The importance of hardening the SAFEGUARD System to EMP was established in the turbulent arguments of complexity and potential vulnerability of any ABM system during the deployment debates of the late 1960s. During the course of the considerable effort to achieve the operational Grand Forks Tactical Site, a unique problem was posed by the over 40 miles of buried conduits which formed part of the shielding for the control and power cables connected to each missile cell. Since these conduits were...

Laser resonators using roof reflectors with 90 deg - alpha roof angles ( alpha small and positive) are analyzed geometrically when the roof edges at opposite ends of the resonator are aligned either parallel or perpendicular (crossed). Stability conditions, involving reflector dimensions, are found which specify a maximum axis length for the existence of stable rays. In the parallel-roof case, stable rays are shown to be ring-type, making any given number of round-trips before spatially...

This memorandum suggests that the technical limitations of modern antitank guided missiles, developing countermeasures, and Soviet tactics may result in such weapons systems being a far less useful means of providing NATO with an adequate defense against conventional aggression than was originally thought. The author cautions that technology must not be asked to do too much and that NATO should expect no windfall defense savings as it equips its armies with ATGM's. He concludes that while the...

Films of 1100 EW Nafion were coated onto glassy carbon electrode surfaces and these chemically modified electrodes were used to characterize the ion exchange selectivity of the polymer. This was accomplished by allowing electrodes to equilibrate with solutions of various electroactive counterions and then determining the quantity of ion incorporated into the films coulometrically. These data were used to calculate both ion exchange partition and selectivity coefficients. Ion exchange...

In this paper the authors propose a mathematical framework for unifying and generalizing the three principal data models, i.e., the relational, hierarchical and network models. Until recently most work on database theory has focussed on the relational model, mainly due to its elegance and mathematical simplicity compared to the other models. Some of this work has pointed out various disadvantages of the relational model, among them its lack of semantics and the fact that it forces the data to...

In 1981 the U.S. military began assuming a greater role in the war on drugs, on both the domestic and international fronts. Since that time, the supporting role has dramatically increased and active military involvement along American borders is now commonplace. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 (PCA) has served as the primary statutory guard against the use of the U.S. military in domestic law enforcement. With this increased military participation in a number of domestic incidents, questions...

Understanding of the American approach to warfare begins with historian Russell Weigley's classic work, The American Way of War. He concluded that the American style of waging war centered primarily on the idea of achieving a crushing military victory over an opponent. Americans - not unlike many of their European counterparts - considered war an alternative to bargaining, rather than part of an ongoing bargaining process, as in the Clausewitzian view. Their concept of war rarely extended...

This work explores the relationship between corporate and economic growth within the United States since 1929. The corporate share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) climbed from 52.5 percent in 1929 to 59.7 percent in 2005. Depending upon the years included and the method of estimating respective growth rates, this increasing share of GDP accounts for up to 14 percent of real domestic corporate growth. However, the domestic corporate share of GDP can never exceed 100 percent. Subject to numerous...

Despite widespread emphasis on the importance of winning the war of ideas in recent strategic literature, one finds few analytical studies of wars of ideas as such. With that in mind, this monograph offers a brief examination of four common types of wars of ideas, and uses that as a basis for analyzing how the United States and its allies and strategic partners might proceed in the current war of ideas. Simply put, a war of ideas is a clash of visions, concepts, and images, and -- especially --...

The temperature range over which austenitizing took place was accurately determined by metallographic and analytical techniques. Also, the dissolution of the preponderance of carbide coincides with a 'leveling-off' trend in mechanical property...

The effects of quadratic non-linearities in the single particle equations of motion on electron orbits in the modified betatron are studied. Strong coupling of the two modes of betatron oscillation is found to occur for a particular value of the ratio B sub theta/B sub z, unless the gradient in the field index takes a certain value. In general, in the azimuthally symmetric case, the mode coupling appears to be quite harmless. When field and/or focusing errors are present the mode coupling...

This report describes the development of a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. Active mode-locking was achieved by modulation of a multiple quantum well (MAW) device by Stark shifting the absorption of the quantum wells. The MQW device could also act as a saturable absorber, so that the laser could be passively mode-locked. Pulses as short as 11 pico seconds were produced. The cavity was injection mode-locked at both the fundamental and second harmonic period of the cavity round-trip time.

Traditionally, the interior ballistic (IB) modeling of mortars has been difficult to achieve because a mortar projectile contains certain energetic components internal to the tail boom. After ignition, high pressure generated by the igniter causes the canister to burst and release hot gases and burning particles into the larger chamber called the launch tube. Subsequently, any external charges ignite and produce gases which accelerate the projectile. A recent advancement to the IBHVG2 code...

The review of a particular theoretical tire dynamics model is presented leading to a prediction of side thrust as the result of combined slip angle and camber angle with load as the major parameter. An experimental program to test these predictions has been accomplished using 7.00-16 military tires mounted on a solid axle, unsprung toe-in trailer. The theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental results.
