Fuel System Icing Inhibitor (FSII) is composed of DiEthylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether (DiEGME). FSII provides fuel system icing and microbial growth protection to aviation fuel systems. The current FSII specification requirement for JP-5 aviation fuel is 0.10-0.15% by volume. The lower use limit for naval aircraft per NAVAIR 00-80T-109 is 0.03% by volume. The goals of this study were to determine if the current specification requirement could be decreased while still providing satisfactory icing...

Lago Agrio is a hidden ungoverned territory or black spot in eastern Ecuador that is a central node to the many security related issues of Ecuador. For the last two decades, there is proof that this region is being used to support illicit activity and is growing in importance. This almost lawless area is a haven for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and Transnational Organized Criminals (TOC), serving as a major hub in a pipeline that moves not only cocaine and weapons, but also...

The objectives of this project are to use the fully coupled COAMPS to investigate the effect of air-ocean coupling, the prediction barrier problem near the Maritime Continent (MC), and the impact of convection permitting resolution on the MJO structure. Many coupled and uncoupled global seasonal prediction models as well as global NWP models have low skill in forecasting the MJO propagation from the Indian Ocean to the Maritime Continent. Herein, we present direct measurements of ion dynamics of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIm-TFSI) in an operating EDLC with electrodes composed of porous nanosized carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) and non-porous onion-like carbons (OLCs) with the use of in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry. For CDC electrodes, IL ions (both cations and anions) were directly observed entering and exiting CDC nanopores during charging and discharging of the EDLC. Conversely,...

Retention and attrition rates in higher education have long been a focus of research. This paper presents findings of a single case study, undertaken in a School of Education, which identify important strategies that have led to attrition of five to eight per cent, compared with 18 per cent cross the education sector in Australia (Department of Education, Science and Training, 2004). The main objective of this paper is to put forward the idea that the bipolar challenges that educational leaders are confronted with can be addressed instead as complementary opportunities. The research paradigm employed in this study is qualitative and the research approach consists mainly of literature review from books, journals and mass media, triangulated with experiential learning from my service in education over 35 years. My first question on approaching this volume was, What is strategic stability, or What are the different meanings of strategic stability? My second was, Is strategic stability always, usually, or seldom, a good thing? My third was, When strategic stability is a good thing, how do we arrange to bring it about? Is it a weapons result, a diplomatic result, or a result of a common understanding? I was brought up on the stability of mutual deterrence, half a century ago, and it was not all that...

Our objective was to determine whether the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), its nonappropriated fund instrumentalities (NAFIs), and its supporting nonprofit organizations were properly accepting, recording, reporting, and disbursing donations, gifts, and nonappropriated funds (NAFs). Response to intervention (RTI) is a framework in which interventions are implemented mostly in general education classes to resolve academic difficulties and help to mitigate contextual variables (i.e., lack of instruction, socio economic status, cultural differences, etc.) as an explanation for academic failure. The paper makes a contrastive study on the performance of verb-noun collocation given by Chinese EFL learners based on the CLEC, ICLE and BNC. First, all the concordance lines with the token "ability" in the CLEC were collected and analyzed. Then, they were tagged manually in order to sort out the sentences in the verb-noun collocation structure. After that, a contrast was made between the data in the three corpora. The study found that there was a distinct gap between the use of...

In the winter of 2009, Washington, DC, workers faced the prospect of a difficult commute due to record-setting snowfalls. But thousands of the city's Metrorail riders found the public transportation system fully functional, thanks in part to a NASA technology invented years before. Just like trains, an airplane must be snow- and ice-free to ensure safe travel. Traditionally, fluids containing a compound called ethylene glycol have been used to inhibit ice on planes. In 1992, however, the US Air...

During the period of 12/19/12 02/02/13 of Contract # W911NF-13-C-0017 we performed the following. We developed a ROC (Receiver Operator Characteristic) curve for benzenethiol (BT) on a polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) substrate coated with gold nanoparticles (iFyber substrate). The ROC curve indicates detection levels around 2 x 10-8 ppm of the CWA agent simulant. This is 200x above the target detection level in air. The difficulty and pathway to improved detection is discussed.
