Ska Beat was a show I did in the latter part of the 90s as a community volunteer for 88.1 WMUL, Marshall Universityâs radio station, in Huntington, WV. Itâs a snapshot of the music I was listening to and where my head was at in that time period. The show ran for almost three years, mostly in the Sunday noon to 2PM timeslot before shifting to a Thursday evening 8-10PM shift. It was a great time to see live music as many ska bands came through the Huntington area on their way to somewhere else. Sometimes I recorded my shows in the hopes of improving and I think I definitely did as time went by. Unfortunately Iâve lost my playlists from so long ago and my memory isnât what it used to be so there may be a few unknown artist and songs.
Be forewarned, I have chosen to include all of the Public Service Announcements, weather updates, mistakes and whatever else was recorded along with the music. Yeah, I am that lazy. Also, these shows were taped on cassettes and as such may suffer from sitting around for all of these years. Additionally, WMUL had an ongoing issue of a loud hum that would periodically present itself when I was talking but normally it went away when the music was playing. Often I forgot to hit record or to turn the tape over at the midpoint of the show so there will be gaps in songs as well as some being omitted entirely. I have tried to annotate when that happened and if the songs didnât make it on the tape I leave them off of the playlist.
Feel free to leave a comment if my memory has failed or I completely messed thing up.

Other Ska Beat tapes
Thanks for commenting, it was a great time for me, I got to see a ton of great bands and often got to hang out with them as well. I didn't know how good I had it. Still love listening to the music and finding new stuff as well. I do a podcast called Ten For Tuesday where I play all kinds of music but ska gets played frequently. As a matter of fact there are two all ska/rocksteady/reggae epsiodes coming soon. Almost all of the shows are also here on archive.org.
I may have a few more tapes but I'll have to go digging and see. All of them got put away last year because my "office" is now in use as a bedroom. I'm pretty sure I had started working on identifying the bands and songs on what was left but the notebook was put away too. There are two shows on here where I was filling in at other times and played ska, punk, rock and so forth. Just search for WMUL and you can find them. I'll try and get something up soon. Don

These ska shows are awesome. I was at UConn in the mid-to-late 90s and this was a big part of my musical experience. Your shows definitely capture that time for me. Any chance you have others you haven't uploaded?
