I recently renewed my Audible subscription and have been intently listening to the audiobook I downloaded from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's anthology, it boasts of being the complete works of HP Lovecraft and it is a most wonderful listen. The HPLHS have invested a considerable amount of time and effort to really make the stories shine, if shine be the right term for such sinister and otherworldly eldritch tales. If I were to read these weird tales rather than listen to them then I...

I've found myself fascinated with sleep lately, trying as I might to catch a meaningful and solid seven hours. I'm nearly there with my average over the last 28 days coming in a 6 hours and 55 minutes.  There has been a lot of emphasis on sleep, in music terms, recently too ... Max Richter's epic "Sleep" album, Hammock's "Songs for sleep" playlist on Spotify, and Sigur Ros presents Liminal Sleep ... are all music that I have listened to and gleefully consumed. I would,...

The seventh TWANG brings Cousin Silas' series of atmospheric ambient and experimental soundscapes, each recorded in a single take with no overdubs or edits, back into the deepest, darkest realms of space and place. Once more featuring 14 tracks from the original release and 2 further "bonus" tracks for this release, Twang Seven is another exemplary continuation of and addition to the Twang series. From the opening track - "The Crease in Time" - through to the final track -...

It's been a ridiculously long time since the last Dronescape ... I guess I don't want them to end and am unconsciously stretching them out so they'll last longer. These post-sixty minute longform pieces have become such an important part of my life, I just don't want the series to stop.  I know the Dronescapes have built up a bit of a following and to everyone who has or will buy them, I do promise to release the remaining pieces more often. But when you hear Cousin Silas' forty-first...

I think it was the original "Ballard Landscapes" on Shaun Blezard's seminal Earth Monkey Productions imprint that introduced me to the rabbit hole that is Cousin Silas' music. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since those days and my relationship with our Cousin Dave has flourished and developed in so many ways that I could never have foreseen. In short, I am proud to call him a friend and know, with absolute certainty, that weareallghosts would not be what it is without his...

Eraser Ears are on a roll and I am proud to present their latest album, "Vista 2 (waag_rel125).  "Vista 2" was recorded live at the Hybrid Festival, 21st September 2018; and features their wonderfully improvised, sonically powerful soundscapes that, in some way, remind me of  Tangerine Dream and REDSHIFT. As I wished before, for their first outing on WAAG, I wish again: to have been there ... at Vista ... soaking up the sounds as they were presented in real time. Who knows, it...

Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons do it again. With "The Fortean Project (waag_rel122)" they have created another album of dark and atmospheric soundscapes, an album that will soundtrack your wildest Cyclopean nightmares and provide aural accompaniment for your weirdest of unexplainable experiences. The sounds presented here are deliciously dark and seriously spooky, they have a vibrancy that fans of dark ambient will totally get. I, for one, love them and have spoken before about my...

Of all the music Cousin Silas has released, especially on weareallghosts, I am fondest of his longform pieces. I find his Dronescapes especially fascinating because they have a versatility about them: I listen to them at work when I need to find my flow and block out a busy, open-plan office; I listen to them on the train when I want to dig into a book and block out a busy carriage; I listen to them when I need to rest and block out the busyness of my home and/or my brain; They work for me on a...

I have a real fondness for Matthew VandenBrook and his uniquely particular (and particularly unique) version of experimental electronic music.  He pushes boundaries and, at times, challenges me within his prolific expressions ... often leaving me perplexed until (as much through exposure as epiphany) the lightbulb comes on and I get to see (hear) his music through his eyes (ears). "Flux" is such an album. I cannot begin to describe the sounds featured on "Flux", it truly...

After the warm reception of "Winterfylleth (waag_rel111)", I was eager to work with George L Smyth again and was delighted when he submitted this five-track album that was inspired by the heavenly bodies that easily define our concept of space: we look up in the night sky and can see the Bears or Orion's Belt, and in doing so we dream of what it would be like to be there. Space has always captured our imagination as humans ... the pioneering spirit of adventure, the unspoilt beauty...

I am a huge fan of the mid-seventies Tangerine Dream albums such as Phaedra and Rubycon. I love their sprawling nature and the twists and turns that these recordings take. I am also a big fan of the music of REDSHIFT. Albums like Ether and Halo have left an indelible mark on me. Again, I just adore their sprawling, apparently improvised soundscapes. It is in this context that I came to "Live at Vista" by Eraser Ears, a project involving Jaime Munárriz, a chap I've known for a wee...

waag_rel117 Leftovers. The tracks that make up this album were recorded during the week that Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons spent with Cousin Silas in deepest, darkest Yorkshire. That session, back in 2016, was a wonderful creative outpouring that spawned two albums celebrating Arthur Machen's influential weird fiction. The tracks were recorded at the same time but didn't seem to fit with the theme: they were a little too out there, a bit too noisy, slightly too space for the more earthy nature of...

It has been a while since dronescape 039 ... nearly six months, in fact, and in that time Cousin Silas has released a couple of longform pieces inspired by the Berlin School of electronic music. He's also released the final selection of music created by him, in partnership with Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; and he's began to rerelease his legendary TWANG! series. He's also been rather prolific on other netlabels, for example with two collections of "Short Stories" on the fab studio 4632....

I really enjoyed listening to Cousin Silas' first voyage into Berlin School style longform electronic adventures, Unlimited Boundaries (waag_rel114) ... I still do, in fact, and never thought a follow-up would be so hot on its heels.       Galactic Procession (waag_rel116) follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor albeit with a sound that is, again, reminiscent of Virgin-era Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. It isn't a rehashing of the work that's come before ... either Silas or...

waag_drs039 It has been a while since dronescape 038 and in that time waag has released a number of different flavours of our favourite Cousin's ambient music: remixed, one-take guitar-orientated, dub, progressive, and atmospheric; and whilst I love all that he releases, I do have a soft spot for his dronescapes.  There is something about Cousin Silas' longform ambient music that sucks me in and envelops me like a warm Pendleton blanket, comforting me and relaxing me, stilling my busy head and...

The name UNATTRIBUTED is a play on words.  The artist is a long-time advocate of Creative Commons licensing, which fundamentally incorporates the idea of attribution. The idea of numbering the titles of releases and tracks is derived from a series of releases in which artists are allowed to explore any style of music they want, free from the confines of their percieved identity. UNATTRIBUTED is a cross-style project that is currently focusing on ambient, abstract, experimental, drone, and...

I believe in the power of music to inspire and to heal. That's a bit of a cheesy thing to say, I know, but I believe it to be true. When I set out on the weareallghosts journey, it wasn't to make money or to strike it big. No, it was to give something back to the DIY music community that has nourished me over the years ... to bring some happiness into an unhappy world ... to light the proverbial candle to shine out in the darkness. Originally released on the now defunct digitalDIZZY netlabel ... Ornithology is a delightfully dubby collaboration between Cousin Silas and Adrian Nicholls aka The Glove Of Bones. It is an album that is simply too good to languish in obscurity and one I am proud to re-release on weareallghosts. Cousin Silas shows no signs of flagging as we reach his thirty-eighth ... he takes his signature longform drone sound and creates another deep, drifting soundscape with all the added flourishes that we have grown accustomed to: the waves of guitar  juxtaposed with the choral synth, the apparently random notes on the keyboard that always appear at just the right time, the flashes of brilliance that keep you coming back for more; I can't get enough of these soundscapes: I find them both relaxing...

Not everyone can write longform music. It's not just a case of repeating a phrase and stretching it out for over an hour to create your drone; you have to make it interesting, and engaging ... it has to grab the listener's attention and keep it ... and it has to, dare I say, entertaining!  To make that kind of music take time and it takes talent ... and, most of all, it takes patience.  I am so glad Cousin Silas has all three!  weareallghosts are proud to present the thirty-sixth dronescape...

"breaking out afresh or into renewed activity; revival or reappearance in active existence" ... and it is a fitting albeit tongue-tying title for a collection of music by Cousin Silas that he himself has remixed, rearranged and revived.  Recrudescence means to reopen and make raw again as in to reopen a wound. It has been a wee while since we had a dronescape from Cousin Silas, partly because he’s been so busy releasing collaborations and albums on other netlabels. I’ve spoken before about my excitement when I get a dropbox link sent to me … I guess I’m as big a fan as anyone of Dave’s work and still get the feels when I hear a new dronescape from him. Dronescape 033 is an absolute delight: it is the kind of music you want to hear of an lazy Sunday afternoon or a warm bubblebath, music that...

Back in June 2015, Colin Blake released Faith on weareallghosts (waag_rel072) … it was intended to be the first in a three-part series that follows Colin’s original C60 idea - to create 30 minute slices of sci-fi ambient, slices that could easily fit on the side of a C60 cassette tape. Faith was presented as two “sides”: part 1 and part 2, both running near to 30 minutes each and featuring some delightfully mysterious ambient music. Unfortunately, Hope got sidelined … too many other...

"The Time Dwellers" is the fourth album from Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons, an album of considerable beauty, one that further cements their creative partnership. This is music for the imagination, music that will inspire uniquely personal connections in each individual. Silas & Lyons’ pairing particular form of experimental ambient music is tailor-made for listeners who love nothing more than to be fully immersed in otherworldly, expansive aural environments; and it just seems...

It is almost exactly a year to the day that 2 - the second album from Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons - was recorded ... the accumulation of a week of creative experimentation and collaboration between three old friends. Unfortunately I was unable to attend that particular meeting of minds but was delighted with the album when it arrived in my in-box. Underpinned by Jones’ samples and loops, 2 is a sonically adventurous and wonderfully imaginative journey into more abstract,...

The idea of collaboration has negative connotations as does compromise … but something truly beautiful can be born from working together, sharing a vision and journeying on the road of creation with one or two close friends. This is evidenced here, on this the fifth volume of collaborations from Cousin Silas and his friends. Over 5 CDs worth of music … 800+ mb of data if you choose 320kbps MP3 files … Cousin Silas and Friends vol 5 (waag_rel088) is a hefty celebration of truly independent...

“Unstable Lands (waag_rel087)” is the latest release from Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn. It features a deeper, more immersive electronic sound that feeds the imagination … a sound that is less drone-based and more melodic with loops playfully interacting with one another to create dense, otherworldly layers of sound. This is an album to lose yourself in … and to help you do this, each track features wonderful artwork from Smashy that will help guide your thoughts, if you want to, to...

“Micro Dronescapes Vol 1” by Cousin Silas A number of people have taken Cousin Silas’ Dronescapes series to their heart, myself included. I find them utterly fascinating and eagerly await each instalment like a child on Christmas Eve. This month, rather than release another dronescape in all its longform ambient glory, Cousin Silas has decided to put out 6 shorter pieces that all sit comfortably within the 11 to 13 minute range. These pieces are an utter delight: they are long enough to...

Cousin Silas’ thirty-second dronescape is dedicated to the memory of Dame Zaha Hadid, the exceptional British architect who died recently. According to Wikipedia, Hadid liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry that evoke the chaos and flux of modern life. I marvel at Hadid’s creations, especially the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (pictured on the album cover) … she was a true...

Thomas: I was deeply intrigued when Scott first pitched his idea for an Easter-themed album earlier in the year … especially considering the darker subject and proposed sound … I was not disappointed. I am particularly fond of Cousin Silas' longform pieces. Whether it is his dronescapes or the rerelease of Owlers Wood, Cousin Silas knows how to make longform music that is both interesting and engaging rather than monotonous and dull. He has raised the bar, at least for me, and graciously keeps feeding what is developing into an insatiable hunger for more. “Swirl (waag_rel082)” is his latest longform creation, one that explores the vastness of space and time within its 78 minute duration....

Extropy … a noun … the theory that cultural and technological development will expand indefinitely and in an orderly progressive manner throughout the universe, the tendency of systems to grow more organised. I am proud to present a wonderfully atmospheric and very “sci-fi” (as my daughter described it) album from Matthew VandenBrook entitled “Extropy” … more ambient than his previous release, the marvellous “Sound Then Silence (waag_rel064)” release just over one year ago,...

Owlers Wood is one of my favourite longform ambient electronic pieces from Cousin Silas. It was released on the now sadly defunct netlabel Unsheep and has been unfairly languishing in obscurity until now … both Cousin Silas and I have fond memories of the piece and neither of us wanted to see the piece disappear so the decision was taken to re-release it on weareallghosts. It is an amazing piece, almost 80 minutes in length yet totally engaging. It is delicate and thoughtful, reminiscent (to...

“The Stars In The Bright Sky (waag_aa002_1)” is the first of four pieces by Stephen Briggs that are intended for the season of Advent. Advent, for me, is about mystery and there is nothing more mysterious than the stars in the night sky. The four soundscapes that will make up this second “Ambient Advent”...

Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn is a busy guy, he creates music under a number of monikers including Brother Saturn and Chromadrift. I have enjoyed watching his growth as a musician and am proud of the Brother Saturn releases I’ve put out on weareallghosts. “Sunburst” is his latest work as Brother Saturn and it is, by my reckoning, his most accomplished to date. Weird fiction deserves weird music. When I read H.P.Lovecraft, I must do so with weird music in my ears. Over the years, my go-to for the soundtrack has been Emmalee Crane. That is until now. “Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is a deliciously weird collaboration between Cousin Silas, Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; that was conceived during a long weekend together in Yorkshire. Sometimes life just doesn’t go to plan: People you hold in high regard let you down, risks you take don’t pay off and end up costing you dear, and that great idea that you had turns out to be anything but; you know what I mean. "Ancient Ocean (waag_rel071)" is a collaboration between versatile ambient musician Scott Lawlor and neo-Krautrock/kosmische act The Gateless Gate (or one half of it, Allister Thompson). Scott’s drones for this piece strongly suggested the ebb and flow of the ocean. However, making yet another oceanic ambient album wasn’t satisfying, so Allister came up with the concept of a primordial ocean, millions of years before the dawn of man. This opened up the door to all sorts of...
