Subject: goodbye!
This audio is a lengthy, expanded discussion on how to explain your decision when folks inquire. But here's a much better and concise answer -
"I didn't choose this, they (he/she) did. My absence is only a natural result of their (his/her) treatment of me. A person can only take so much of being treated a certain way. Eventually a person wakes up and comes to their senses and realizes that they have had enough."
Maybe this would be a better response when people inquire. But remember - you owe explanations to no one. Respect yourself.
