technical failure. It seems like a counter-intuitive move, but you'll see,
that it actually yields tremendous results.."

The band was in awesome form. Every song was spirited, and everybody seemed
to be "on". McCracken - what can you say? The guy is amazing.
Kyle and Mark were absolutely solid,as usual. First time for me seeing Kyle
with a microphone - how cool (and long overdue) is that? Jeb was in The Zone
all night long. The two-song encore was breathtaking - Jeb & Tara were
spellbinding with their intricate, delicate yet powerful duo performance of
"There Must Be". Then everybody let it all hang out for Let Love Move Me.
The entire performance was enhanced by the mighty fine acoustics in the place
(more on that below). But first, a few words on the venue. I didn't take any
pictures of the place, but you can see some on their website including this
The Howard Theater is a gorgeous place; I don't think "posh" is overstating it.
It's an old historic theater, in an historic neighborhood (Shaw, more or less
the capital of African American culture in DC, much of which was burned down
in the '68 riots).
A couple of highlights from the Wikipedia entry:
Constructed in 1910... it had a capacity of more than 1,200. Designed b
J. Edward Storck, the theater featured orchestra and balcony seats and eight
proscenium boxes, with a lavishly decorated interior. No less extravagant
was the exterior, which combined elements of the Beaux-Arts, Italian Renaissance,
and neoclassical styles. The whole was surmounted by a larger than life statue
of Apollo playing his lyre....In 1931, as part of the venue's return to its
original purpose, Duke Ellington appeared with his band at "the Howard,"
helping also to cement the theater's reputation as an entertainment hotspot....
The Howard Theatre lost its original ornate facade in 1941 when it was redone in
the then-fashionable Streamline style. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife
Eleanor would attend balls at the theater during World War II. These balls
featured performers like Danny Kaye,Abbott and Costello and Cesar Romero, among
others. Also in the 1940s, Pearl Bailey made her debut at the Howard Theatre.
The Howard Theatre turned into a house for rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues
during the 1950s and 1960s, when many important acts from both genres played
there. Among the acts to grace the stage were Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington,
Sammy Davis, Jr., James Brown, Lena Horne, Lionel Hampton, The Supremes,
Stevie Wonder, and Dionne Warwick.
The 1968 riots, which followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.,
caused the venue a great deal of harm. The riots, coupled with desegregation,
contributed to the theater's difficulty in attracting patrons, and the theater
closed in 1970. It reopened again a couple years later but closed for good in
1980. Until it was reopened after significant investment and renovations in 2012.
So there you have it: The Herd in all its regalia, seeing how well we clean up!
On the excellent side: The acoustics were awesome. I honestly can't remember a
venue where I could, throughout the show, hear very discreetly what each
musician was doing at every moment. I was literally spellbound by this much of
the time. What if every venue could sound like this!! On the far end into a
deep fall on the dark side: The food was horrible, expensive, and the service
was the worst in my memory. (She literally forgot about us, maybe grey hair
makes us invisible?) Oh, well. We left the show (what a civilized hour!) and
drove to our neighborhood Busboys & Poets where we had a most excellent dessert
and coffee before heading home to collapse. It was Michelle's last market of
the year on Saturday, and we'd been up since 5. All in all, an awesome day.
