gesture before last night's game. >> testimony begins today in the bridgegate trial. hear what prosecutors are saying about chris christie's involvement as witnesses get ready to take the stand. nbc 10 news starts now. >> 5:30. 69 degrees. welcome to tuesday. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. let's start with meteorologist bill henley in the nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. warm and cloudy today, bill? t. is going to be warm and cloudy. we're starting with clouds and fog, all that moisture from yesterday and now we have fog this morning. allentown, pottstown,ç reading hazleton, dense fog in each of those locations. thick fog is thickening up in quakertown, too. light fog, though, in new jersey and delaware where clouds are lingering. even a few showers for the shore. you'll see those on and off during the day today. for philadelphia, it's dry, 69 degrees right now. mostly cloudy skies during the day today. temperatures will climb into the
80s this afternoon with no sign of any showers for philadelphia but at the shore it's a different story as the temperatures climb inland to 79 degrees. the shore communities will still see scattered showers, 74 degrees this afternoon. i'll go through this forecast each of these areas hour by hour to show you when showers will move in and when fog will move out when i come back in just a few minutes. first let's see how the traffic is moving. jessica boyington with an update. >> thanks, bill. we're starting off on the schuylkill around the vine street expressway, both directions looking okay so far east and westbound. in or out of the city we're doing okay. not seeing the morning time delays yet. we have another hour or so for that. moving over into new jersey, robbinsville, a downed pole on route 130 southbound around church road. just the right lane is blocked there. take 295 as an alternate. we're looking at 295 in hamilton around route 33. you can see the north and southbound sides looking great. if you're heading towards
trenton or philadelphia, you'll be just fine there. more updates on your pa roads when i come back in the next ten. 5:31. an update on breaking news we were telling you about from the philippines. a saudi airline plane sent a distress call by mistake. before landing in manila. the plane was sent to an isolated section of an airport as an extra precaution. passengers are now getting off. this among, a suspect is in custody and facing attempted murder charges after a weekend of explosions in new york and north jersey. >> nbc 10's matt delucia is live for us in the digital operations center this morning. working on what's going to happen next with ahmad khan rahami. walk us through what's going to happen. >> vai and tracy, investigators say it's incredible how quickly this manhunt came to an end. rahami has been charged with five attempts of murder. one of the big questions is why. another big question, did this suspect act alone? new york's police commissioner
says now that the manhunt is over, the investigation can focus on those questions. rahami has not made any statements to investigators yet. he is accuse of planting bombs in new york and new jersey over the weekend. the manhunt came to an end after rahami was spotted sleeping next to a bar in lyndon, new jersey. this was yesterday morning. rahami was not on any terror watch list. right now investigators are busy building their case. >> we're going to take a lot of care and time to make sure if we bring charges federally in the manhunt district court we do it in a way that's careful and thorough. >> u.s. intelligence officials tell nbc news that ahmad's father and brother travelled to pakistan and afghanistan multiple times over the last decade. live in the digital operations center, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> we're learning more about the life and background of bombing suspect ahmad khan rahami. >> he's been in the u.s. since he was a boy.
he came with his family from afghanistan in 1995. government officials tell nbc news the familqç was granted asylum in 2011. last night, the suspect's father spoke exclusively to nbc news. >> sir? >> i'm not sure what's going on. >> you're not sure? >> i'm not sure what's happening. it's very hard right now to talk. okay? >> u.s. intelligence officials told nbc news that the suspect, his father and brother traveled to pakistan and afghanistan multiple times over the last decade. this picture is said to be from a trip there three years ago. and today, testimony begins in the bridgegate trial of two former aides to new jersey governor chris christie, bill baroni and bridget kelly are accused of causing a massive traffic jam as political revenge again the mayor of ft. lee who did not endorse christie for re-election. a federal prosecutor told jurors that a witness will testify that new jersey governor chris christie was told about a plan to close traffic lanes near the
george washington bridge in 2013. christie has continually denied having any knowledge of the alleged plot. >> a man convicted of killing the mother of his teenage girlfriend in lehigh county is sentenced to life without parole. a judge hand down the sentence for caleb barnes. barnes stabbed 54-year-old cheryl slavonik while her 14-year-old daughter jamie watched. jamie pled guilty earlier this year and is serving a sentence of 35 years to life. barnes' attorney says his klein the will appeal. 5:35. three people are recovering after being shot in philadelphia's point breeze neighborhood. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon at 1 th and wharton streets. a mother carrying her baby was hit along with a woman in her 60s. police took a man with a semiautomatic weapon that custody for questioning. the man has not been charged and police are still trying to figure out if he is the shooter. the nation's oldest income plan is the offline this
morning. this was scheduled, oyster creek plant was shut down so workers could do maintenance and refuel. oyster creek will close permanently in 2019. ♪ for the ramparts we watched >> if you watched the eagles game in chicago, you saw them all stand for the national anthem. three players did so while raising fists in protest. birds safety malcolm jenkins kept his promise to follow the symbolic example first set by 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. the anthem protest is designed to shine a light on social injustice. we asked eagles fans about the gesture by jenkins. steven means and ron brooks. >> i don't think during the national anthem is the forum to
make their protests. >> i don't think it's inappropriate. why would it be inappropriate? they're standing and they're representing. so it's part of history. >> i thought it was pretty good. it almost reminds me of the night in the olympics doing the same type of setup. >> none of the chicago bears joined in the demonstration. rookie quarterback carson wentz led the eagles to a win in chicago and the 2-0 start of the season, wentz and the eagles used two quick bears turnovers to pull away in the third quarter as the birds beat the bears, 29-14.ç >> stevens did a great job giving us great field position. those two scores separated and obviously were big momentum swingers for the game. >> the undefeated eagles will host the unbeaten pittsburgh steelers this sunday at the linc at 4:25. meanwhile, decision 2016, former president george h.w. bush, a staunch republican,
plans to vote for democrat hillary clinton for president in november. >> the word comes from a former maryland lieutenant governor kathleen townsend, the daughter of robert f. kennedy. townsend says bush told her of his plans when the two met yesterday. hillary clinton made her pitch to young voters at temple university yesterday, focusing on issues that millennials care about like health care and student debt. she also discussed the bombing scares in new york and north jersey. clinton praised first responders for their actions. she also mentioned that a suspect arrested. >> we must remain vigilant. this is a fast-moving situation. and a sobering reminder that we need steady leadership in a dangerous world. >> and donald trump told a crowd in florida that he disagrees. trump said law enforcement should start profiling. he also blamed the bombings on
clinton and president obama's immigration policies. >> she is not the right person to solve a problem that largely her and obama gave us. that obama gave us. >> trump will be back in our area on thursday for a rally in delaware county. now, trump's son, donald jr. is taking some heat for his tweet he posted overnight. the graphic compared syrian refugees to skittles candies saying if i had a bowl of skittles, and i told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful? that's our syrian refugee problem. the makers of skittles responded with this tweet, skittles are candies. ref his are people. we done the feel it's an appropriate analogy. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 5:39. clouds over philadelphia. a live view from center city. clouds in the city, still some showers at the shore.
cape may, look at the damp conditions at the marina. those showers coming through southern delaware and into cape may. light showers this morning. though there is a chance we could see a downpour with a thunderstorm during the day today. less likely inland. should stay dry, though there's still plenty of clouds over trenton, philadelphia and wilmington. they'll be slow to clear out today. 69 degrees right now with clouds in place, it will stay cool to begin with. upper 70s by noontime. the clouds will be thinning out this afternoon. 83 degrees by 4:00 this afternoon. suburbs seeing fog right now with lingering clouds. the fog will disappear. the clouds will hang out for the rest of the morning. it's this afternoon. we should see thinning of the clouds and get breaks of sunshine. the lehigh valley, that's where you're more than likely to get sunshine today. 66 degrees with foggy conditions for much of the area, by 10:00, 71. the fog will be gone. it's into the 80s with a little bit of a breeze at ç4:00 out o the north at 84 degrees.

people. an off-duty police officer shot and killed the attacker, a somali american immigrant. isis claimed the man is one of its soldiers. authorities say they've not found any evidence that the terror group was directly involved. one of the victims said he begged for his life as the attacker struck him on the back and went after his pregnant girlfriend. take a look. >> i ran after him, i'm screaming don't touch her, she's pregnant. from me screaming he turned around to look at me and slightly missed her. >> the victim's girlfriend managed to escape with a minor scratch to her neck. 5:47 and 69 degrees outside. north korea says it's tested a new rocket engine which is indication the country will soon try to launch a long-range rocket. north korea is openly working on developing nuclear missiles that can strike the u.s. mainland. it's been hit with harsh sanctions because of the military move.ç now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we're looking at some serious fog in the suburbs this
morning. zero visibility in hazleton, down to a quarter mile in reading and pottstown. allentown and quakertown have improvement. a little bit of the breeze is working and that will help to do away with the fog. light fog for trenton and northeast philadelphia. plenty of clouds but not so much fog. there's moisture left over from the rain yesterday. 63 degrees in the suburbs. 70 in south jersey and the jersey shore. and in philadelphia be that's 69 degrees at philadelphia international, 71 in pennsport. 68 in mt. airy. not too different this morning thanks to the cloud cover overhead. lots of clouds but no showers for philadelphia, wilmington and trenton. where you'll find it is at the shore. scattered light showers this morning, most of the day it is going to be cloudy with occasional showers at the shore. inland just cloudy skies with showers limited to areas closer
to the coastline. this is the hour by hour forecast that shows at 8:00 this morning, mainly dry in philadelphia. you might see a sprinkle, northern burlington county. the best chance of seeing more showers during the day, possibly even a thunderstorm will be in southern delaware and at the jersey shore. this is 2:00 this afternoon. by later this afternoon, we'll get breaks of sunshine for inland areas. still watching a few scattered showers closer to the shore and in southern delaware and a bit farther to the south. we're not out of the wet weather exactly just yet nor the clouds either. we will be warmer, warming out of the 70s into the low 80s this afternoon for philadelphia, 83 degrees. fog to start with in west chester and kutztown, that clears out for sunshine. you'll see more sunshine in the lehigh valley than the rest of the area today. afternoon temperatures, well, they'll be in the 80s with warmer weather to come over the next couple days. we will see a warmup timed perfectly for the beginning of autumn. the 10 day on 10 has 85 degrees

one lane is getting by. you can see very slowly as well. it's a freshly -- a new accident pretty much. all of this police activity and the nj crews just got to the scene. it might be a little bit before we see this clearing out of the way. it's on the left-hand çside. it's not on the shoulder. it's blocking an entire lane. we're watching a road obstruction in collegeville, montgomery county, 8th avenue and chestnut street. a humpback whale is free after getting stuck in shallow water and entangled in a fishing net after the coast of australia. marine park rangers were called in to help the 39-foot whale. once the net was cut, the whale was able to thrash itself free and swim out to sea with the help of the rising tide. ahead, hear why the grade of gasoline you get may not make a difference at all. be sure to vote for our high school blitz came of the week. the choices are --
good morning, everyone. jessica boyington right now watching the roads. a problem in langhorne on 95, on the southbound side, left lane is completely blocked with big delays behind it right around route 413 and route 1. one lane is trickling by. we are seeing emergency cruise on the northbound side. gaper delays and small delays on the northbound side. most of the traffic is heading southbound by the scene. we'll check in with jersey roads when i'm back at 6:00. you may be wasting your money if you fill your car with premium gas and it's designed to run on regular. that's the finding of new research done by aaa. premium can cost about 50 cents more a gallon.
