The 3 Mesquiteers Clean Up The Range
Another good - that is 3 star - Three Mesquiteers movie, here staring Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan and ventriloquist Max Terhune. Typical plot, sheep men versus cattlemen with a few of the usual twists thrown in. Eleanor Stewart makes an attractive woman in the middle of the conflict. Harry Woods, Yakima Canutt, John Merton, Frank Ellis and crooked sheriff Earle Hodgins are all fine as the bad guys. Terhune gets to shine here using his ventriloquy in a few novel and amusing situations. And, we get a big blowout gunfight at the end. IMDb says it is a 56 minute film, but we get the edited 52:51 version here.
The print that you use is somewhat dark. Republic had a habit of using movie posters to decorate the walls of their sets, giving a plug to their other westerns. The classic battle scene at the end showed how Republic's action flowed intermidst camera shots of different scenes. The "gag" of having the big city gangster being blown off his horse by dynamite was done by Yakima Canutt. He re-enacted the stunt in a special live show for Republic's distributors in which the blast was so powerful it took out the windows of the adjoining sets.
