On December 20, 2014 I filed a freedom of information act (FOIA) request with the FBI asking for all files relating to Activision and Infocom from 1979 through 2000.
On December 31 2014, the FBI sent a response, indicating that they were unable to find any relevant records.
UPDATE: On January 3, 2018 I sent a new FOIA request expanding the initial search from the Central Records System to: FBI Headquarters, and all field offices, main index as well as a all cross references. On October 30 2018, that request yielded a few pages, which I have uploaded as Activision_update.
Here is the text of my request:
This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act.
I am requesting any and all files relating to the company Activision, which is based in California. Date range: 1979 though 2000. In addition, I am requesting any and all files relating to the company Infocom, from its founding 1979 until it was acquired by Activision in 1989. Infocom was based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at archive.org. These companies were major players in the formation of home video game industry, and is of great interest from a historical perspective.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request be filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
