Whether through separate courses, or, preferably, through an integration of the curriculum, Afro-American and other minority literature must become a part of English education if the curriculum is to have "integrity" and "relevance" and if the student is to have a satisfactory self-concept. The curriculum must reflect black contributions to the pluralistic nature of our culture, must provide an awareness of alternative life-styles open to man, must foster a healthy self-concept for blacks and a more realistic one for whites, and must help promote a rewarding participation in American life.
