i-team uncovered. many of you had strong reactions to ducks and geese becomming snarled in fishing hooks at sunset park. now -- a couple of weeks after our graphic story aired -- the county parks and recreation department is doing something about it. denise valdez has our story: < (( injured ducks)) ((denise valdez)) struggling with an image problem -- of injured wildlife -- dirty grounds and constant use -- today a new stewardship program was rolled out for sunset park. (( nats power point )) ((denise valdez)) it will be manned by the very same people -- who fish -- walk and picnic there. volunteers wearing a badge and vest will soon document and report what they see. ((crystalaura jackson: its an opportuniy for citizens to get involved in caring for the park and also provide education for the benefits of the park . )) ((denise valdez)) lately those beneifts have been blemished. so beyond more eyes and ears -- signs will be installed warning

hooks -- gear and other dangerous objects for wildlife. (( crystalaura jackson: with all that use you know the park could use a little tlc sometimes .. use some poeple to take ownership of park and take care of it. )) ((denise valdez)) now the search is on to find those stewards -- who can volnteer atleast four hours a month to keep sunset park cleaner -- greener -- and safer. denise valdez. 8 news now. > ((dave courvoisier)) volunteers will get a background check and training. the county hopes to find those people soon and start the stewardship of sunset park in the next sixty days./// ((paula francis)) > a speedy recovery for a brave k9 officer... attacked with a machete in the line of duty. today metro invited cameras in for the first time... to get a close- up look of little nicky. sergeant eric kerns showed his k9 partner off this afternoon... saying the 8- year- old dog has a lot of energy and is of course getting a lot of love. nicky was hurt during a barricade situation that started
6:04 pm
it lasted about twelve hours. nicky was sent in to take down the suspect... and was successful... but not before he suffered injuries to his face, head, and paw: ((sgt. eric kerns/metro police: he's a tough dog. he's a tough dog, so fortunately, he didn't get anything vital. his eyes are still good. his ears are still good. no vital organs were struck, so we're very fortunate.)) ((paula francis)) tolavius timmons was arrested in that barricade. he faces multiple charges inlcuding a felony for injuring a police animal and animal cruelty./// ((dave courvoisier)) > another day closer to the nevada democratic caucus... and another poll showing a dead-heat between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. the campaigns have been kicking it into overdrive in the final days before the "first in the west" caucus. political reporter patrick walker has more. ((patrick walker: "new numbers affirm what we've been suspecting for awhile now. it's a close race... and last week's poll results

walker)) ahead of saturday's caucus... bernie sanders' las vegas campaign offices are seeing a surge of people looking to volunteer. ((emilia pablo/sanders' nevada communications director: "for many of them, we notice that it's their first time getting involved (in politics), and bernie sanders has become their reason to caucus.")) ((patrick walker)) the last two nevada polls have been virtual ties... and sanders' campaign trying to chip away at clinton's voting base. that includes issuing a list of 100 influential women who support bernie... including las vegas assemblywoman heidi swank... who says she isn't bound to vote for hillary clinton, just because she's a woman. ((assm. heidi swank/(d) las vegas: "i think once you kind of take a breath and step back, folks see that being able to support the candidate of your choice is what feminism was, and still is fighting for.")) (( clinton campaign volunteers)) the clinton camp has no doubt taken notice of the momentum swing. she was once considered a runaway favorite... but now her campaign is doubling down in the final days before the caucus.
6:06 pm
field organizer: "we have to make sure everyone is turning out, we have a lot of supporters, and we just want to make sure they know where their caucus location is.")) ((patrick walker)) whichever way it goes on saturday... senator harry reid says he sees the tight race as a win for the democratic party. ((sen. harry reid/(d) nevada: "i think it's going to be great, we had over 100,000 8 years ago, and i don't know what we'll do this time, but it's going to be good.")) ((patrick walker: "republicans will soon turn up the heat in nevada as well. several candidates are announcing events this weekend... after they wrap things up in south carolina saturday night. in the newsroom, patrick walker, 8 news now.")) ((dave courvoisier)) > 8 news now is your local election headquarters leading up to this weekend's caucuses.. and through the general election in november. you can find all the latest polling numbers and headlines on air and online... at las vegas now dot com./// ((paula francis)) > breaking the law... without even knowing it! the scam one local got caught up in... and the popular websites criminals are using to lure people in. one of the areas that i've been particularly interested in is the area of children. we intend to be sure that everybody in this room and every child in this state is somebody. no matter where they're born, no matter to whom they are born. i want to make sure that every child has a chance to live up to his or her god-given potential. i've spent my life fighting for children, and i'm not stopping now. i'm hillary clinton,

always easy. ((dave courvoisier)) as 8 on your side consumer advocate michelle mortensen tells us ... some of the most attractive jobs ... may not be legit.... but scams. ((michelle mortensen)) they might be scams that could con you into doing illegal activity ... though you never know it. this "job" i'm about to tell you about ... is definitely one to avoid. ((kasondra: i was putting my resume out ( anywhere i could.)) ((kasondra: mostly work from home.)) kasondra lubbers desperately needed a job. so when this email offer came in ... ((kassondra: it sounded perfect )) all she had to do was ship packages to score more than 18 hundred bucks a month. ((kasondra: it would cover my mortgage which was what i was hoping for)) the company .. lite west .. sent her a contract and asked
6:11 pm
bank acount, routing number and other personal information. within days .. boxes like these showed up on her doorstep.... and all she had to do was mail them around the world. ((kasondra: they were actually going to moscow )) she did it for weeks ... but never got paid... and started to think the worst. ((kasondra: which is why i contacted you guys.)) turns out kasondra may have been wrapped up in an international reshipping scam. that's where people get you to mail stolen goods for them... and possibly steal your identity to steal more stuff. to know for sure we got the post office invovled. ((they prey on people who don't know any better )) inspector andrea avery collected all the packages at kasondra's home ... and then launched an investigation into this possible scam. the first step - opening the packages and returning any potentially stolen items to the stores or businesses they came from. she couldn't tell e what was inside each box.... because the investigation is ongoing ... but she did say the next step is tracking the people behind it down.... and warning others to avoid
6:12 pm
+ ((andrea: our biggest defense right now is just educating the public about these kinds of crimes. )) ((michelle mortensen)) in addition to helping kasondra with notifying authorities about what happened to her ... we also hooked her up with the folks at the finacial guidance center. they're helping her with her finances, budgeting and her credit while she looks for a job. and remember .. when looking for jobs ... if it sounds too good to be true -- it probably is. and research companies before you hand over your personal information. traffic is backed up after a billboard truck overturned. this is a look at the truck right in front of the flamingo. the northbound lanes of las vegas boulevard are closed at the flamingo intersection. the driver was taken to u-m-c with non- life threatening injuries./// ((dave courvoisier)) > a terrible crime committed twenty years ago on valentines day is close to being solved, but metro detectives need help from the public to put a pair of killers away. ((paula francis)) the victims were a young woman and her unborn child, gunned down while at a convenience store. george knapp of the i-team is here with a preview of his story. ((george knapp)) this case received national attention back when it happened february 14th 1996 but has since faded from public memory. we're calling it the drag queen killers. now it has been revived by a pair of cold case detectives who are zeroing in on the suspects. the incident was captured on multiple cameras. two black males dressed in women's clothing marched into a convenience store at pecos and bonanza, pointed guns and

a young woman, six months pregnant, was sitting in the store to spend valentines day with the clerk, her husband- to- be. one of the robbers paused on the way out. ((dean o'kelley/metro cold case detective: 11003800 he's walking out, just almost as an afterthought, he turns and fires one round into sarah. tha bullet struck her in the shoulder and then went across her body and in thru her unborn son. george knapp: so its two murders? o'kelley: yes it is. )) ((george knapp)) sara keyenejad died at the scene. doctors later determined her unborn child would have been viable but it was pierced by the bullet. the cold case detectives who are working this case say they're pretty sure they know the identity of the killers, and that this was the culmination of a bloody spree that took other lives. ((george knapp)) > tonight at 11, we will show you the video and still photos and from the crime scene in hopes that this 20 year old tragedy can finally be solved, with the public's help./// news music voice over:

sports with chris maathuis. > ((chris maathuis)) four months ago, ufc's ronda rousey was the queen of all sports. the most popular athlete to burst onto the scene in a long time. but then she lost for the first time in her career... and that november loss apparently did much more then anyone could've imagined. ronda;"thinking about killing myself, killing myself, killing myself." ((chris maathuis)) that's ronda rousey saying the suicide. fight would trigger such hopeless thoughts? ronda; "i'm nothing what do i do anymore." ((chris maathuis)) fighters train relentlessly, then lay it on the line... so who knows' whats in her mind...
6:25 pm
most of us can't relate. but suicide is something to be taken seriously. rick egan/suicide prevention; "it's the 10th leading cause of death across the nation... it's the leading cause of death for 15-34 year olds in the state of nevada." ((chris maathuis)) rousey was able to gather herself.... and maybe her revealing interview can help others dealing with thoughts of suicide. ronda; "to be honest i looked up and saw my man travis was there and looking at him and i was like i need to have his babies i need to stay alive." ((chris maathuis)) if her interview helps even one person... ronda's revelation was worth it. kevin iole/writer;" i think what she did was an heroic act in a lot of ways, look if it could happen to me a strong accomplished person who has all these great atrributes and people look up too. and i need help its ok for you to seek help and i think at the end of the day she was trying to do." ((chris maathuis)) nearly 43 thousand american's committed sucide in 2014.. those are the latest numbers, and those are deaths officially ruled a suicide. rick; "573 of those came from nevada." ((chris maathuis)) fighters or boxers are one on
6:26 pm
it's a brutal, combat sport... unlike any other. that's why you hear fighters sometimes say they'd rather die in the ring then lose. kevin; i wrote in the review journal a number of years ago that diego corrales said that and he's one of tte many fighers i've heard say that over the years he's the only one who really ever meant it." ((chris maathuis)) fighters and boxers get hit or kicked in the head. so who's to know if a fighter is thinking straight immediatly following a loss or knockout. clearly for rousey disappointment and depression was her biggest fight of that night. ronda;" being defeated is a choice everybody has losses in their life but i choose to be undefeated." ((chris maathuis)) the runnin' rebels have only a small handful of games left in the regular season. they've only got 4 more before the mountain west tourney tips off here in las vegas. so it's time to fish or cut bait for this team.... it's certainly been a crazy season. seems to almost mirror the last few seasons... high expecations only to see disappointment at the end. who knows if unlv can win a game in the tourney...
6:27 pm
they might be hard pressed to win any of thier last four games left. but they do have a big one coming up saturday at home with reno. manny pacquiao's comments toward gays have cost him his contract with nike. the company says it has dropped the filipino boxer after he was quoted as saying gay people "are worse than animals." nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has long stood up for the rights of gays. pacquiao, who meets timothy bradley on april 9 in what could be his last fight, apologized tuesday for the remarks made a day earlier. pacquiao said it was just common sense that animals are not gay. pacquiao is running for the senate in the philippines. ((dave courvoisier)) > more changes are on the way for the las vegas strip... as the development of "wynn plaza" was officially announced today. wynn las vegas is adding more than 75- thousand square feet of luxury retail space outside the casino. steve wynn himself released a statement today... saying since the resort was built...
