Recommendations for the sealing of Base wells are divided into three areas. (1) There should be a preliminary site investigation due to limited available geophysical data. Specific data should be obtained at each production well site prior to sealing to determine if the gravel pack of each production well is serving as a conduit for the transfer of contaminants. It is recommended that a preliminary engineering site investigation be performed at certain Base production wells. Investigation should include construction and installation of multiple piezometer wells to monitor upper and lower aquifers. (2) This report describes various alternatives available for installing seals in the gravel envelopes of existing Base production wells. Secondary remedial cementing operations should be performed on selected wells using the Bradenhead squeeze cementing technique. Pumping tests should be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the seal using the piezometer wells previously installed. (3) Base maintenance practices are needed for monitoring the specific capacity of Base productions wells. Calculations of each well's specific capacity should be included in the monthly summary of data to allow for monitoring of well performance. Rehabilitation of selected monitoring wells should be attempted to determine if the wells are inefficient.
