The Mysterious Traveler was a mystery drama anthololgy which ran for nine years (1943-1952). Each week listeners were invited to ride a passenger train in the company of a mysterious stranger (Maurice Tarplin), who always had a dark and uncanny tale for a willing ear. Created by the writing team of Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan, the series was popular enough to engender two 'spin-off' series—The Sealed Book and The Strange Dr. Weird. Both spin-offs produced no originals, only remakes of MT...

"The freelance investigator with the  action-packed expense account ..." Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar  was one of the longest running radio detective shows, with 14 years of intrigue and adventure. It was well received and became one of the last drama on the air when radio interests waned in the 1960s. Johnny Dollar worked for the Universal Adjustment Bureau, flying from Mexico to swamps to California ghost towns. He would recover furs and diamonds for a cut of the goods, bodyguard...

One of the longest running young-adult-oriented old radio shows during the golden age of radio was the widely popular "Dick Tracy." The series aired over a period of 14 years, from 1934 - 1948, and was based on a newspaper comic strip. This juvenile police detective radio program began as a 15-minute show which was later extended to a full 30-minutes due to popular demand. The series’ central theme was crime-fighting taken to a higher level by the many mind boggling plot twists the...

The Haunting Hour is a work-in-progress collection within the holdings of many serious Radio Collectors. From the meager available productions currently in circulation it's clear that the series was popular for its time, at the very least. With a known run of at least 52 unique scripts and more doubtful further 39 to 52 scripts, it would appear that the series was in demand for at least four years--in and out of syndication. Given the high quality of NBC Network voice talent in the circulating...

This is one of my favorite series. William Powell plays detective Richard Rogue. A seemingly womanizer in several episodes but tends to want to marry Betty, a reporter for a news paper. Every episode on this list is great. In almost every episode Rogue get’s clocked on the head and knocked out. He goes to Cloud 8 and talks with Eugor, his alter ego. Eugor is of course Rogue spelled backward. They have some interesting conversations. One of the highlights is on the episode titled “Lady with...

Hall of Fantasy started as a local series out of Utah. It found its way onto the airwaves sporadically from 1947 to 1952. This anthology was picked up for national syndication by the Mutual network and broadcast from mid-52 through mid-53. Written and directed by Richard Thorne, a prolific and talented writer and producer, this series is often overlooked, even by fans of OTR. It is unfortunate, since it provides some very unique and dramatic material; the acting in particular was superb. Early...

"Amos 'n' Andy" , one of the most popular and long-running radio programs of all time, was brought to television in the summer of 1951. The series was produced by Freemad Gosden and Charles Correll, the two actors who had created and starred in the radio version. Since they were white, and the entire cast of the show on television had to be black, a much ballyhooed search was held, over a period of four years, to find the right actors to play the parts. Only Ernestine Wade and Amanda...

Magic Island  was a science-fantasy radio serial syndicated in 1935. The series had 130 15-minute episodes, and all episodes have survived. The storyline followed wealthy Patricia Gregory as she ended her 14-year search in the South Pacific for her long lost daughter Joan. When Joan was one-year-old, the Gregory yacht was shipwrecked near the  30th parallel south . Lashed to a lifeboat, Joan was presumed lost by all but Patricia. In the opening episode, she receives a tip about a white girl...

Space Patrol was a highly successful franchise, packaged as a retro, juvenile serial featuring the adventures of the steely-jawed redoubtable Commander Buzz Corry and his wet-behind-the-ears sidekick Cadet Happy as they combat various 30th-century baddies across the Solar System and beyond. Originally a television series, the same actors reprised their roles for the radio version, which ran concurrently with the TV show from the fall of 1950 to the spring of 1955. [It is unclear when the radio...

X Minus One aired on NBC from 24 April 55 until 9 January 58 for a total of 124 episodes with one pilot or audition story. There was a revival of the series in 1973 when radio was attempting to bring back radio drama and it lasted until 1975. The show occupied numerous time slots through out its run in the 50’s and thus was never able to generate a large following. X Minus One was an extension of Dimension X which aired on NBC from 1950-51. The first fifteen scripts used for X Minus One were...
