We present an algorithmc model for distributed computation of fixed points whereby several processors participate simultaneously in the calculations while exchanging information via communication links. We place essentially no assumption on the ordering of computation and communication between processors thereby allowing for completely uncoordinated execution. We find that even under these potentially chaotic circumstances it is possible to solve several important classes of problems including...

Sympathetic postganglionic neurons (SPNs) located in sympathetic ganglia represent the final common sympathetic motor output. Even though SCI produces a profound plasticity in sympathetic autonomic function, the extent that SCI-induced dysautonomia is based on SPN changes within the thoracic paravertebral sympathetic chain is unknown. Given their strategic site in autonomic signaling to body, any plasticity is likely to be of high significance, yet there is a paucity of studies undoubtedly due...

The drift shells of protons in a model magnetic field are calculated. The observed radial gradient of the protons is combined with the calculated drift shells to predict the flux levels at several local times for different pitch angles and energies. A simplified method is used to describe the drift shells. The field model is a three term Mead model, which is fit to the observed B values at synchronous orbit. The resulting predicted local time dependent fluxes match the observed fluxes very well...

The increasing decentralization of computing resources and the proliferation of personal and small business computers create new problems in computer security. One such problem is the protection of externally supplied software, i.e., software supplied by other than the users/owners of these small computers. In the case of personal and small business computers, proprietary software serves as the primary example. In distributed systems comprised of autonomously managed nodes, members of the user...

An analytical study was made of the feasibility of using an MHD- augmented arc as the primary component of a large reentry vehicle test facility. Computer studies of the performance of MHD accelerator channels were made for systems having channel input power of 50 MW to 1,700 MW. It was determined that complete simulation of reentry conditions is not possible in a single extended- flow facility. The studies showed, however, that very large increases in performance over existing arc facilities...

Test and evaluation (T and E) managers often control testing via heuristics (i.e., using experience and lessons learned from previous testing to modify existing range control procedures). An exclusively heuristic approach may prove difficult in predicting test control issues with new systems. This information is very useful the studying of propagation of electro-magnetic waves and messages in the atmosphere. Initial efforts are aimed at generating an easily accessible data base for 1-2 years of data. Subsequent work will use the data in spectral and maximum entropy modelling. (Author)

Experiments have begun on the investigation of the thermodynamics and phase equilibrium of the Ga-Cr-As system and the solubility and diffusivity of Cr in GaAs under selected conditions of temperature and source composition. Allied experiments on the influence of defects in GaAs have shown that stable front surface Cr depletion channels can be formed in GaAs for retarding the outdiffusion of Cr. Investigations of the influence of non-stoichiometric regions introduced by implantation (as...

Computational theories of structure from motion (Ullman, 1979) and stereo vision (Marr and Poggio, 1979) only specify the computation of three-dimensional surface information at special points in the image. Yet, the visual perception is clearly of complete surfaces. In order to account for this, a computational theory of the interpolation of surfaces from visual information is presented. The problem is constrained by the fact that the surface must agree with the information from stereo or...

A summary of a new high-speed method of acquiring longitudinal spatial coherence functions is described within the context of imaging. The technique modulates incident spatial information onto spectral carrier frequencies, which can then be de-modulated in both amplitude and phase. An analysis of the technique's spatial and spectral resolution limits is also provided.

The purpose of the work was to study the low rf-field loss of A15 superconducting compounds. This type of superconducting material has potential for application to the construction of microwave energy storage cavities whose energy can be dumped in a very short time so as to produce a very large microwave power pulse. An apparatus, using a calorimetric technique, was developed to measure the surface resistance of small-area superconducting samples deposited on sapphire substrates. Both a Nb and...

This document describes a theoretical and experimental study of the interaction of high power, high frequency radio waves with the lower ionosphere. The theoretical calculations presented here show that the electron temperature of the ionospheric plasma can be greatly enhanced when the plasma is irradiated by a powerful groundbased HF transmitter with an effective radiated power of the order of 100 MW. If this plasma heating is maintained for times exceeding a few seconds, the composition of...

tohis study examined the effect of sulfur-containing compounds on the storage stability of Jet A turbine fuel. It was found that alkyl sulfides and disulfides increased the fuel's stability while all thiols and thiophene derivatives tested decreased fuel stability (increased deposit formation) at temperatures and sulfur concentrations selected. Linear Arrhenius plots of sulfur-spiked fuel samples demonstrated that deposit formation decreased with increased slope for all alkyl sulfides, alkyl...

Information obtained from a questionnaire to which 312 male surface warfare junior Officers (JOs) responded was used to determine how JOs felt their wives influenced their intent to pursue a Navy career, and how their wives felt about separations, relocations, pay, and benefits of Navy life. Officers, in general, felt their wives were supportive of their Navy careers. Separation was considered the worst aspect of Navy life and had the most pronounced influence against a Navy career. Wives who...

DNA vaccine technology holds great promise as a platform for developing vaccines against both emerging and established global pathogens. Despite this potential, significant challenges impede the capacity of DNA vaccines to prevent disease in humans. Foremost amongst these, is the gap between remarkable results obtained in pre-clinical mouse models and relatively modest immunogenicity observed in humans. The present work is testing the hypothesis that skeletal muscle myocytes sense cytosolic DNA...

Using a piezo-electric transducer, wrist activity was recorded simultaneously with EEG, EOG, and EMG to obtain 102 recordings -- 39 from hospital patients and 63 from non-patients -- during both Sleep and Wakefulness. On a minute-to-minute basis, wrist activity alone was used to estimate Sleep Time. Blind independent scoring of the EEG-EOG-EMG records was also done for Sleep and Wakefulness. Results from the two Sleep/Wake estimations agreed 94.5% of the minutes. Correlations between the two...

A recent screening trial showed that the use of low dose computed tomography (LDCT) resulted in a 20 reduction in lung cancer mortality, however there was a 96 false positive rate associated with LDCT. Thus, there is an immediate clinical need to develop a diagnostic biomarker that would select patients with CT detected nodules for further testing. The ease with which blood can be sampled makes it a logical choice in which to discover diagnostic biomarkers, however the clinical utility of tumor...
