florida coast. news 3 meteorologist kelly curran has been tracking the storm for the last couple days. we are your weather authority forecast and have the minute to minute tracking system on this storm coming your way. >> krystal: staying fit and staying health aarey -- healthy. how you and your family can take part in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keep your kids on the right path. that coming up. >> michelle: it's thrifty thursday. so if you want high price tag, we have you covered. goodwill's upscale boutique called de ja blue, they are here and they've got really, really great stuff you might just like coming up >> announcer: news 3 starts right now. >> michelle: good afternoon. thank you for joining us. the strenthening hurricane matthew now a category 4 storm
coast as we speak. >> krystal: this is really massive. the florida governor there rick scott didn't mince words. he said this will kill you. time is running out. >> michelle: this storm will kill you were his act words. >> krystal: he says you can't take chances with this. you have 2 million residents being told to evacuate. our kelly curran has been doing a terrific job monitoring this storm. you have been tracking this for the last couple days. we've been trying to see what path it will take. any time you have a category 4 storm, that's pretty big. >> kelly: i i mean, it's going to be devastating in a lot of scenarios here unless it hangs as far right as it can. here is a look at what we're seeing with it right now. there you see the center of the eye. it's approaching fremont bahamas. we're going to zoom in closer on the storm to get a better look on where it is. you can't really see because it's underneath the radar but that's the bahamas. the fremont island. it's heading that way. we're seeing some of those outer
fort pierce, west palm beach, wind, rain, thunderstorm, isolated tornados always a possibility when dealing with this as well. it's not just there, even the northern portion of the state starting to see bands coming on. they're moving west around daytona beach, jacksonville starting to see a little bit as well. i think if it takes the center path, daytona beach could be one of the areas that's hardest hit. let's look at that forecast track for this storm and see what we're expecting here. again, a 140-mile-an-hour winds. hurricane-force winds extending out 60 miles from the center of the storm. it's making its way northwestward, getting close to the florida shoreline. there you see around daytona beach. this time wise is about friday afternoon, friday evening. then it continues to track its way northward. getting to around jacksonville, friday night at 8:00 p.m. then off the coast of georgia and south carolina. that's friday night into saturday.
so could potentially, granted this is still a long way out and hurricanes have a tendency to change their minds. it could potentially hit florida again as a tropical storm. more likely a tropical depression. that is something we're going to continue to watch. insult to injury kind of case. here a lot nicer. we'll talk about that coming up. >> krystal: thank you for giving us perspective on where this thing is moving and live images out of the bahamas. as we told you earlier, thi lives. it just really devastated haiti. they're calling it another humanitarian crisis. the storm making its way toward florida as kelly just showed you there. and, again, this is something that they're really not messing around with. president obama has already declared a state of emergency for florida. holly has more. >> evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. be prepared. don't take a chance. >> reporter: more than 2 million people from florida to
hurricane matthew. the most since hurricane sandy in 2012. officials this morning warning residents along the east coast matthew is going to be a deadly storm. >> time is running out. this is clearly going to either have a direct hit or come along the coast and we're going to have hurricane-force winds f. there are no excuses. you need to leave. >> reporter: expected to be a category 4 when it makes landfall. >> it's going to be going up the coast and could remain a major hurricane at the coast or very close to . that's awful. >> reporter: hurricane matthew is expected to bring up more than 100 miles per hour winds. a five to nine foot storm surge, inland flooding and power outages. >> if you are on the east coast you will lose power. you are going to lose power. do not believe you are not going to lose power. you are going to lose power. millions will lose power. possibly for a long period of time. >> reporter: matthew hit the island nation of haiti as a category 4 on tuesday.

>> kelly: it is 12:42. we are taking live looks outside in florida where you are starting to see the waves coming up the shoreline there. they are expecting storm surge possibly up to nine feet depending on the tidal cycle. on top of that they've got the swells, the waves, and rip currents too. we definitely don't want to see anybody out in that water that's for sure. not for the next couple days. here is a look at what we're seeing at home. things are much, much quieter. we've got a lot of blue sky temperatures, pretty comfortable as well. this is the o'callaghan middle school camera. beautiful conditions for us. temperatures as you are stepping out the door right now pahrump at 75. boulder city just 74. mesquite, 78. in the las vegas valley mid and youer 70s downtown 77. spring valley, summerlin 74. many neighborhoods will struggle to reach 80 degrees today. isn't that amazing? here is a look at the satellite radar. we just don't have a whole lot
there is quite a bit of activity to our north. snow in parts of colorado as well. here at home, tons of sunshine. it's going to stay that way tomorrow as well. the next system will start working in on sunday. could see rain on monday. where they are seeing the rain, the heavy rainfall, the winds, the storm surge, that's florida. that's hurricane matthew. category 4 hurricane. 140 miles per hour winds. gonna be crossing over free port, bahamas within the next couple hours. we will see the eye go start working further northwestward. let's zoom in and you can see bands of showers and storms just pounding florida's coastline. west palm beach, fort lauderdale, miami. as far as rainfall totals? four to eight inches with isolated amounts up to 12 inches of rain. add the storm surge on top of it. we're going continue to track it. not just here on news 3 but our social media accounts.
