roxboro, 69 degrees. delaware river trail at fifth and wharton. warm steamy start. doesn't look like much now, showers in western pennsylvania. that's the line of storms to watch for to develop later today. heading out the door right now, clouds overhead. some breaks of sunshine and a quick warmup. 78 degrees at 10:00. by 1:00 84 degrees. later in the afternoon, that's when we'll see those storms. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in 10. right now let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> monitoring a work zone on 95 around state road. very active scene right here but ongoing. something we should be used to. starting to see some volume on either side on the northbound side or the southbound lanes here heading into the center city area. still only about a 13-minute trip from woodhaven road up towards the vine street expressway. and out in bristol still dealing with one lane getting by. slow going on the pa turnpike on the westbound side from delaware
valley and bensalem due to an overturned tractor-trailer. in new jersey still watching a sinkhole in berlin on the white horse pike ramp closing that towards haddon avenue. in new jersey in vineland we're dealing with an accident investigation on elm road and south mill road. take 55 or orchard road to get by. tracy. 5:31. we continue to follow this breaking news. police are on scene investigating an attempted home invasion. the crime happened in the same block where recent sexual assaults happened. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is live in south philadelphia with an update. what have you learned, matt? >> reporter: tracy, a few minutes ago detectives arrived on the scene to continue the investigation. get out of the way. you can see just down the street where the 100 block of rose wood street. right there is where the investigation has been underway for the better part of an hour at this point. we have some video from a little bit earlier when there was more activity from police at the scene. police tell us a man trying to
open the door but was not able to get in. someone called 911 and officers responded before he could get in the home. no one was hurt but neighbors have been concerned over two sex assaults in this area. one happened just on sunday morning right here on the 1800 block of rosewood the same block. another case on the 1700 block of chadwick a few blocks away. that was back in march when a woman was sexually assaulted in her home. in those two cases the suspect reportedly wore red gloves. we have seen several police cars leave this area. again, no one injured here. the canine unit was out here earlier. we did see police setting up a perimeter about an hour ago. since then we've been told that they do have one person being questioned right now. not here at the scene, somewhere else nearby. special victims is out here. going to continue this investigation as well trying to see if there's any link between
these cases. now that is the latest here live in south philadelphia. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." matt, more from you in a moment. this breaking news from overseas. overnight authorities in switzerland arrested six fifa officials on corruption charges in a raid. fifa's the organization that runs soccer's world cup. "nbc 10's" vai sikahema is live. vai, we were expecting a news conference from fifa. you have new information. >> reporter: breaking new information on this every 20 or 30 minutes or so. here's the latest. u.s. attorney in new york unsealed an indictment charging 14 people in the sting, two of the people that are charged are current -- include current vice presidents of fifa. now the investigation is looking into bribes taken over the last 20 years or so. fifa is holding a news conference, as you said right now. we're waiting to learn more information about the charges as well. there's been a lot of speculation about corruption
especially considering qatar's selection to host the world cup in 2022. they got the nod despite the fact that the climate is scorching, lack of history with soccer. it has close ties with fifa president, seth bladder. he is expected to win re-election. fifa says that election will go on. you may be wondering why american law enforcement is involved in an international situation like this but it is believed the bribes were agreed to and carried out on american soil and using american banks to make the payments. live in the digital operations center. vai sikahema "nbc 10." happening today in delaware county a woman will be arraigned on charges she murdered her boyfriend. tianna finch is being held without bail. she's accused of shooting to
death mark hudson back in march. he was off duty when he was shot in his home. finch said it was an accident but later she said she acted in self-defense after a fight. a driver slammed into an 8-year-old girl and drove away. the driver hit the second grader around noon on memorial day as the girl was trying to get into her parents' car on south 52nd street near chester avenue on kingsessing. the girl was left with a broken arm, her mother wants that driver to come forward. >> how can you hit somebody's child and not stop to see if they are all right? >> now this is the third child that's been hit by a driver in this area since mid april. the drivers who hit and killed 4-year-old latif wilson and david alcea in kensington still have not turned themselves in. police now believe that a series of robberies targeting students at temple university
are related. the six most recent robberies have happened within blocks of each other just west of the temple university campus in north philadelphia. surveillance video right here, you'll see it, one person likely a teenager is holding the gun. he took off with another person. one of those suspects was seen on a red bicycle. the robbers stole cell phones money and back packs from the students. if you recognize them in that video, call police. a cyber attack on the tax man. the irs says it is notifying more than 100,000 taxpayers who had their information hacked. authorities say the thieves used an online service on the irs website called get transcript to access the data. they had some knowledge about the taxpayers including social security numbers and birth dates. they breached the system from february until this month. stolen information includes tax returns and other data on file with the irs. if you were impacted by the
hacking the irs says it will notify you and provide you with free credit track joog 5:36. 71 degrees. keeping an eye on the engineer. the trains coming to amtrak trains all because of the deadly derailment in philadelphia. first alert weather day for the potential for severe thunderstorms this afternoon. this morning clouds are moving into the area. the humidity it's already here. 71 degrees at 5:37.
now your "nbc 10" weather. 5:39. clouds are moving into the pocono mountains. clouds into philadelphia. we will see breaks of sunshine. this is the line of clouds moving through the area right now. you can see thinning of clouds to the west. we will get sunshine and that will lead to a quick warmup. the heat will fuel storms later today. right now watching a line of storms that extends into west virginia. some heavier downpours to the
north of charleston. that's a potential for our area this afternoon. potential for severe weather. 7:00 this morning, you can see the clouds that will be moving through the area. they thin out. we'll get some sunshine and it will be a quick warmup. upper 80s this afternoon. 10:00 in the morning, mainly shower free. we could see isolated showers move in during the early afternoon hours in alan town. look at the heavy duty weather arriving in western lancaster at the 2:00 hour. sweeping into reading and alan town. 3:00 in the afternoon. by 4:00 chester county will be getting heavy downpours. you can see a line of storms that is popping up ahead of the main line to the west. this is going to be affecting the afternoon and evening commute with the potential for severe weather for our area. keep an eye on the sky this afternoon. seven day forecast with a chance of more storms and i'll show you when we're going to see a break from the heat when i come back in 10 minutes. it's 20 minutes till 6:00 now.
time to get a check of traffic before you head out this wednesday morning. >> "nbc 10" traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching all of our cameras. what are you seeing? >> seeing typical volume and accumulation out on the roadways, guys. schuylkill expressway things are moving along fine around montgomery drive. headed eastbound from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway, just a 13 minute trip there. slightly a little bit more volume if you're headed westbound. out on 422 and no problems at all if you're headed eastbound. just an eight minute trip from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway. no problems there. still monitoring an accident scene in bristol between delaware valley and bensalem. you can see slow going by that scene as the right hand lane is still blocked. amtrak is making a safety change just weeks after that deadly derailment in philadelphia. the railroad says it will place cameras that face inward inside the locomotive. the goal is to monitor engineers at the controls. the cameras will be installed by
the end of the year. the ntsb has not determined if brandon bastian was using his cell phone while the train was moving. 5:42. moldy bathrooms and that's just the beginning. statewide review reveals dangerous conditions in a day care. we'll tell you what to watch out for if you have little ones. facebook fallout. the fate of a penn state fraternity accused of humiliating women with a secret social media page.
tracking storms off to the west. we can finally get much needed rain today in spite of the heat and lack of rain we've seen south jersey is not experiencing drought conditions right now. the department of environmental protection tells us there are no statewide watches or warnings in place but in pennsylvania it's a different story. 27 counties in the keystone state are in drought watch. that includes berks, monroe schuylkill counties. even though we may not be in an official drought yet, it's certainly starting to feel it out there, isn't it? the spillway on the back of the lake that fills an unofficial swimming hole is bone dry. they say this is how the
spillway normally looks and it usually doesn't dry out until the end of the summer. in sunset township at the shang gri law farm that means pumping water two months earlier. they're hoping that the irrigation pond doesn't run dry. >> i think this year will tell that tale. we're not sure. we've made it in the past. we've run it pretty low. we've never started it this earl early. i'm hoping we can make it. >> the guys at the sod farm say this is the driest conditions they've seen in 48 years. happening today, the city of memphis will celebrate the life and legacy of blue's legend b.b. king. later today a procession will take king's body from memphis into mississippi. people there will be wearing blue in honor of b.b. king and the blue joos today a battle over president obama's immigration orders may be a step closer to the u.s. federal appeals court. they refuse to lift the
injunction that puts obama administration programs on hold. those programs would shield millions of undocumented immy grants from deportation. 26 states oppose the program. a fraternity at penn state is suspended for the next three years over the secret facebook page showing photos of naked women. the women were humiliated through sexual harassment and hazing hazing. the pictures showed nude or partially nude women who appeared to be passed out. important information to pass along for all volunteers with children in pennsylvania. >> new laws are in affect where parents get background checks. the parents have to successfully clear their background checks by july 1st. volunteers at all schools would also need to be checked for any criminal or child abuse history. volunteers can submit a background check online but some parents could end up paying as much as $50 to do that.
a new report shows problem day cares in pennsylvania are still getting state money to watch children. a new audit found that many day cares violated health and safety rules. take a look at some of the conditions found during some of the inspections. auditors found moldy bathrooms, dangerous items left in areas where kids play. inspectors went to 20 daze day cares including 17 in philadelphia. 17 violated one state requirement. a philadelphia day care lied about criminal charges against one of its operations managers. that day care has been suspended pending the outcome of a trial. the auditors did not release the names of the day cares they inspected but they did give the names to the state so that officials can take some action. we'll keep you posted. happening today, we'll get the forecast for this year's atlantic hurricane season. noaa will predict how many named
storms they're expecting and how strong the storms can be. the atlantic hurricane season begins monday and runs through november 30th. no threat of a hurricane here but you're watching potentially severe storms? >> yes. yesterday hot and not all that humid. today we had heat and humidity in a line of storms i'm watching. we are starting off with clouds. cape may camera showing some cloudiness in the area. no sign of any rain. that rain will be late this afternoon and into the evening hours but we could see strong storms develop. potential for severe weather. damaging winds and heavy downpours. right now we are quiet and warmer than yesterday. i've issued a first alert for the chance of storms later today. damaging winds and heavy downpours are a severe storm threat late afternoon and evening hours. time for an evening commute. before the storms roll in it will be summer like heat. it will feel closer to 90 today.
severe weather threat as well as including alan town reading, wilmington. late this evening. we are starting off with some clouds. there are going to be breaks of sunshine. that's when we'll get that quick warmup during the day. it's already warmer this morning. 6 degrees warmer in philadelphia but look at alan town reading, lancaster. 9 degrees warmer than yesterday. we are in the 70s to start with. a few spots in the 60s. millville at 69. 69 in wrightstown. you get chillier temperatures north and west. 69 degrees right now in penn town. watching the radar screen today. lots of clouds so far. no showers just yet. the line of showers that we're watching are moving through west virginia. that's where the heavier downpours are right now. your hour-by-hour forecast the clouds, they will thin out for some sunshine. 72 degrees at 7:00. by 10:00 it will be closer to 80
degrees. into the 80s. storm free at 1:00 this afternoon but later on this afternoon, that's when we'll see the storms. steamy again tomorrow. closer to 90 degrees with a chance of late-day storms on thursday and again on friday. saturday we have the heat but not the storms. finally turning a bit cooler sunday but there's still a possibility we'll see showers and thunderstorms sunday and into monday. just 71 monday afternoon. 74 with partly sunny skies tuesday joompt tuesday. bill, thanks. let's hope the ac is working well in your car. you'll need it again. >> 9 minutes before 6:00 ac on. what do people need to know on the roads, jessica boyington? >> first we're doing a check fast on all new jersey roads. route 73 around the exit ramp for route 38. traffic no problems. southbound some good news there. in berlin new jersey there's a sinkhole on the westbound ramg p. that is closed to head towards
haddon avenue. an accident investigation scene on elm road. if you want to get by that jump on route 55 if you want to take a highway or south orchard road to get through that area. still monitoring the accident on the pa turnpike in bristol northbound. all lanes are being blocked right now, possibly for the removal of that overturned tractor-trailer. as they're moving it around between delaware valley and bensalem you'll have some back up behind that scene. 5:52 now. happening today. the wilmington city council will host a ground breaking ceremony for a new park honoring former resident and former resident bob marley. one love park will have new playground equipment, improved lighting or gated front entrance. those are a few of the changes you'll see. it will have a grand opening later. we'll keep you posted on that. making the grade and making a difference. >> put your wrist through here. >> "nbc 10" introduces you to a
