution of potential vorticity (PV). The most common use of PV thinking has been applied to various forms of synoptic-scale cyclogenesis and the sensitivity of certain weather features had on the subsequent development....

The Navy's future use of shallow-draft high-speed vessels has provoked questions regarding the effects of resulting ship motion on crews' performance. Sopite syndrome, a commonly overlooked subset of motion sickness, is responsible for lethargy, fatigue, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating and numerous other performance-diminishing symptoms in shipboard crewmembers who appear to be adapted to vessel motion (Graybiel & Knepton, 1976). Since its discovery in 1976, no physically measurable...

This thesis presents two methods for determining the bearing of a source generating a Very High Frequency (VHF) bridge-to-bridge radio transmission. Using principles of interferometry, one can utilize the calculated phase difference between the received signal at multiple antennas to determine the Angle of Arrival of the detected transmission. This translation of phase difference to Angle of Arrival is accomplished using equations based on signal properties and geometry. The theoretical method...

In this paper, we examine the wavelength tuning limitations of type-II antimonide lasers containing InAs/InGaSb/InAs quantum wells. Wavelength tuning is accomplished by varying the thickness of the InAs electron wells while keeping all else fixed. In principle, these wells can be tuned from lambda approximately equal 2.5 m out to far IR wavelengths by increasing the thickness of the InAs layers. However, a practical upper limit of lambda approximately equal 9.5 micronmeters is set due to the...

The vertical transport of heat by the diffusive layer in the Arctic thermocline is a critical element of the high-latitude climate, and yet, after decades of research, the extant estimates remain highly controversial. Laboratory-based estimates of vertical heat fluxes originating from the thermohaline staircases of the thermocline are typically on the order of 0.1W/m2. This study suggests that these laboratory experiments underestimate the vertical heat fluxes and exceed their calculations by...

Fault-tolerant storage systems spread data redundantly across a set of storage-nodes in an effort to preserve and provide access to data despite failures. One difficulty created by this architecture is the need for a consistent view, across storage-nodes, of the most recent update. Such consistency is made difficult by concurrent updates, partial updates made by clients that fail, and failures of storage-nodes. This thesis demonstrates a novel approach to achieving scalable, highly...

The struggle between development and conservation remains salient with today's focus on global climate change. This conflict is seen most clearly in the Brazilian Amazon. The international conservation community and developed nations advocate conservation in the Amazon, while developing nations fight for progress. Conservationists expect international organizations, developed nations, and domestic grassroots organizations to pressure the Brazilian government to conserve the Amazon. Development...

Several novel phase-modulated fiber optic links for analog or microwave signal transport up to at least 20 GHz frequency are theoretically developed and experimentally demonstrated. Each link uses a linearization technique exploiting the Lithium Niobate modulator's electro-optic anisotropy between orthogonal crystallographic axes that has not previously been applied to phase-modulated links. This technique and its variants suppress the dominant third-order distortion product to extend the...

In this project we expanded the theory of compressive sensing and explored the connection of CS to advanced optical imaging systems. In regard to theory we incorporated a Hidden Markov Tree signal model into existing CS theory and produced an algorithm for fast signal recover. We physically implemented CS on a single-pixel imaging testbed and analyzed its performance against existing multiplexing schemes. The insight of CS theory and experience in CS implementation culminated with the creation...

Since the 34-day war in 2006 between Hezbollah and Israel, psychological warfare has re-emerged as a topic of interest. Many experts have asked the question: how could a nonstate actor defeat Israel -- a regional superpower -- in such a short amount of time? Hezbollah also defeated Israel in 2000 when it forced the state to unilaterally withdraw from southern Lebanon after an 18-year occupation. Although Hezbollah's psychological warfare strategy contributed greatly to these two successes,...

I believe a consensus exists in the Administration, the Congress, and the country on the basic U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf region. The unimpeded flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz is a vital interest and critical to the economic health of the Western world; another very important interest is freedom of navigation for nonbelligerent shipping in and through the gulf. The most important development in recent years is that a significant shift has occurred in what the Soviets call the global correlation of forces.
