we're zooming in to san mateo now. northbound 101 slows. you'll have to exit dore avenue if you want to get into the area by the golf course. i've seen pete suratos and our live camera at the scene. what's the latest and what happens over there? >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. we're here off airport boulevard. that car collided. we did get the update from police and they're saying this deadly traffic collision may be connected to a home invasion in the area. that is under investigation. they are confirming this happened just before 4:00 a.m. in area off airport boulevard and not too long

before the crash they were investigating a home invasion in the san mateo area. now they're trying to figure out if this crash is connected to all of it. one person has died as a result of this traffic collision. there were two other people in the vehicle injured. it's a very active investigation. san mateo police on the scene and an ambulance unit. one person has died as a result of the crash. san mateo police will be handling it moving forward. pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:02 now. a look at your weather forecast. some rain but not immediately, right, kari? we'll see the rain for the weekend. right now a few clouds rolling by.

special reports throughout the day. and continuing coverage now of the coronavirus. concerns are growing around the world and that new viral illness is out of china. it continues to spread. here are the latest numbers we have. 17 people are dead. more than 500 are sick this is after the coronavirus started emerging out of wuhan, china. thailand is confirming four cases while the united states, taiwan, south korea and japan each reporting one started emerging out of the city of. traveling from china, china is now banning travel for three cities. in just hours the world health organization will decide whether to declare a global health emergency which would set up the international kating. the incubation time around five

skeng measures including for sfo. and a state senate committee to compensate for lost wages and food spoiled by power outages. now this comes as governor newsom lays out his reason for rejecting the blueprint. the governor sent the bankruptcy judge a letter saying the plan false short. pg&e just made an agreement with bondholders providing it gets the green light. a live look now at some of our busiest roadways in the bay new this morning california is ranked as one of the top states when it comes to road safety.

california got a green rating in part for its seat belt law. the top are rhode island, washington, d.c., and washington state. the worst states, hopefully you're not going on a road trip through south dakota, wyoming or missouri. and to a follow-up now san jose's evergreen school district is moving forward with a plan to close two schools at the end of the school year, laurel wood and dovehill elementary schools. the superintendent made a recommendation despite heavy opposition from parents, teachers and students. the district is struggling with lower enrollment and faces a $12 million deficit. board members will vote on those closures next month. a bright spot in our housing crisis news. if you're a millennial and looking to buy a bay area home, maybe look towards hayward, a new report lists that east bay

city as number ten. the median price of a home there, $638,000. compare that to the rest of alameda county. in oakland therice there $717,000. we're waking up with a lot of clouds across the bay area. a live look outside in san francisco and so that's keeping it a little bit milder. as we've seen only some weak storm systems. we've measured over 15 inches of rain but that only puts us at 79% of normal and in san francisco about three quarters of the way there. in oakland we're only at about half. in livermore 33% of normal even

after measuring over 2 1/2 inches of rain and san jose has measured about three-quarter inches. we're still at half of where we should be. that police investigation continues. we're showing you the deadly crash scene and investigation. this is near airport boulevard. we see thisnvtigation with the crime tape. folks familiar with the area traveling north from 92, you'll exit at dore avenue. travel along the freeway on surface streets. obey with caution around that crash scene. you see just mild slowing there through san mateo but the early slowing there could have more problems off the bridge.

to catch them with that. it was really crazy. the temperatures were so cold they were immobile. people were posting pictures of them on the ground and this lady even put a blanket over it and a hat saying i hope it will wake up soon. >> it's cold-blooded. >> when it wakes up, what the? what? >> why am i wearing a hat? that was very interesting. and it's been about nine years since they've had temperatures that cold. it was something to see. >> they're resilie >> kind of like a toddler. especially in the north bay they might start to fall out of the tree.

we are looking at more clouds moving in. a lot of the rain further to the north. we have rain chances possible to our north. that will keep it cloudy. that rain works its way across the rest of the bay area. still unsettled weather here and showers developing. we're looking at some rain passing on through. then as we go into the ano hour things clearing out. we do have to have that heads-up between saturday night and sunday morning. higher for santa rosa up to ukiah. there will be some rain changing over to snow. as we go into the weekend a lot of our areas looking good and

warm. this next storm system starts out as rain. we are going to see the rain with temperatures in the low 60s. there may still be lingering showers but overall a mild forecast heading our way. mike, you still have that closure along the peninsula. >> we do. feway up here in san mateo. the main commute is just starting to kick in. a typical pattern. the early slowing because of an early overnight crash that happened here, the exit is closed. folks see the chp flares and that will slow you down from just north of 92. dore avenue over to the north bay shore boulevard is your alternate.

6:25. and it is tax time. a lot of people eager to get those refunds asap. >> scammers know that, too. some people are getting a refund even earlier than they expect which could be a con job. >> reporter: good morning. an east bay man asked us about getting this refund check from the irs ire in the mail. quite the mystery because he hadn't filed yet. that set off alarm bells. the irs warned us that the bad guys are cooking up a growing fraud. they are hacking into tax premer and accountant computers stealing your personal information, then filing bogus returns in your name. you get an actual refund check but a few weeks later the cracks

in the east bay. the search for a suspect who robbed a woman at gunpoint and the shocking video that has a community calling for change. thanks for joining us on this thursday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now to mike inouye with some breaking news about a deadly crash in san mateo. that's the saddest news i have to report in the traffic center when someone has died as a result of a crash. there's more going on. the commute easing in typical including across the san mateo bridge. west 92 feeds into foster city. we had early slowing. added distraction. the pennsylvania avenue off ramp is closed from 101. hold on to that thought. looking at your alternate which is dore avenue. get you up to the airport which is right alongside the freeway. if you're coming from the southbound side you might want to loop back to get back into the area because both directions

of the bay shore boulevard are affected by this investigation that continues. pete suratos has been out there. there's police activity. i hear this is possibly related to an earlier home invasion? >> reporter: that's right, mike. that's the information from san mateo police. the deadly crash is connected to suspects that were involved in the home invasion not too far from here, about south of where we're standing on peninsula avenue off the 101. as you can see active investigation in this deadly crash off the off ramp on peninsula avenue. police say the car is one of two involved in the home invasion. one person has died and two others sent to the hospital for injuries. it is an active investigation by san mateo police, they hope to

provide another update laider on today, guys. >> thank you very much, pete. we want to track your forecast with meteorologist kari hall. we have some clouds overhead keeping us from seeing any dense fog this morning. our high temperatures inland reaching to the low 60s. dry weather into the start of the weekend but then some showers. checking out san francisco we're in the upper 50s today. we'll see our temperatures reaching into the upper 50s as that rain arrives on sunday. i'll talk about what's going on in the bay area coming up in about seven minutes. this door cam video of an armed robbery no doubt hard to watch. with the sound full it may be more disturbing. bob redell is li people in

the neighborhood hoping for? >> reporter: they want oakland police to do more patrols, we're talking about the canyon observation complex, located in the oakland foothills. it was posted to ring's social media site and captures an armed robbery. it is graphic. it might be disturbing to watch this is from 12:30 a.m. monday morning. in it you see a man attack a woman as she's about to enter a condo unit. he knocks her to the ground, points at her with what looks like a semiautomatic handgun and eventually steals her purse.r, friend of one of her neighbors or some such, turned to walk into her unit. he kind of came at her from behind, grabbed her purse and

pulled a gun. if his intention was to get inside, i hope her screaming sent him away. >> reporter: the resident who was attacked suffered minor injuries. we did reach out to her, she does not want to talk about the attack. the complex has pictures of the suspect posted at the entrance to their campus and residents have organized a meeting and officers with the oakland police department. san jose police hearing from willow glenn residents. thieves hit at least ten cars and this video. it shows someone breaking into a bakery.

the owner told us it wasn't the first time this has happened. chief garcia will be at the willow glen community center and police do say that property crime citywide is down nearly 40%. violent crime has increased slightly. we're still wait to go learn the name and identity of the three american firefighters who died in the crash of the tanker plane on the front lines of the australian wildfires. the plane was packed with retardant as i the state's top fire commissioner there in australia deaths have been incredibly hard for everyone. >> if i may, the firefighting fraternity as we keep saying is a tight knit family, a fairly

santa rosa. it's not ready yet. once completed it is expected to provide 60 beds. a live look now at the bay bridge. considering backing the idea of a bus only lane. the idea was first floated by east bay assembly rob bonta. at the same time the idea has actually been tried once before. it was over just a few months in the early 1960s. we won't blame you if you don'to vote to fund new canopies like this one on your screen. the one that is above the civic center stations feature security cameras and post train arrival times. if the plan goes forward new canopies would go up over all downtown entrances. back to mike inouye who has been tracking that breaking news

causing the backups. you mentioned bart. b.a.r.t. has no delays. it's ace train originating but held up because of something hit on the tracks. they're still an hour late. can't really make up that time. this backup starts to clear. things are lighter out of oakland if you take the left lane approaches. a mild build for walnut creek. the slowing continues to build, though. pete suratos is on scene and san mateo police are saying this is possibly related to an earlier home invasion. you see the car that crashed. two were taken to the hospital and the investigation continues.

mitch mcconnell will give the democrats 24 hours over the course of three days to deliver their case. that's yesterday, today and tomorr we've seen hours and hours of opening arguments so far, though the issue is actually simple. there's impeachment manager jason crow summing up the case in exactlyde ahone call. he spoke with ukrainian president zelensky and asked for a favor. and on that same day just hours after his call his administration was quietly placing an illegal hold on critical military aid to support our friends. >> that is the whole case right there. the white house does not deny trump asked for the favor. it's in the transcript. the president does not deny he withheld military aid deliberately. curiously the president's lawyer alan dershowitz saysues abuse

of power is not impeachable. reports say democrats have backed away from an idea where they would trade witnesses, allow joe biden to testify in exchange for john bolton. that idea is dead. many argue it was flawed from the beginning. though an impeachment is not the same as a criminal trial, you can't just call anybody for a criminal trial. bolton was there during the commission of the alleged crime. biden wasn't. democrats would no doubt love to put stormy daniels on the stand or subpoena trump's tax records but they're not relevant to the case. president trump has returned from switzerland, is back in the white house. he tweeted or re-tweeted times yesterday and ten times this morning. earlier he said he was tempted to head over to the capito l to see his own trial. >> what do you think, will you show up at your trial anyway day? >> why not?

64 in gilroy. a high of 61 in concord, fremont reaching 62 degrees. cy 59 degr. the north bay reaches 61 in napa today. look what's happening up around rain.nd. we'll see all of this pushing through as we get the last little surgeem, that cold front moving through late on saturday. in the meantime we have a steady stream of rain for the north bay and so at any point today, tomorrow, even on saturday we could see some rain from santa rosa on northward. we'll start to see the rain coming through more widespread heading into saturday night as well as sunday morning. it doesn't look like it rains all weekend n. fact, there may be some clearing by sunday afternoon.

north of the golden gate bridge. only a tenth to a quarter inch of rain. the light rain comes down sunday early in the morning. we're looking at about 2 to 6 inches of snow. a look at our seven-day forecast. some low 60s headed our way. no changes temperature wise. a lot of clouds. some peeks of sunshine and off and on rain early sunday. that building commute and mor >> a couple key spots. the cash lanes had been completely cleared. they are filling in once again with more traffic showing up on our map coming through contra costa county. there is that build pushing over here to the maze which does move

well but getting more populated, more slowing. we have this, also. the only other issue here for the rest of the day, exit dore avenue instead of peninsula avenue because of that crash that continues there. the crash scene, the deadly crash and investigation possibly linked to an overnight home invasion or attempt at a home invasion that happened in the area, so we continue to follow that with pete suratos. there is slowing that slows up and we'll take you to the waze system. the green route goes past that but the best route is taking the purple one on 280 and avoiding the entire slowdown for that stretch saving you about five or six minutes. if you have to avenue you have to exit at dore avenue. back to you. >> thank you, ke yourcoreould m harder to get a loan. scoring consumers more harshly for increasing debt or falling behind on payments. it also plans to flag certain
