This crime drama about a playboy lawyer trying to make good as an assistant DA should be used in film schools as a textbook example of how not to direct and edit a feature film. Don’t blame the cast members. Their task was hopeless. The IMDB 5.4 rating is extremely generous. Directed by Vin Moore. Released in 1936.   2 minutes are missing.

“The acting is what is frightening” (IMBD review quote). A mediocre cast that includes many non-professionals in an absurd screenplay meant to cash in on the ‘50s reincarnation craze. (Remember Bridey Murphy?) It’s stitched together by lackluster, static direction. On the plus side some of the NYC location cinematography is pretty good. If it wasn’t so tedious it might have been so-bad-it’s-good fun. IMDB rating 5.0. Produced and directed by W Lee Wider. Released in 1956. Complete...

Saturday matinees (kiddie matinees) were a summertime institution in thousands of US movie theaters. They lasted into the late ‘50s when they were finally killed off by Saturday morning children’s TV programming. These three-hour extravaganzas for the cap pistol set consisted of a jumble of multiple cartoons (that often were racially insensitive), serial chapters and one or more feature films that always were B-westerns. Parents and girls (eeu!) weren’t banned, but I don’t remember...

In keeping with the season in the US (and maybe in the UK) the 2am Theater presents two lively political comedies -- one from each side of the Atlantic. First up are previews of coming attractions followed by a cartoon. Then a Scottish bi-election literally goes to the dogs in “Storm in a Teacup,” costarring Rex Harrison and Vivien Leigh. Next in “The Dark Horse,” desperate for a suitable candidate a deadlocked party convention  nominates a political novice who later turns out to be...

“Plot loaded with loose ends” “Hollywood’s worst 'Blob' entry” (IMDB reviews quotes). You are expecting ‘50s drive-in sci-fi, but what you get is a low-budget, mostly set-bound jungle adventure in Mexico with a cast which includes African hyenas, Indonesian fruit bats, Australian birds, a harmless snake on a string (to make it look like a cobra) and a supposedly deadly iguana. “Not surprisingly it’s crap” (IMDB review quote). Highway hookers in laughably awful early-forties exploitation. A low-budget anti-classic with a cast of acting class washouts that will make you long for an Ed Wood movie -- any Ed Wood movie! Don’t say you weren’t warned. IMDB rating 4.4. Produced and Directed by Patrick Carlyle. Released in 1941 Complete print (unfortunately) AKA “Hitchhike to Hell” “Going My Way, Mister?” “Highway Girls”
Topics: Exploitation, melodrama, prostitution, hitchhiking, Charles Maurice, Don Hirst, Diane Winthrop

Very enjoyable” “Better than average propaganda” “A British take on ‘Ninotchka’?” (IMDB reviews quotes). A major wartime propaganda epic meant to foster better Anglo-Russian relations, which unlike the similar American film “Mission to Moscow” doesn’t go off the deep end. The lengthy story begins with a Russian nautical engineer’s pre-war visit to London. Its solid cast is headed by Laurence Olivier. The production values are lavish considering the time and place. “Good little thriller, well worth a watch” “Great atmosphere, some suspenseful moments” (IMDB reviews quotes). A low-budget crime drama with unnecessary comic relief. Directed by Jack Donohue. Released in 1948. Two minutes are missing.

“Hollywood hooey from Gainsborough” “Mad, bad and wonderful” “Amiable tosh” “What a hoot!” (IMDB reviews quotes). A dashing young Englishman with amnesia (Granger) thinks he is a Spanish gypsy. A real Spanish gypsy (Kent) supports his delusion. Meanwhile back in jolly-old his newly-destitute fiancee (Crawford) is threatened by an evil suitor (Price). From this point you’re on your own. My work here is done. Kidding aside, don’t blame the direction, cast or production. All of...

“Splendidly exceptional” “Solid thriller with a great concept” “Surprisingly fun” “Delightful mystery” “A neglected masterpiece” (IMDB reviews quotes). This print is sharper, cleaner and with better contrast than the existing IA copy. A truly unique mystery that’s well-produced and fun thanks to skillful direction, David Lean’s tight editing and a solid all-British cast. Pre-code. In another year the bedroom scene wouldn’t have gotten past the US censors. Recommended....
