Exact solutions for the reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained for two general electron density distributions: kinked-trapezoid and exponential-homogeneous-exponential. Normal incidence into a stratified plasma slab is assumed so that the electromagnetic waves are propagating parallel to the free electron density gradients. A constant magnetic field is applied in the propagation direction. The solutions derived on this basis are used to evaluate the effect of the more realistic inhomogeneous plasma model, parametrically. Specific consideration is given to the analysis of transmission from a re-entry cone. The asymptotic expansion of the exact solution for the kinked-trapezoid profile provides a simplified expression for calculation purposes when L/lambda sub zero is larger than one. The analysis of problems in which L/lambda sub zero is much smaller than one is considered in some detail in the final section.
