A mathematical model for a real time simulation of a tilt rotor aircraft was developed. The mathematical model is used for evaluating aircraft performance and handling qualities. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to determine the aerodynamic heating created by gaps in the reusable surface insulation (RSI) thermal protection system (TPS) for the space shuttle. The effects of various parameters of the RSI on convective heating characteristics are described. The wind tunnel tests provided a data base for accurate assessment of gap heating. Analysis and correlation of the data provide methods for predicting heating in the RSI gaps on the space shuttle.

Experimental aerodynamic investigations of the configuration 4 space shuttle orbiter were conducted in the 14-inch trisonic wind tunnel during November and December 1973. Elevon, aileron, bodyflap, speedbrake, rudder effectiveness, and effects of ventral fins were investigated at angles of attack from -10 deg to 40 deg, angles of sideslip from -10 deg to +10 deg, and Mach numbers from 0.6 to 4.96. A system for determining the mass loss in vacuum and for collecting the outgassed compounds was developed. Outgassing data, derived from tests at 398 K (125 degrees C) for 24 hours in vacuum as per ASTM E 59577, are compiled for numerous materials for spacecraft use.
