are negotiating with them when they get back from the august recess. that fundraising letter is the most devastating so far. obama-care is a broad term to the recipients of that letter means any form of health care reform. so that's as bad a thing as we heard from grassley so far. >> the notion, meantime, floated by people from mr. hatch and republicans playing on a perpetual loop from fox on right wing radio that senator kennedy would have compromised, particularly regarding the public option. you worked with senator kennedy on the health care reform bill process as somebody who's in there and now i presumably heard the senator's letter to the pope right after the senator's death during his burial? how do you respond to the notion from mr. hatch? >> i do not presume to speak for the senate. he's no longer with us. i think john kerry, chris dodd can do that. they had conversations with him specifically about where he stands -- stood on it this year. we do have a history.

there's a history of no compromise with ted kennedy on health care reform and the central principles of it. he refused to compromise with president nixon when he offered a very, railroad strong employer-mandate bill which was basically the shape of the clinton bill 20 years later. ted kennedy came to regret that. he told him by 2004 that he did regret not doing business with richard nixon. but after that, he became unyielding, also, when president clinton wanted him to be unyielding, which was in 1994. you'll remember, president clinton held up a veto pen and said i'll veto anything that does not have universal coverage and the mechanism for that was the employer mandate. it was the tough get that legislative go-round. that's what we couldn't get passed. ted kennedy did get the employer mandate passed in his committee including orrin hatch. he did not compromise any of the central principles of the bill to get orrin hatch's vote.

this time around, chris dodd was in close communication about what to do. chris dodd passed the bill out of the committee with zero republican votes, orrin hatch voting against it. john mccain voting against it. ted kennedy called him the next morning the first thing and did not say why didn't you get orrin hatch? he called to congratulate him for the way he passed the bill and what was in it? >> you said how much negotiating the democrats do after the break is over. the republican radio address, senator inzy part of the purportedly bipartisan talks said the democrats and the health care prosoposals would me our nation sicker without saving money, raid medicare, and reduce the relationship between the doctor and the patient. those remarks are illuminating. are his response illuminating. do they get it in the white house? >> i think they should be counting envy out.

how can you imagine the republican from wyoming to be onboard surprised me. he, too, was on the kennedy committee. he voted against the kennedy bill. he did not engage in negotiations with chris dodd on that bill. he has been involved in the finance committee on negotiations which have been more -- looser, more open, but i -- i never saw a route to getting his vote on what the president wants, which is this public option and other elements. and i don't see it now. and so the white house, the problem for the white house is this is very bad news when they get to the end of the august recess and they realized there are no republican vote ifs they's what they're realizing. because they did not have a strategy to do this without republican votes. >> political analyst and huffing ton post, as always, sir, thanks. >> thanks. >> duval patrick said mrs. kennedy does not want that appointment if it happens to succeed her husband. who, then, and what now?

an icon in terms of the way she cares for the constituents are michael myers, spearheaded the health care policy team. there is a great group of staffers who really believed in what the senator believe in may also be considered. >> will there be a blowback if it's teddy kennedy jr., joe kennedy, be involved in either of those who didn't want the name, carried the weight, even if it was less than five months and there was a guarantee that we found out that the interim senator would not be run in january. >> yeah, of course. it hasn't been written about it. so much is at stake with the health care legislation that they wouldn't let ted kennedy's memory stand in the way.

if bobby kennedy or jack kennedy wanted to complete the term, there might be blow back. >> who would do it? who would do it well? who would do it? >> well, i'm told that senior staffers, like the ones mentioned, or little phil, who you may remember spoke at the memorial. the former staffer and the lawyer in massachusetts, or kerry parker, the legislative director, with senator kennedy's staff for 40 years that all of them are also being considered if the law is changed. we don't know yet. >> as to the special election in january, is there a chance that the seat might not remain friendly in democratic hands? the state did elect a republican governor previous to this one. >> actually, keith, i really believes it depends on three
