(robin)(boxes)we are getting an upclose look at the training chp officers go through. and the new challenges they face in the field. terisa estacio has the details. natural sound: "get to it" there was no messing around at the california highway patrol academy - my media training day started off quickly with a dose of rigourous pt training of jumping jacks, situps and something called nose in the rings - a push up down to fingers close together, then it was off to running then an obstacle course - where as you can see, i almost made it across before falling and getting yelled out for failing. "pick a car" (sound of chp instructor)here at the first of many drills - instructors staged an accident where a driver was under the influence - and it was our job as cadets for the day to map out a strategy dealing with the situation as if it was real. "you got it?" "yes."

(sound of chp instructor)at one point, i put on googles that simulated a dui by distorting my vision. the googles were equivlanent to being a .08 - legally drunk. then they had me perform a sobriety test, which as you can see here, i clearly failed. on january 1st, all officers will face an increased tast as recreational marijunana becomes legal in calfornia - a challenge chp brass say they are gearing up to deal with. glen glaser, chp instructor "mamm, hello" managing mental health calls is also an increasing issue - officials say they are seeing more complex calls out in the field this scenario where a woman was suicidal is just one of a thousand cadets get training on - "how can i help?" "whoa"this by far, was my favorite part of the day - driving - especially as the rains are about to hit the bay area, the instructor took me through a series of steps as i spun out showing me how to safely correct my vehicle. sot: i am not missing eating brendon correia is a chp officer in contra costa county - he helped me navigate my training day. brendon correia, chp what is the benefit of us coming here, to see and share what it is like, and what goes into preparing us.
