this person. but also keeping the possibility open that he may not be as well. out of an abundance of caution, i don't speak for the schools, they make that decision. but i believe just out of an abundance of caution, they've decided to go with that decision, again i said it earlier, it's raining. children wouldn't be outside anyway, so we're continuing to communicate with them and they are with us. >> -- between the person of interest and the person that's still here, do you have any information additionally that indicat indicates. [ inaudible ] can you clear that up for us? >> i can't right now. i'm not able to confirm that right now. >> can you tell us exactly as far as you know, what transpired in this parking lot, and if you know, what transpired outside
the giant in aspen hill? what exactly happened? >> investigators are still looking -- interviewing the witnesses, as well as the two remaining victims who are alive. and i should state that the male is in critical or grave condition, and the female from this location has non-life threatening. two more questions. >> -- parking lot about the carjacking? >> no. >> do you have a lead on the suspect's whereabouts right now? >> that is something that investigators would be doing. [ inaudible question ] >> that's certainly a possibility. the next briefing will be in about an hour. i appreciate your patience and i
appreciate your due diligence in only getting out accurate information to the community. thank you. welcome to "the real story," everybody. i'm gretchen carlson. we're following breaking news that's happening right now in montgomery county in the state of maryland. that was captain paul starks, montgomery county police who was giving what he knows at least right now to reporters, the breaking news that happened in the last couple of minutes is that one of the innocent bystanders, a male who came to the help of another woman who had been shot in a mall parking lot in the westfield montgomery mall parking lot with being that he has now died. other man who came to also help is in grave condition. the woman at the center of that has nonlife threatening conditions right now. let's put it in perspective. there was then a shooting that happened before the mall shooting. this happened at the aspen giant grocery store. that is where a woman died, another person may have been injured. then if you believe that all of these things are connected, yesterday a woman was killed in
her car when she was going to the high school to pick up her children and her estranged husband, eulalio tordil is now the main suspect possibly in all three of these shootings. he remains at large. schools are on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. a very dangerous situation going on in maryland right now. let's bring in rod wheeler who's investigated a lot of these cases during his time. rod, are you there? >> yes, i am, gretchen. >> what do you know about the situation what's going on there now? >> well, what i can tell you is that -- i actually just arrived out here in montgomery county. i see the helicopters are up and the investigators are currently looking for that suspect. now just so you and the viewers understand, yesterday around 4:00 in beltsville, maryland, which is only about 20 minutes from where the mall is today, there was a shoing at a high school, and that's where the federal police officer was identified as being the suspect. his wife was killed. so the police believe he killed his wife. but he got away. so they could not find him and
he's been on the lam ever since yesterday. well, today at around 11:30 this morning, here at the montgomery county mall, there was another shooting. now my sources tell me, gretchen, that the woman that was shot this morning was shot in the arm. now two other guys that was in the parking lot came to her aid, and then that's when whoever this suspect is shot the other two gentlemen. of course you just reported that one died. now only about ten miles away -- i know exactly where all these locations are, gretchen -- ten miles away is the aspen hill shopping center. there is a giant supermarket there, and it's kind of possible that whoever the suspect is could have went from the aspen hill shopping center to montgomery mall. it would be kind of difficult today because of the amount of traffic, but it is possible. police are trying to connect the dots with all of these cases. i honestly believe they are related. >> okay. we just heard the press conference. they said the shootings "may be" related but they are keeping open the possibility, rod, of course that there is yet another shooter that's not related to
the shootings that happened yesterday. let me ask you about the suspect that's happened so far. apparently the hyundai has rented pennsylvania plates. >> right. it was grey in color. that's the vehicle that actually went out on the teletype which is interesting. just this morning, a teletype went out to all the police departments in the area here. i actually saw the teletype. where they said for the police officers in these communities to be on high alert for this particular guy because they had received some information. now the teletype didn't say exactly what information they received, but there is information that this suspect had made statements pertaining to the fact that he wanted to die suicide by cop. that's where that came from, in case anybody was wondering. that's where that came from. it came from information this suspect gave to other people that he knows that he wanted to die as a result of suicide by cop. >> i want to get to that in a
minute. if we are looking at the photo here of the suspect, eulalio tordil is in his 60s. the irony is he was a law enforcement officer with the federal protective service. a couple of months ago in march he was placed on administrative leave. he had his badge taken away. he had his gun taken away, his credentials taken away. why? because his estranged wife had got a protective order against him and that's what happens when you are able to have a firearm with you, it's taken away when a protective order goes into place. obviously this was a situation in which this wife felt like she was in danger, and now she's dead. >> that's right. and you know what? on that protective order, they actually asked him to turn in any and all weapons, including his personal weapons. now he turned in his department-issued weapon, gretchen, but he did not turn in his personal weapons. there is no way the police would know that this guy had other weapons. but this did happen in march. my sources are also telling me -- and this is unconfirmed -- that this officer -- i know some people that knew him -- they say
it's been downhill for him for the past few months and that this guy, from what i hear, him and his wife had a lot of problems. police have been to their home before on a domestic call. so there was a lot of issues going on with this guy. sounds like it's just been all downhill for the past few months with this guy. >> having covered a lot of domestic violence cases and learning a lot about it myself, rod, i think that a lot of people are just going to be really angry about this today, myself included. because it seems to me that, yes, you can give protective orders, yes, you can potentially take away at least his work gun. but what more can we do in society to protect people who are in these situations? had because to me sometimes it feels like nobody cares until the person is dead. >> yeah, you speak for a lot of people when you say that, gretchen. i have to tell you. there is not a lot, though, law enforcement can really do. the laws are there. we try to watch these people as best we can. but i'll tell you, the amount of temporary restraining orders or temporary protection orders that come out of the courts, i mean you're talking thousands in a month. you can't watch each and every
person that has a tpo against them. there is not a whole lot the police can do and i'm not sure how much the courts can do. they can't make people behind bars because they make a threat in a domestic situation. i don't know, but i think a lot of people share that frustration with you. >> if you are just joining us now, this is a live shot of the aspen -- in aspen hill, maryland, where the giant grocery store -- there was a shooting there where a woman was killed earlier today. before that there was a shooting at westfield montgomery mall. a woman was apparently shot in the arm. two men came to her aid, one of them has now died as a result of being shot. other one is in grave condition. but this all goes back potentially to yesterday when the estranged wife of the man you see on the screen was shot and killed in the high school parking lot of her children where she was waiting to pick them up from school. he apparently ambushed her in her car. there was a protective order against him. he had been on administrative leave from his job at federal
protective service, and now he is on the loose. rod, what do we do now? i want to go back to that question where you said that he had threatened in that text that went out to police officers in the area today that he wants to die by suicide by cop. what does that mean and how does that change the way in which law enforcement tried to approach him if they see him? >> well, i can tell you that everyone out here in montgomery county -- i actually just arrived out here. there are tons of police officers everywhere. they are on high alert. they have are the command center above there which is very significant. let me tell you quickly why they brought this particular bus here. they are trying to match the forensics. they have the technology inside the command center to do their forensic testing in the bus. they are trying to match ballistics from the gunshots that went out this morning to the gunshots that happened yesterday at the school in beltsville. but i'll tell you, this guy is on the lam right now. he's somewhere out here in this area where i'm at. i can tell you, people really need to be on guard for a period of time until the police can
find him. unfortunately, i don't think this guy is going to go out peacefully. i think he is either going to wind up killing himself or be killed by a police officer. that's why the schools are on lock dourn a lockdown and the nih is on lockdown status as well. >> we don't know if he knows any of these people who he has shot today, if in fact it is the same gentleman who shot his estranged wife yesterday. don't mean to call him a gentleman that's accused of these crimes. same man that may have shot all of these people. rod, stand by. we'll continue to follow this breaking story that's happening for you today out of maryland. meantime, we'll also try to get in some politics because a lot is going on. president obama addressing reporters at the white house a short time ago in the wake of disappointing new job numbers. that's going to show that the u.s. is hiring at a seven-month low. president once again calling on congress to take action by closing tax loopholes and raising the minimum wage. but he opened the floor to questions, the topic kept
turning to donald trump. . president encouraging the american public to examine the presumptive nominee's record, adding that running for president "is not a reality show." leland vitter reporting live from the white house. leland. >> well, gretchen, we'll run through the economic numbers before we get to all the exciting stuff when it comes to mr. trump. for the president he has come out in the past taking a little bit of a victory lap using numbers to go after congress. 160,000 new jobs. unemployment 5%. 67th consecutive month of positive job growth. that's something we heard about from the president a lot. as you noted though, seventh month low. the bad numbers, workforce participation rate fell to 62.8%. something people are looking at a lot. losses in the energy sector. factories. logging sectors. manufacturing had 4,000 new jobs. the president from the white house briefing room saying really congress has a lot to blame here because they have not
been doing enough about the jobs. then came the issue of election. that's pretty much all reporters wanted to talk about when the president took questions. who would occupy this house, this office, come january 2017, nine months from now. here is president obama on a possible president trump. >> i just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times and this is a really serious job. this is no the entertainment. this is not a reality show. there is no doubt that there is a debate that's taking place inside the republican party about who they are and what they represent. their standard bearer at the moment is donald trump. >> reporter: reporters asked the president to respond to this tweet by trump eating at taco bell on cinco de mayo complete with a quote "i love hispanics" caption. the president punted saying he
doesn't spend much time paying attention to mr. trump's tweets. we could all file that answer away to be used during the next six months effectively, if anybody wanted to ask the president about about mr. trump's tweets. when we come back, we'll have more on the shootings that are unfolding right now in the state of maryland and why police are completely on edge as well as the people in those communities. the shooter still on the large. right back. at ally bank, no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like bill splitting equals nitpicking. but i only had a salad. it was a buffalo chicken salad. salad. ugh! heartburn! no one burns on my watch! try alka-seltzer heartburn reliefchews. they work fast and don't taste chalky.

gave out to west virginia voters last night. told the crowd they no longer have a say in the republican race urging them to stay home even though a number of contested local races remain on the ballot. >> the vote was supposed to be on tuesday. but now i can say, stay home, but get twice as many people in november. right? because we have to win. we have to win the general election. >> joining me now, florida governor rick scott on "the real story." governor, i know that you were also politically inexperienced when you decided to run for governor. you had a business background as well. was donald trump's comments last night just political inexperience telling people not to vote because he's the presumptive nominee already? >> gretchen, i'm not sure the context. but this morning i was at an event highlighting jobs in florida. there was a brand-new u.s. citizen there. i said vote in every election. i mean take every opportunity to vote. get involved in campaigns.
run for office. do everything you can to be part of the political process. i like people to vote. now i like them all to vote republican but i like everybody to get out and vote. >> we should mention that donald trump tweeted out later on everyone should still go vote. maybe he was just trying to get double the voters in the general election coming up in november. what do you make of the in-fighting that's going on within the republican party now? you were also an outsider who was successful in being elected. do you believe that the republican party should come behind and support donald trump? >> gretchen, it is just like my race in 2010. the republican establishment has picked their candidate. it was not me. i came to the race and they tried to -- they tried to talk me out of the race, all sorts of things. but i listened to the voter and we won. it's time to unify. we have our nominee, and look, it is a clear choice. we have a business person, donald trump, whose node had great jobs, who will secure the
border, fight isis, build the military, and on the other hand we have hillary clinton who has never created a job, had her chance to be part of destroying isis, had chance to build the military and doesn't care on secureing the border. this is a clear choice. we cannot stand four more years of barack obama type policies. >> i want to change gears now because something very important that's going on in your state and frankly all across the country, increasing number of zika virus cases turning up all across the united states. if you look at your map there on the screen, cases reported in every state except idaho, wyoming, dakotas, wyoming, wisconsin and alaska. 472 cases in the u.s. so far, 661 reported in u.s. territories. i know, governor scott, you say that the zika virus should be handled like a hurricane situation. what do you mean by that? >> what we do in florida is we prepare. we've got to think what would we do if we were thinking about a hurricane. we'd say we'll get prepared so we stop the loss of life and we
stop the loss of property to the extent we can. so i'll be going to d ing to d. week telling the federal government, get together, do what we're doing in florida. i'm sure other states are doing the same thing. take this seriously. hurricane season starts july 1st. it is going to start raining in the south, it is going to get hot. we've had all these people going to brazil for the olympics, they're going to come back to florida or through florida. let's get ready. we're talking to the cdc but our federal government needs to be a good partner. >> governor scott, you would know how to handle that being in florida and having dealt with storms just like that. keep us apprised are of what's going on there. we appreciate your time. more on shootings now in maryland that are happening right now. it is still unsolved. new information on the killing as well of a texas fitness instructor. we're hearing now about the creepy text messages she got before she went to church that morning to teach a class. more on that when we return. i'm terrible at golf.

welcome back to "the real story" today. new developments in the murder of a texas woman. missy bevers, fitness instructor, found dead inside a church in a ft. worth suburb before her 5:00 a.m. aerobics class. possible suspect seen here on this surveillance video. now there is a new lead. bevers receiving a message on linkedin that may be tied to her killing. it was creepy. casey, what have police been able to learn from her social media account? >> well, according to this new affidavit that's been released, less than three days before her murder, the victim received a message from a man she did not know on linkedin. that is a social media platform that connects people around the
world. missy bevers reportedly showed that message to a friend and they both described it as "creepy" and strange, but we do not know what it said. furthermore, that affidavit shows bevers had engaged in communication with another man described as "flirtatious and intimate in nature" by police. authorities say evidence pulled from mobile phones also reveal ongoing financial and marital struggles between she and her husband, brandon. brandon bevers seen her has been cooperative with police from the beginning and we should point out has not been named a suspect. now, police in midlothian, texas where this murder happened are also checking cell phone tower transmissions to see if the killer used their mobile phone which would have pinged a tower. investigators say the suspect was inside that church for about 30 minutes on the morning of april 18th pacing around in police tactical gear, almost as if waiting for bevers to arrive
to teach her fitness class. her body was discovered later that morning when folks started showing up for class. she had multiple puncture wounds on her head and chest. at this point dekt ifls say they are looking at several of interest which includes multiple individuals whose phone numbers showed up in the victim's mobile device. some of which had been deleted from the phone but was ultimately recovered by police. so they're going at a lot of different angles here now. >> very interesting. thank you. we have three shooting scenes right now. in maryland, three shooting scenes, we have people dead including the estranged wife of what police believe now -- who police believe tosh the succe b suspect. that gunman is still on the loose. >> this continues to be a very active investigation. we're still looking at the possibility that these shootings
here and the shooting in aspen hill are related. >> police working to figure out if they are connected and if the shooter knew the people that he was coming after at least in today's shootings. we will bring you up to speed with a live report from the scene next. your insurance company won't replace the full value of your totaled new car. the guy says, "you picked the wrong insurance plan." no, i picked the wrong insurance company. with new car replacement, we'll replace the full value of your car plus depreciation. liberty mutual insurance. trust number one doctor recommended dulcolax constipated? use dulcolax tablets for gentle overnight relief suppositories for relief in minutes and stool softeners for comfortable relief of hard stools. dulcolax, designed for dependable relief ♪ mehi kiara, i'm sarah,ut

outside of washington, d.c. earlier today. police say three people were shot at the bethesda shopping mall, one has now died. then eight miles away at a giant grocery store, a woman was shot and killed. we do not yet know if the shootings are related to one another but this comes just one day after police say this man on your screen shot and killed his estranged wife and wounded another man outside of a high school in the nearby town of beltsville. it's also unclear right now if it is connected at all to today's shooting. garrett tenney live on the scene from bethesda, maryland for us. what's the latest, what do you know? >> reporter: well, a lot is still very unclear here. what we do know is over the last 24 hours, six people have been shot, three are now dead. it is not clear if these shootings are related are, but police say they are looking into that possibility. this morning around 11:00 a.m. we know a woman was outside this mall in the parking lot when a man had a confrontation with
her, we are told. two other men, good samaritans, came in to try to help that woman. when sheot. and then both of them were shot. one of those men has died. the other is in critical, but grave condition. then about 30 minutes later, about eight miles away, outside a giant supermarket in the parking lot there, another woman was shot. we are told that she is also in critical condition now. again, police do not know if these incidents are related. but they are looking into that possibility that they could be related to a third shooting incident that happened yesterday afternoon outside a high school. again, about 20 minutes away. that incident involved a former -- or rather a current federal protective services officer who was placed on administrative duties -- or placed on leave from administrative duties when a protective order was issued against him earlier this year from his wife. his weapon was removed, and yesterday that former federal officer who we are told is
eulalio tordil, 62 years old, confronted his wife in that parking lot, shot her, as well as another man who tried to help her out. she died and police are now searching for him. it is unclear if these three incidents are related. but police are looking into that possibility. >> garrett tenney live for us on the scene, thank you. former new york city police sergeant, director at defendantuniversity.com, steve cardy, this accused murderer, eulalio tordil, he apparently threatened police officers this morning in some shape or form telling them that he wants to go out suicide by cop. what does that mean? >> well, it means he's got nothing to lose, he's very desperate. in cases like this, his gun's taken away, he's put on modified
duty, in his life his mind is over. he apparently snapped. typically when a judge issues an order of protection they require all weapons to be turned in. but that doesn't mean he didn't have access to others. and you have to think that the people that he's targeting, the likelihood in any event that the people he's targeting were possibly in some way, shape or form part of her support network, if you will. >> yeah. it is unclear whether or not he knows these other people, if in fact these shootings are related from yesterday to today, if he's actually targeting these people. i'm going to ask rod wheeler that in a moment because he is live on the scene and he has his sources working there. let's put up on the screen right now what police are looking for. they issued an alert for tordil who they say may be driving a silver 2015 hyundai, pennsylvania plates jza0123. easy enough license plate to remember when we are looking for somebody. based on the fact that it is a rental car, obviously this guy was trying not to be depicted by
police. it appears he was able to not be detected for at least the last 24 hours from when the initial shooting happened yesterday. >> it is a lot of areas to search for unless they are up on his phone and know what happepee he is. law enforcement has a lot of tools, license plate readers. you happen to drive by a police officer, that plate is flagged. it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. because unless they have a frequently known location or direction which i'm sure they are already checking, it is going to be hard to find him if he doesn't want to be detected. remember, he's in the system and knows how law enforcement works to some degree. >> that's a great point to bring up fact that he was a law enforcement officer until he was put on administrative leave back in march with federal protective service. let me ask you this. if he wants to go out in some sort of gunfire or eventually take his own life, are we to expect that we're going to have possibly another shooting scene here? >> what law enforcement's going to want to do if they do locate
him is keep their distance, contain him, bring in a highly trained negotiator to try and talk him down. if he runs out of the building, shots ablaze, they'll have no choice but to terminate him. >> all right. i was just hoping that he's not going to somehow go to another public place and start firing just to get the attention of the police, and then have them kill him which is apparently what he wants at this point. steve cardian, thanks for your expertise. rod wheeler is getting set up live on the scene to give us more information from maryland. meantime, back to politics. donald trump earning a key endorsement ahead of next week's west virginia primary and a cool hat to go with it. >> on behalf of the best coal miners in the world who mine the cleanest and safest and most environmentally sound coal in the world, we're so pleased to introduce to and endorse you to, wish you the best of luck and
vow to support you the best we can. >> chris hamilton is the senior vice president of the west virginia coal association. also craig brannam, an out-of-work coal miner. craig, very, very sorry for your situation. i've also experienced being out of work and it is a painful, painful time. so our thoughts are with you. let me ask, first, chris, what was it like to be up on stage giving the hardhat to donald trump and why did you make the decision so early on to endorse him as part of the association? well, now we have lost them just before they could answer any questions. so we are going to hopefully go back to our coal miners in just a moment. meantime though let's continue to follow the situation that's unfolding in maryland now with the shooting there and the suspect still on the loose. we will bring you more up to date on that right when we return. you focus on making great burgers, or building the best houses in town.

news desk. much more ahead on the shootings in maryland and the search for this man, u lalial tordil. we'll bring you the news conference and speak with reporters at the scenes of today's shootings ahead on breaking news on shepard smith reporting. back on "the real story" now. we got them back! chris hamilton, senior vice president of the west virginia coal social right there giving away a hardhat to donald trump when the association endorsed him last night in west virginia. we're also going to be joined by craig brannam, an out-of-work coal miner. literally, we couldn't write this any better or worse, the power went out in your studio. i'm assuming because there are not enough coal jobs. right? >> that's exactly right. >> yeah, we asked them to switch
back on to coal fired electricity from the renewable source. >> all right. >> probably a windmill stopped blowing. >> so chris, you were the guy on stage last night giving a hardhat to donald trump. why did the association decide this early on to endorse him? >> well, we wanted to have plenty of time to mobilize our resources through the summer months and into the fall. there is such a dramatic contrast between donald trump and hillary clinton and what they represent and what we believe their core program will have in store for energy industries and coal mining particularly. >> she got herself into difficulty a couple of months ago and she tried to clean it up over the last few days. she basically tried to say she was going to make sure that coal miners didn't have jobs. that's pretty much what she said. what was your reaction to that? >> well, i asked bill sunday. i got to talk to him for just a second.
he was trying to explain to me that she was misspoken. they changed that for an ad. but i've heard it several times. you know, obama, she going to carry on his legacy. that is his legacy, stop coal. why? we're working. that's all we want to do is work. we don't want your handout. if you want to bring jobs, bring it. we'll work it but we want coal. we want our coal now. you can't just turn it off. >> well, it's interesting because you talked about president obama. i want to show some facts and figures. 2009 there were 1,407 coal mines in the united states. by 2014 that number had dropped to 985. 422 fewer than when president obama took office. chris, do you believe that donald trump would bring some of those jobs back? >> oh, i absolutely do. you're absolutely correct in your numbers. we've lost over half of the mining jobs we had in west virginia here when president obama took office. that equates to about 50,000 direct and indirect west
virginians that were working eight years ago that have been furloughed or are laid off here today. >> all right. chris hamilton, your organization supporting donald trump. craig broannam who's been laid off, i hope you can find another job and hopefully relatively soon. craig and chris, thank you. >> i do, too. fox news alert. rod wheeler is live for us now on the scene in maryland where these shootings have been unfolding. yesterday there was one and now we've had two more today. rod, are you there? >> yes, i am. gretchen, i can tell you as the rain continues to fall here at the mall where i am located, the police have just announced that they are looking specifically for that individual from yesterday. although that is not the only thing that they are looking for him. they are looking at all the
possibilities in terms of what could have happened. it was about 24 hours now when that other shooting took place yesterday afternoon in beltsville. that individual is a person of interest. i knew earlier this morning actually when paul starks of the montgomery county police department was speaking, i kind of knew at that time who he was talking about even though he didn't mention it. but he is a person of interest and several police departments are now involved looking for that individual, as well as anyone else that may be related to him. >> the reason you knew that eulalio tordil, the man we are seeing on the screen there, that he may be the person of interest because this text went out to police officials and departments throughout the area in montgomery county and other parts of maryland because he had threatened to somebody in some way that he wanted to be taken out suicide by cop. well, now that we had these other shootings that happened today and other people have been killed, including an innocent bystander, a man trying to help a woman at the mall. let me ask you, have you heard
from anyone there that there is any indication that if it is tordil, that he's been going through some sort of a list of people that he's been targeting these certain individuals to take them out, or that it's just random? >> well, that's an excellent question. i have not heard that, that he had a list of individuals that he wanted to take out. now that's interesting though, gretchen, real quickly. i can tell you why from a homicide investigator's perspective. this individual for some reason or another has had a lot of problems. as we talked about earlier, over the past several months. he was having domestic problems with his wife as home. he was even having problems on the job, according to some of my contacts at the federal protective service. but they didn't know what was going on with him. so they're looking -- police investigators now are trying to see whether or not this guy had any relationship whatsoever with the woman that was shot this morning. now she did survive. she was shot in the arm kay towarding to my sources. as you just reported, one of the other individuals died. they are trying to see if there
is a connection with any and all of these people. >> all right, rod wheeler live on the scene for us, thank you. we'll come back to you as warranted, rod. back to politics now, major developments on the campaign front. what house speaker paul ryan is now planning with donald trump. going to happen next week. and what it could mean for trying to unite the deeply divided gop. you wouldn't take medicine without checking the side effects. hey honey. huh. the good news is my hypertension is gone. so why would you invest without checking brokercheck? check your broker with brokercheck. this is lloyd. to prove to you that the better choice for him is aleve. he's agreed to give it up.
