>> host: welcome to the tv on c-span2 primetime during the august congressional recess. like to take advantage of this to show you some of the books that we have been covering over the past year or years to one of the things we do is every summer we go up to capitol hill to visit with members of congress to find out what is on their reading list. here is representative joe crowley of new york. booktv recently visited capitol hill to ask members of congress what they are reading this summer. >> well i just finished a book called the moral irishmen about a man named thomas patrick mauer who is in the young movement and escape to america and became general of the civil war and it was the first of may in panama. intriguing book and one i would

recommend. i just started reading born to run by bruce springsteen is one of my all-time favorites musicians and philosophers, someone i have loved for about 40 years now. i am also in the middle of the fredericksburg campaign, the campaign of mary heights crossing the river and fredericksburg virginia, a civil war book and the last book i intend to read this summer is the new jim crow about criminal justice reform here in the united states. but so what your answers in the bruce springsteen story? >> guest: as a bruce springsteen fan since rough in 19781 of my first concerts the concert after thanksgiving eve in 1981 of the most memorable nights of my life and that brings me back to my cousin who was killed on 9/11. can i play guitar together and

played a lot of springsteen strong's but really learning more about his wife in what went into shaping and molding that mind that created these great musical lyrics and music and so i'm looking forward to finishing that. >> host: one of the books he mentioned a shell alexander's "the new jim crow" came out in 2010 and was a big bestseller at the time. recovered her, speaking about it in here she is.
