the first of his nominees prepare to be grilled. that as senate democrats went into the wee hours of the morning holding a marathon series against republican's efforts to repeal the affordable care act. with trump cabinet confirmation hearings set to start, both sides are bracing for a fight. first up, trump's pick to head homeland security general john kelly and his choice for attorney general, senator jeff sessions. it's sessions who's taking the brunt of the controversy as his civil rights record comes under fire with groups like naacp and aclu denouncing his nomination. democrat cory booker is set to come out against jeff sessions. trump says his nominees, particularly sessions, should slide through. >> i think every nomination will be -- they're all at the highest level. jack was even saying, i mean, they are the absolute highest level. i think t

be donald trump's first attempt to rebut president obama's speech. they're going to hear the departing remarks of the 44th president. hundreds upon hundreds embraced the temperatures to score tickets. it marks a homecoming for president obama who will remain in d.c. after he steps down from office. here's what aides tell nbc's chris janseng. the president has been working hard on this. he looks to shine a light on his accomplishments over the last eight years. >> the running press to my career has been that when ordinary people get involved, come together in collective effort, things change for the better. that's the imperative of citizenship. the idea that with hard work, people who love their country can change it. that will be the focus of my farewell to you this tuesday. >> nbc will have full coverage of the president's remarks

6:00 p.m. pacific. right now a massive manhunt is underway for a murder suspect. two police officers were killed while searching for markeith loyd who was accused of fatally shooting a pregnant mother. authorities have announced a $60,000 reward. here's nbc's jacob rascon with the details. >> reporter: orlando law enforcement reeling saying an emotional good-bye to two of their own including master sargeant debra clayton shot outside a walmart. >> we're going to bring this dirt bag to justice and he's going to jail. >> reporter: it started in this parking lot around 7:15 a.m. clayton confronted murder suspect markeith loyd yelling at him to stop when he opened fire hitting the officer. >> he pulled a gun and started shooting. that's when the officer started backing up and returning fire. >>

loyd shot at a cruiser, car jacking a bystander before disappearing. >> the man we're looking for is dangerous. >> reporter: during the search another tragedy. norman lewis involved in the manhunt on his motorcycle was killed in a traffic accident. >> everybody knows this guy and he's a loving, wonderful human being. >> reporter: investigators had already been searching for loyd for nearly a month. the only suspect in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. clayton, a wife and mother was also a 17 year veteran of the orlando police department. one of the first officers to respond to the pulse nightclub shooting last summer. >> jacob rascon. the suspected ft. lauderdale shooter esteban santiago was taken into custody yesterday. he was told he could receive the death penalty. two months before the shooting santiago walked into an fbi office in

with a loaded handgun magazine. he appeared agitated and he was taken to a mental health facility with his gun taken away. four days later he was freed and the police gave his gun back. they believe that was the gun that he used at the airport on friday. in light of the chain of events experts have called for the fbi to increase scrutiny for people like santiago who appear threatening. they argue the bureau does not have the resources or legal mandate. call it rematch revenge. clemson defies the odds. alabama crimson tide rolling into tampa for the game of the year against the underdog clemson tigers. we pick up the action in the fourth quarter, less than 5 minutes to go. clemson's wayne dalman takes it up the middle. then with just over 2:00 to

that's right. the president-elect has met with alibaba executive chairman jack ma over the plan to create some 1 million jobs in america. now the chinese e commerce giant said it will be aimed largely at small businesses in the northwest. they want to help the businesses sell their products on the online products. they can range from agricultural goods, garments and even wine according to jack ma. the entrepreneur who donald trump praised one of the best in the world also spoke about improving u.s. and chinese relations. elsewhere today, investors will be keeping an eye on yahoo! because of the merge that yahoo! intends to rename itself to altaba. altaba will simply be the holding company that includes key stakes in alibaba and yahoo!. it's also emerged that yahoo! ceo marissa mayer will be
