"early today" starts right now good monday morning. i'm frances rivera >> and i'm phillip mena. hurricane dorian, a catastrophic category 5 storm, is pummelling the bahamas with unprecedented strength as it slowly churns toward florida at least 1 million people in the carolinas and georgia have been offered to evacuate this

morning. dorian is the first category storm to hit in the last two years. we're already seeing parts of the aftermath, parts of the bahamas completely devastated. threatening 185 mile per hour winds, it hetty the abaco island they say it ties the 1935 labor day hurricane as the strongest in the atlantic. and hurricane hunters capturing jaw-dropping video of lightning seen from inside the plane as they flew right inside the eye of the storm some forecasters warn dorian could change the geography of the islands forever. >> let's turn to meteorologist bonnie schneider tracking dorian for us this morning. good morning, bonnie >> good morning. this has slowed down unfortunately for the bahamas. three land falls already and it's barely moving as dorian, this category 5 monster storm, just works its way slowly due west across grand bahama, that's one of the places that it made landfall. let's take a look at the current situation right now. winds, 175 miles per hour.

that's only slightly weaker than where it was before. and that's because dorian underwent or is undergoing an eye wall replacement cycle we may see that intensity pick up again here's the latest on the track still keeping it a category # 4. eventually making the turn to the north away from florida but perilously close to the coast line that holds true for the carolinas as well. even though dorian is forecast to be a category 2 by thursday, it's possible it could make landfall in north carolina or south carolina so something to watch because we are still dealing with a lot of uncertainty with this storm. dorian historical category 5 storm pounding the bahamas right now. >> bonnie, thank you for monitoring that for us appreciate it. >> florida residents are expected to feel the effects of dorian later today as it dances off the east coast it could be the fourth category 5 hurricane to hit the united states in the last two years holiday travel disruptions are at an all-time high. over 600 flights were canceled

i knew it existed and i've seen some category 4s, you don't even see them that much but the category 5 is something. >> reporter: yet during his administration, three hurricanes impacting the u.s. were category 5s at one point. irma, maria and michael. for dorian, preparations are stretching up to georgia and the carolinas. nbc's kathy park is in charleston >> reporter: flooding has been a problem this past week with one of the highest tide levels for the year dorian can only increase the risk of extreme flooding >> reporter: back in florida, businesses banking on labor day weekend rushed to board up and as dorian intensifies. >> it's something we're really counting on this time of year. but, yeah, came at a bad time, this storm >> reporter: here in stuart, florida, many businesses have already boarded up just to our north, more mandatory evacuations are expected on this labor day frances? >> all right, gabe gutierrez, thank you. >> west texas community reeling this morning after a shooting

spree left sev dead. hundreds attended a vigil for the victims last night the first of several planned in the week ahead on saturday, police say the gunman led officers on a harrowing chase through two cities, opening fire on bystanders along the way during the terrifying ten-mile chase, 29 people wersh seemingly at random. it started with a routine traffic stop in midland. the gunman immediately opened fire with an assault-style rifle as the officer approached the vehicle. the 36-year-old was eventually killed in a shootout investigators have offered no motive, but two law enforcement sources tell nbc news he was recently fired from his job. meanwhile we are learning more about those who lost their lives in the shooting and those who barely escaped nbc's joe fryer has their stories. joe? >> reporter: phillip, many of those who were injured in this shooting are still recovering, most of them at the hospital behind me here in odessa while other families are remembering those who lost their lives.

as bullets flew aimlessly acro across texas roadways, rudolfo was driving his semi truck home from work. >> now he's gone, so, you know >> reporter: the wife says her husband of 20 years, the father of her three kids was struck and killed >> i don't want another little girl without a dad like my girl. >> reporter: arco was one of seven people killed along with mail carrier mary granados who was preparing to celebrate her 30th birthday with identical twin rosie >> she was special and i don't know what i'm going to do without her, you know, because i'm not going to see her any more >> reporter: among the injured, a 17 month old child, anderson davis. she was hit in the chest and face by bullet shrapnel but is expected to make a full recovery her family says, we hurt so badly for the families whose loved ones didn't survive this tragedy. we are thank for our beautiful baby girl and look forward to reuniting her at home with her twin brother soon, one of many close calls.

you can see the aftermath from tmz. they were driving the extremely winding mullholland drive in los angeles when they veered off the road over an embankment and rolled down a hill this photo from tmz shows just how crushed the car was. hart and the driver, 28-year-old jared black, were rushed to hospitals. the california high of way patrol reports both suffered, quote, major back injuries hart is one of the biggest comedians in the country, the highest-paid stand-up comedian of the past two years. >> you do the same thing every day, yep, yep, yep, whatever you need >> reporter: and the star of block buster "ride along." >> i was in a situation, jay >> reporter: and night school. the car they were driving was a 1970 plymouth barracuda seen here in a video posted earlier in the day according to tmz, it was a gift he gave himself for his 40th birthday in july according to highway patrol, the driver was not under the influence.
