Many people are surprised when they find out they can make incredibly beautiful (and large) coves moldings on the tablesaw.  I know I was! In this episode, I'll give you a rundown on the process for creating both symmetrical and asymmetrical coves. I'll show you several ways to set up for this operation, but my favorite involves the use of a parallelogram jig that was inspired by a Fine Woodworking Article by Stuart Sabol (subscription required). His jig is primarily for setup only, so I...

In the years since I started woodworking, I have only had a few close calls. Fortunately, most of my injuries have been minor. Most of those injuries took place early in my career before I knew anything about anything. This video will show you some of the stupid mistakes I've made, what happened to me, and how I avoid repeating those mistakes.

Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/tablesaw-experience/  Whenever I have a new student in the shop, I try to convey what if feels like when something is going wrong on the tablesaw.  This may seem like an abstract idea, but knowing how to identify a problem before it goes too far could give you that extra second or two you need to prevent disaster.   The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment...

One thing I do every time I approach a tool is think of the worst-case scenarios.  Its a bit gruesome to let your imagination take you there, but there is a good reason for it. This simple mental exercise not only raises your awareness of the potential dangers, but essentially shows you exactly what you need to do to prevent injury.

Woodworker's Safety Week is finally here!  No it doesn't mean that this is the only week we have to be safe, haha.  Obviously, our shops are full of danger.  So its very important that we adopt the safest practices possible.  And with so many folks new to the hobby, its critical that we take a step back occasionally and focus on safety.  With the cooperation of the rest of our internet woodworking community, I hope we can create a whole series of blog posts, videos, audio programs and...

Outdoor finishes can be one of the trickiest types of wood finishes to master. Why? Because there is never a one size fits all solution. As woodworkers, we are used to dealing with the seasonal wood movement of our interior pieces.  But when one of our creations is destined to live outside, there is much more to consider.  Depending on your region's climate, your project could experience anything from snow and ice to hot desert sand storms. How the heck do we prepare for that?!?! Well, it is...

This video covers my initial impressions and experience with the Earlex Spray Station 5000 , an HVLP turbine. To sum up, I thought the Earlex did a darn good job spraying pretty much everything I put in it, including oil-based poly, water-based finishes, lacquer, and latex paint. I would probably recommend purchasing some of the smaller tip sets though, since they will increase performance on the water-based stuff. The 5000 does lack some of the spray controls typically found in higher-priced 3...

Only about 5% of the interview actually made it into the show, so there is plenty of good information here. Asa Christiana is the Editor of Fine WoodWorking Magazine . He gives us a lot of insight into the editorial process and how decisions are made. I also had the opportunity to ask him some of the questions that you guys wanted me to ask.  Enjoy!

After months of being harassed by my mother, its finally time to finish her laundry room cabinets.  With the cases already installed, all that's left to do is make the frame and panel doors.  The wood of choice here is hickory.  The weapon of choice?  Router bits.  Big ones!  So come with me on this little adventure as we learn some basic techniques for making a very important component of modern-day cabinetry, the raised-panel door.   Rockler Rail Coping Jig For rail and stile doors....

When assembling projects, nothing beats a wide and spacious dead flat surface.  And one of the easiest and most efficient ways to create a dead flat surface is by constructing what is known as a torsion box.  A torsion box is really nothing more than a grid-work with a skin on both sides.  This creates a very strong, yet light, structure that resists warping and sagging.  Its very similar to the concept behind an airplane wing.  This episode covers the construction of the Torsion Box top...

I'll be the first to admit it: my turning skills are weak. Every time I visit my friend/mentor David Marks (an amazing turner), he reminds me that I could use his help. That's about the point that I find myself heading into his wood shed to admire his extensive collection.  It's not that I don't like turning. I find it quite relaxing. I just never seem to find the time or motivation to really dig into it. I have so many things I want to accomplish outside of turning that the lathe always seems...

Wenge Raised Panel The headboard's raised panel will be constructed from two pieces of wenge. The boards are milled flat and glued together using Dominos for alignment help. Once the glue was dry, I scraped the glue line and then drum-sanded the board nice and smooth. To make the raised profile, I used a standard raised panel bit with the back-cutter removed. This gives me a larger "tongue" to work with later. With several passes at the router table, the profile is looking good!  The...

For me, power carving is one of the most challenging aspects of woodworking. It all started back in 2003 when I got hooked on David Marks' show, Woodworks. On several occasions he would pull out a grinder and get all medieval on a beautiful piece of wood. The end result would be a beautifully sculpted creation that could only be called art. Not being a naturally artistic person myself, I was intimidated and intrigued by this process. Thankfully, my wife Nicole was thoughtful enough to arrange...

During the recent Dogon Platform Bed project , I had to glue a long bevel for the headboard and utilized glued-on cauls. I was a little nervous about the glue holding and thanks to 35 years of eating delicious pasta, I was able to react quickly and prevent a falling clamp from doing damage to the project. This gives me some inspiration to perhaps start a new blog extolling the virtues of a high carb diet with an Italian spin.

Back in Episode 146 , we made a simple classic cross-cut sled. That sled is probably the most-used accessory for my tablesaw. But in some cases, the workpiece exceeds the capacity of the sled.
