This article examines the relevance of metaphor from a number of perspectives; its dominant part in everyday speech, its use as a teaching tool, and its role in education and training. Metaphor is seen as a vehicle for personal statement, a device for clarifying abstract concepts and for adding color to descriptions, and as a socio-cultural indicator. Examples are given from a variety of contexts; everyday speech, teaching, general education and songs. A distinction is made between cognitive and generative metaphors, the latter being seen as a tool for encouraging and influencing actions such as reform, reflection and ongoing development. The implications of the importance of metaphor range from the difficulties of classroom teaching to major educational decisions. Attention is drawn to the importance of new metaphors in line with the dynamic nature of language.
