Parker (LeRoy Mason) steals cattle from the cattlemen and blames it on the turpentiners. Then he incites the cattlemen to burn down the turpentiners trees. When Gene finds the rustled cattle he tries to kill him. Failing, he kills both Gene's father (Charles Middleton) and Bayliss Baynum (Russell Simpson) and has Gene arrested for Baynum's murder.

One Of The Best Of The Early Autry Pictures
After two years of Gene Autry films, Republic Pictures re-made his first and re-worked the story and made it better and knowing now who his main audience was played directly to it. Nobody in pictures was bigger in the South than Autry, so it stands to reason that this would be set in Georgia in a feud between cattlemen and hillbillies. No sagebrush and sand here.
Everything clicks here too, the songs are nicely integrated, the characters though a bit broad are all quite good. You have to overlook a couple of things of the day. Child beating and abuse and the understated romance between a 30 year old Autry and a underage teen (as played by 31 year old Betty Bronson, looking half her age. She was quite fetching and left films after this for many years.)
Charles Middleton and Russell Simpson were two old pros and not very likeable here. LeRoy Mason very smooth and understated as the main bad guy.
Co-Star Smiley Burnett has the "Gabby Hayes", role in this one from the original "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", and he's much better than Hayes by a long shot.
Lots of action, shooting, good acting and a good story albeit off the beaten path somewhat, make this one of Autry's best.
Print here is the restored version and is superior and so is the sound in this MPEG-4 download. Highly recommended. Enjoy.
