from phoenix now as senator john mccain's body continues to lie in state in the arizona state capitol building. career, his political senator mccain spent more than a 20 years with the u.s. navy before retiring in 1981 as a captain. his service included calming missions during the vietnam war where he faced injury and captivity when he was shot down over northern vietnam in the fall of 1967. senator mccain is survived by his wife cindy, his seven children, and his 106-year-old mother roberta.
