The lateral and directional behavior of the Canberra PR 3 VX 181 during survey flights is discussed. Flight trials showed that even under calm air conditions a short-period oscillation in heading and angle of bank existed with both the period (2 to 4 sec.) and the magnitude varying with M no. and altitude. General wanders in heading and bank also appeared to be independent of M no. and, in the case of angle of bank, independent of altitude for the time intervals between successive photographs...

A study was made of the possibility of the development of phosphor- bronze and partially superconducting metallic bolometers for operation at very low temperatures. Measurements were made of the current-noise power in Ta and leaded phosphor-bronze in the liquid He-temperature region, the noise power being obtained as a function of the frequency of observation from 200 to 4000 c. p.s. No current noise was observed in Ta in the normal or superconducting states at 4.2 deg K. In the intermediate...

Studies are to be made on the fluctuations in small areas of daytime sky, the quality of scattered blue daylight sky, and the extension of daytime and nighttime astronomical seeing to the near infrared. A photoelectric photometer was designed to make a permanent record of the behavior of areas observed by the 12.5-in. refracting telescope. The photometer uses a 1P21 photomultiplier tube, and has interchangeable filters and diaphragms and a solid CO2-cooled tube chamber. Illumination patterns of...

Equipment is being developed for the recording and analysis of fluctuations in brightness and color of starlight and daylight, with emphasis on daytime observations. The observations are to provide a possible basis for the study of upper atmospheric conditions from the ground. Eight apertures were calibrated by determining the ratios of the photoelectric signals received from an artificial constant source. A search of daytime sky was made with a photometer having a diaphragm which was made with...

The design of an optimum filter is postulated to be difficult when synthesis is attempted on a frequency-response basis. If synthesis is carried out on an impulse-responce basis, this type of filter can be very nearly approximated by a tapped delay line, weighting networks, and an adding circuit. A formula derived for setting the threshold voltage in the pulse-train correlator appears to combat satisfactorily the effect of pure constant- amplitude pulse jamming. A pulse-train generator was...

The thermionic and photoelectric emissions were measured as Cs was added to an oxidized Ag sheet. Two photoelectric and 2 thermionic emission maxima were found, but their yields were not proportional. The gross Cs/O atomic ratio was generally less than 2.0 throughout the time range for which the infrared response (photoelectric emission) was appreciable. At the maximum thermionic emission the Cs content was less than that corresponding to Cssub2O, which supports the hypothesis that Cssub2O is...

All but 1 physicist completed the problem series; more than 1/4 of the American Studies group could not solve 1 or more problems. There were significant differences between the variabilities and the means of the trials for the first 2 problems, but no significant differences between the means of time scores. The correlation between the total time and the number of moves was significant for the physicists, but...

Cylinders were constructed with cores weak in shear (cellular cellulose acetate, CCA) and cores strong in shear (end-grain balsa, EGB) to check the validity of theoretical procedures for predicting over-all buckling and wrinkling. The 1/8-in.-thick sandwich was considered to have the minimum thickness feasible. To study the wrinkling behavior of cylinders under bending loads, a 1/2-in.-thick sandwich...

The improvement of the reliability of IFF systems is being studied. This report is an investigation of the communication aspects of the ground-to- air IFF system. Factors affecting reliability are atmospherics, receiver noise, inadequate space resolution, garbling, and jamming and deception on the part of the enemy. The last factor was given prime consideration. Examples are given of the use of redundancy coding to improve the reliability of pulse-train transmissions in the presence of noise,...

A new method for the determination of nitrate in sea water, based on the polarographic reduction of nitrate in the presence of uranyl ions, was investigated. It was found that sulfate ions depress the reduction current by a definite proportion depending on the chlorinity of the water sample. Chlorinities in the range of 14 to 19 parts per thousand gave a constant effect. Fluoride interfered strongly with the reduction of nitrate, but the use of A1 or ZrO salts satisfactorily eliminated this...

Differential-equation, variational, and integral-equation methods for determining natural modes and frequencies of transverse vibration of beams are outlined, and their limitations are discussed. The methods described are applicable to straight beams with symmetric cross section which vibrate in the plane of symmetry. They yield satisfactory results for modes whose half-wave length is long in comparison to the average height of the beam.1

Objective check-flight booklets were developed and tested in the presolo and basic-instrument stages. Reliability coefficients were computed from successive independent check rides on 100 students graded by the existing check-flight forms. The ride-ride reliability was not increased by the new objective forms. It was concluded that the complexity of the new forms made them impractical for routine use. More than 1 check flight should be given to provide reasonably accurate prediction.

The decrease of air-blast peak pressure with distance along the water surface was studied for shallow underwater explosions. Peak pressures were obtained from shock-front velocity measurements by using the Rankine-Hugoniot equation. The shock-front velocity and sound velocity were determined from measurements taken directly from the film record. The slopes of the pressure- distance curves for the region observed (45 to 200 charge radii) were lower than those from a charge in the air. The...

Fluorine-containing silicones were synthesized by reacting an F - containing Grignard reagent with SiClsub4, or tetraethyl silicate, and hydrolyzing the monomer silane product. The F-containing styrenes (3-(trifluoro-methyl)stryene, 3,5,-bis(trifluormoethyl)styrene, and 2,5,-bis(trifluoromethyl) styrene) were copolymerized with butadiene by an emulsion technique. These materials are to be evaluated as low-temperature, fuel-resistant elastomers. A literature review of fluorinated styrenes and...

Two high-intensity air-borne sound generators, a siren and a je r T- type whistle, were used to study the effects of sound on liquid suspensions of bacteria. Special techniques and exposure chambers were developed. Lethal effects and cellular disruption were most obvious wit certain strains of Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus, but they were irreproducible over a period of months. The experiments failed to elucidate the mode of action of the acoustic field in producing a sharp threshold for the...

A covered wagon launcher was built as a solution to the problem of inflating and launching large Moby Dick plastic balloons in adverse weather conditions. The unit employs a 40-ft. flat bed as a base with a headboard and side framewoek constructed of pipe and angle iron covered with canvas. An airplane cloth cover forms the top piece. The gas bubble is inflated inside the covered wagon and released by removing one side and the headboard connections of the top cover. Thirty-two test flights and...

Research was conducted to develop electrodeposited coatings sup erior to Zn and Cd plate for aircraft steel parts, particularly in tropical regions. A 50% Mn-50% Zn coating, superior to Zn under wet-dry cabinet conditions, was prepared by heat-treating a duplex coating of Mn and Zn electroplates to cause interdiffusion. Diffusion coatings of Mn-Sn alloys containing 40 to 60% Mn showed better inherent corrosion resistance than pure Mn. No sound Zn-Ag codeposits were obtained with either an...

Tests were made on 42- and 51-in. diameter rotorchutes with either 2 or 4 untapered and untwisted blades with airfoil section. The rotorchute which is an autorotating propeller was suggested for use instead of a parachute to decrease the descent velocity of free-falling loads. In vertical descent and proper autorotation tor rotorchutes had a drag coefficient referred to the rotor-disk area of 1.0 to 1.3 and a tip speed ratio (circumferential speed to sinking speed) of 4.4 to 9.3. The maximum...
