hello there, i'm tulsen tollett and this is sport today, live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: real madrid lose for the sixth time in la liga and drop to fifth place, ten points behind leaders barcelona, who won. there's some fa cup shocks for premier league sides but no problems for manchester city, who smash seven to move into the fourth round. and the chicago bears lose out in their nfc wild card match against the philadelphia eagles, after a late cody parkey kick to win it hits the post and crossbar. hello there and welcome to the programme. loads to get through but we start with football in spain and the news that real madrid slumped to another la liga defeat in front of their own fans — their sixth of the season in only 18 league matches. they were beaten 2—0 by real sociedad at the bernabeu. they fell behind to a penalty from willian jose after just three minutes, and they couldn't get back into it. lucas vazquez was sent off just after the hour mark, and seven minutes from time, ruben pardo added a second

for the visitors. real are now in fifth place, 10 points off leaders barcelona, who were 2—1winners at getafe. lionel messi and luis suarez with the goals. the catalans have extended their lead, after the third placed sevilla drew 1—1 at home to second placed atletico madrid. eibar and villarreal played out a goalless draw but the biggest talking point, as it has been many times this season, is real madrid losing at home. translation: we made a massive mistake in the first minute of the game that cost us a goal, and that punished us. it happened also against villareal. in professional football, it cannot lose your focus. after that, we have tried everything possible to change the result in the first and second half. in spite of the difficulties, in spite of

everything against us, in spite of the penalties and in spite of getting a player sent off, but that is no consolation. so that loss for santiago solari's side means that they're now fifth and outside the champions league qualification spots, while barcelona are five points clear. one player who real madrid hope will strengthen them is brahim diaz, the 19—year—old spanish youngster who's joined the club on a six and half year deal from manchester city. manchester city seem to be doing okay without him though, and they're safely through to the fourth round of the fa cup after beating championship side rotherham united 7—0 at the etihad stadium. it took just 11 minutes for raheem sterling to open the scoring from kevin de bruyne‘s pass. phil foden, gabrieljesus, riyad mahrez, and an own goal had put city 5—0 up, before nicolas otamendi added another. and it was leroy sane who finished the scoring with a deflected effort from range. the fourth round draw takes place later on monday. we took it seriously and now, the

result looks simple or easy but you have to do what you have done, and again, one more time, a compliment for the team, for the way we played, we played well, we communicated with each other, and yeah, we did the job. but there was a big surprise as 2016 premier league champions leicester were knocked out by welsh side newport, who are 7a places below them in the league system. a penalty a few minutes from time gave them a 2—1win. fulham also lost to a lower league side, beaten 2—1 by fourth tier old ham athletic. that's five premier league clubs to go out already, another will go on monday when liverpool go to wolves. in the united arab emirates, day two of the asian cup produced a massive shock. the holders and pre—tournament favourites, australia, were beaten 1—0 byjordan. with action from that and india's victory over thailand, here's anneka radley. australia went into their match

across scotland, northern ireland, into north—west england and north wales. behind it, sunshine for northern ireland in the afternoon, scotland, away from the north and north—west, where it turns wet again and the winds continue to howl. should be a mild day, widely11—12 degrees. but that's not the story. it will be a windy day. windier than we have seen for quite some time. gales across scotland, gusts of 70 mph or more in northern scotland, that could lead to some travel disruption. but the real strength of the winds comes around the back of that deep area of low pressure, it stays very windy during the evening, the first part of the night, and then the low rushes away toward southern scandinavia and takes away the worst of the winds with it as well. but the wind direction changes for tuesday, we get more of a north or north—westerly wind. that means it's going to be a bit colder. but it does mean there's more sunshine on the way. most places on tuesday will be dry with some sunny spells. we will see a few showers coming into north—eastern scotland,

running down these north sea coasts into east anglia, where the winds could be touching gale force for a while. but lighter winds further west. however, temperatures are back into single figures for most areas. so it gets chilly overnight where we have the clearer skies in this central slice of the uk. so a touch of frost early wednesday. more cloud keeps the temperatures up for eastern parts of england. it will feel cold in the wind, there'll be one of two showers on wednesday. out to the west, we've got this gradual encroachment of air from the atlantic. so that means cloudier skies. thickening cloud to bring rain and drizzle into northern ireland, later into western scotland. ahead of it, temperatures 11—5 degrees. probably the coldest day of this week. maybe a frosty start to the midlands, to the south—west of england, some sunshine for a while. you can see how the cloud is just spilling in on that north—westerly breeze. we're bringing in some milder air, yes, and temperatures of 9—10 degrees in scotland and northern ireland. we're back to high pressure again later on in the week and with that sort of position, we're pulling in air from the atlantic. it means a lot of cloud,
1:58 am
but at least temperatures will be a little bit higher as well. but it will be on the breezy side. to sum up the week, a windy start, cold air putting in midweek with more sunshine, then it clouds over later, still a little breezy, but also a bit milder. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. i'm reged ahmad. our top stories: a young saudi woman fleeing to australia is stranded at bangkok airport, where she says her passport has been seized. she tells the bbc she can't go back home. i don't have rights in saudi arabia, and my family treat me so bad. they will kill me. as the government shutdown in the us continues into its third week, president trump says he has little expectation of a breakthrough in the latest talks. the hollywood award season is underway with the glitz and glamour of the golden globes in los angeles.
