and i'm monica jackson.. welcome to fox5 news this morning. tonight's the night - the first presidential debate of campaign 2016. republican donald trump and democrat hillary clinton are neck- and-neck in the polls.. and tonight, they will face off at 9 p-m eastern at tonight, they will face off at 9 p-m eastern at hofstra university in hempstead, new york. dianne gallagher is there and looking ahead to the big event..

shortly monday's 90-minute debate will be divided into six 15- minute segments that will cover three topics - "america's direction," "achieving prosperity" and "securing america." moderator lester holt will begin each segment with a question and the candidates will have to minutes each to respond. they'll also get a chance to respond to each other. both candidates spent sunday drilling. clinton spent part of last week prepping for the debate while trump stuck to the campaign trail, getting tips from advisors/, including former new york mayor, rudy giuliani. (rudy giuliani/fmr new york city mayor) "my advice i have for him since he's been my friend for 28 years is to be himself the campaign manager for "hillary for america" says he fears that trump's

the debate tonight there will not be a fox5 news at 6.. instead -- we will bring you fox5 news at 7-30 right after the debate wraps up. we're following breaking news out of houston this morning.. police have shot and killed a gunman .. after this gunman shot and injured at least 6 people. police say the man - identified only as a lawyer at a nearby law firm - shot the six people early this morning.. when it was still dark. three other people were injured .. but it's not clear if they were shot. one of the people shot is listed in critical condition. police did search the man's car and did find other weapons inside.. the fbi and atf are now on the scene assisting in the investigation.
