(steve) from our partners at c-n-n reporter alison kosik is live in new york and has the latest on the ongoing investigation. james p. o'neil/ nypd commissioner: "today, there was a loss of life in lower manhattan. the dead and injured were just going about their days.""after a truck mowed over people in a new york city bike path, killing at least eight, and injuring
wounded the suspect in the abdomen after he wrecked his truck. witnesses say the suspect was yelling, "god is great" in arabic. (steve) tonight we are learning new details on the suspect... again his name is sayfullo saipov... and he is from uzbekistan...a country in central asia ... saipov came to the u-s back in 20-10. police say he has a tampa, florida address connected to him. investigators are also examining a possible connection to new jersey.... again, police say he left a note at the scene claiming he carried ot the attack in the name of isis... witnesses
say saipov was yelling, "allahu akbar" meaning, "god is great" in arabic. (pam) the white house says, the president has been briefed by chief of staff john kelly. he also sent out this tweet in response to the terror attack in new york city. the president tweeted quote - "we must not allow isis to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the middle east and elsewhere. enough!" (pam) california senator dianne feinstein also took to twitter after the attack.she tweeted - "i'm following the attack in new york closely. my thanks to the brave first responders on the scene. heartbreaking." (steve) today's attack in new york .... follows a chilling trend -- the use of 'vehicles' as deadly weapons by terror groups ... a pair of attacks in spain... over the course of two days in august. first in barcelona ===where one attacker mowed down dozens of people == killing 13. and injuring more than 100 people. two suspects are arrested...but the driver got away. then about eight hours later and seventy miles
south of barcelona.. terrorists drive a car through another group of pedestrians in cambrils (cam-breel). police shot dead five of the perpetrators. then in june of this year... a van drove through a crowd of people on the london bridge. the van crashed and three men got out and went on a stabbing spree. eight people were killed and 48 injured - including four police officers. and in april this year a man drove a truck into a crowd in a busy street in stockholm, sweden. five people were killed in that attack. 15 others were injured. and the deadliest attack happened in nice, france.... 84 people were killed in july 2016 -when a man used a rental truck to plow down hundreds of people who were celebrating bastille day. the driver... was killed in a shootout with police. ... .... officer ended up shooting him, and he later died in the hospital. (pam) a grocery store clerk trying to stop an alleged shoplifter .... is stabbed and attacked by a dog early this morning. it happened at the safeway in san francisco's richmond district, at 7th avenue and cabrillo, not far from golden gate park. tonight... that safeway worker is in the hospital with life- threatening injuries. police identified the suspect as 34- year-old michael pardo. officers say, the 39-year- old safeway worker tried to stop pardo from shoplifting .. and a physical confrontation ensued. officers say, pardo's dog bit the worker on the legs... while pardo stabbed him in the back. those who shop at this safeway... are unnerved by what happened.(sot)
other store employees came to the victim's aid... and pardo was held down and later arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and robbery. (pam) tonight-- nearly a dozen agencies in sonoma county are working to reduce the risk of flooding and water pollution.. after the wildfires. there are 617 streams which are filtered for drinking water in the areas affected by the fires. officials say ... it is important that ash, debris, and other contaminants do not get in that water. and as rain approaches the bay area ... there is an effort to prevent flooding. right now.. crews are cleaning storm drains, and placing sandbags to keep debris out. (steve) and kron four is teaming up once again with the salvation army to help out victims of the deadly fires. we did right after hurricane harvey... and we are doing it again this friday to raise money for the north bay fire victims. the donation lines will be open during the kron four morning news from 6 a-m until 10 a-m. they

(steve) since wet weather is heading our way.. now is the time to prepare in san francisco, the public utilities commission is spreading the word ... about its new flood resilience strategy... it is called "rain ready s-f". s-f-p-u-c officials are currently cleaning out storm drains throughout the city.. providing sandbags... setting up barriers ... and making capital investments up to $700 million dollars... in hopes of stopping flooding in areas which get hit alot.. like 17th street near folsom. for an armed man ..... accused of stealing medication from a walgreens in walnut creek. it happened yesterday on the 29-hundred block of north main street. police say, an armed man jumped over the pharmacy counter and threatened employees with a gun. they say, he stole opiate- based medications, and ran off toward treat boulevard. no employees or customers were harmed during the robbery. the robber has not been found. police have not released any description or surveillance video. (steve) still ahead... a high-tech fork claims it can mask slurping noises you make while eating ramen... but is it really worth over 100- dollars... we'll explain.... (pam) as we get closer to the holiday season ... more tech toys are coming out... and this 130-dollar -fork .... will mask any slurping sounds you make while eating. a japanese company, known for making ramen noodles, came up with the idea. the fork's handle has a microphone that detects noisy, slurpy
eating. it then sends a signal to your smartphone, which plays a louder sound to drown out the slurping. the company says, they will only mass- produce the fork if they get five- thousand or more ... pre-orders by mid- december. (steve) a new "switch" for nintendo could mean record profits for 2017. and its thanks to strong sales of the popular switch console. nintendo just upped its earnings forecast for the fiscal year, nearly doubling expected profits from its previous estimate issued just a few months ago. when the switch first launched, high demand and supply shortages handicapped sales -- but those problems seem to be easing. nintendo now saying it expects to sell millions more switch consoles in the coming months. super mario game odyssey continues to be the popular game.... (steve) now at 9:30... terror strikes in the heart of new york city tonight. after a truck driver plows down a bike path.. running over cyclists and pedestrians... (steve)killing eight people and injuring about a dozen others...(pam) this is what we know at this hour.... the suspect is 29-year-old sayfullo saipov ... he was shot by police officers... and is out of surgery... he is expected to survive. we are told he came to the united states from
uzbekistan in 2010. new york city police say, he had a fake gun in each hand at the time he got out of the truck. saipov has a florida license but investigators say, he may have been staying in new jersey. witnesses reported hearing the suspect shout "allahu akbar" which is arabic and translates as "god is great." as of right now we know of the people killed five of them were argentines... and one belgian... the five argentines were among a group of friends who traveled to new york from rosario. police say they were celebrating the 30th anniversary of graduating from college.... away...at kron 4 dot com. é(steve) back here in san francisco.... witnesses say a dump truck slammed into several cars in san francisco. you can see the aftermath. we're told the truck, which was unmanned, slid down the hill on broadway and divisadero. the truck mostly slammed into parked cars...but three cars were actually driving when they were hit. a total of 12 vehicles were damaged. we're told at least three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. s-f-p-d confirms the driver of the truck will be cited. (pam) in san jose, paramedics responded to a call that was first reported ... as a man with a facial injury. the call came in early this morning from a pay phone at a light rail station on west capitol avenue, near highway 87. however...tonig ht...deputies say that victim was seriously injured... after being shot in the face. wearing protective masks and gloves...sheriff's deputies grabebd a bike... and other items as evidence...found on
the street level of the capitol avenue light rail station. deputies say the male victim was apparently riding that bicycle in the area ..when he was shot. there were no reports of gunfire. however... there are several surveillance cameras around the capitol avenue light rail station... authorites are currently reviewing that video...for a clue that might lead them to a possible suspect. (steve) bart says people riding trains without paying is costing the agency millions of dollars, but now it is spending money to crack down on fare evaders. kron 4s dan kerman is at san francisco's embarcadero bart station with details.... riding bart without paying has become very costly to the transit agencysot alicia trost/bart spokesperson 05-14 we think its 25 million dollars worth of a problem, which means a lot less money to keep stations clean and to make investments to improve your experience.but now bart has decided to spend 2 and a half million dollars to stop fare evaders.sotone thing is
addressing the stations, making it harder to fare evade, next is a new policy that lets us check for a ticket once you are in the paid area, and last more enforcement.bart will hire 6 community service officers in january. station improvements are already underway. at san francisco's embarcadero station, swinging gates have been closed shut and new gates have been installed with a word of warning that those who exit when it's not an emergency are fare evading and will be caught on camera. at other stations glass barriers between the free area and the paid area will rise to 60 inches.sotall for it if its for the betterment of everyone sotit's not fair if others try to trick the system all the time.many bart riders support the crackdown on fare evaders and bart says ultimately it should improve overall safety. sotwhen you address fare evasion you are also addressing crime, when you put more officers out in the system to check system that's also increases police presense, so it prevents crime, it makes our riders feel more safe, seeing an officer out monitoring the
situation.standup dan kerman 127-135the fines can be costly, 75 dollars for adults and 55 dollars for minors. in sf dan kerman kron 4 news. std/139 (steve) in the east bay... police arrested a man... after they received reports that he was firing a gun out of a truck. around 11:30- saturday night... a driver reported seeing the passenger of a truck with a handgun... firing shots. a witness told police, the truck was near interstate- 680 and highway- 24. the c-h-p caught up with the truck a short time later, on highway- four. they followed it off the highway and into a shopping center parking lot. that is where the passenger got out of the truck... and took off. officers were able to catch him and arrest him. when authorities searched the truck... they found the handgun described by the witness. they also found ammunition, a large amount of marijuana and 2,000 dollars in cash. officers search for any violationsbut on this night they're looking for something a bit different.sot: onyanga dean, asst. unit parole supervisor san francisco// "anything that involves trick or treat activities, halloween decorations, so basically we do not want them handing out candy or participating in halloween whatsoever."on this holiday operation boo specifically targets sex offenders who have committed a crime against a child. supervisor dean estimates about 75 of them live in san francisco and says they're all paid a visit to make sure they're complying with this special condition.in this case officers found several electronics and checked them for pornographic images.they ended up taking away a laptop that wouldn't turn on.sot: eddy yee, parol agent san francisco// "it's a concern for us because we don't know what he could have on that computer whether it be pictures or a website that he visited. since we didn't have immediate access to it we decided to confiscate it for further investigation." officers then examine gps ankle bracelets to make sure they are working as part of the parole condition.that monitoring device also plays a part on halloween because sex offenders to be at home so they don't come into contact with kids on the streets and
