Approaches for regulated fluid secretion, which typically relyon fluid encapsulation and release from a shelled compartment,do not usually allow a fine continuous modulationof secretion, and can be dicult to adapt for monitoringor function-integration purposes15. Here, we report selfregulated,self-reporting secretion systems consisting ofliquid-storage compartments in a supramolecular polymer-gelmatrix with a thin liquid layer on top, and demonstrate thatdynamic liquid exchange between the...

This research determined whether the provision of supplementary text would help resolve the problem of auditory overload during military command and control operations. Listeners, twenty-four English-fluent, normal-hearing, males and females, were presented one block of 78 triads of simultaneous messages over a communication headset, under each of twelve listening conditions. The messages were recordings made by two males (left and right ears, respectively) and a female. Listening conditions...

Near-infrared images optimized for astrometry have been obtained for four fields in the high-density L 1688 cloud core over a 12 year period. The targeted regions include deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) and very low luminosity objects too faint and/or heavily veiled for spectroscopy. Relative proper motions in R.A. and decl. were computed for 111 sources and again for a subset of 65 YSOs, resulting in a mean proper motion of (0,0) for each field. Assuming each field has the same...

Most standard approaches to the static analysis of programs, such as the popular worklist method, are first-order methods that inductively annotate program points with abstract values. In [6] we introduced a second-order approach based on Kleene algebra. In this approach, the primary objects of interest are not the abstract data values, but the transfer functions that manipulate them. These elements form a left-handed Kleene algebra. The data flow labeling is not achieved by inductively...

Shot-peening-induced compressive residual stresses are often introduced in Ni-base superalloy components to help prevent or retard surface fatigue crack initiation and early growth at near surface inclusions. In certain cases these compressive residual stresses can shift the fatigue crack initiation site from surface to sub-surface locations. However, the ability to computationally predict the improvement in fatigue life response and scatter due to induced compressive residual stresses are...

Trace properties, which have long been used for reasoning about systems, aresets of execution traces. Hyperproperties, introduced here, are sets of trace properties. Hyperproperties can express security policies, such as secure information flow and service level agreements, that trace properties cannot. Safety and liveness are generalized to hyperproperties, and every hyperproperty is shown to be the intersection of a safety hyperproperty and a liveness hyperproperty. A verification technique...

Some high-performance imaging systems generate a curved focal surface and so are incompatible with focal plane arrays fabricated by conventional silicon processing. One example is a monocentric lens, which forms a wide field-of-view high-resolution spherical image with a radius equal to the focal length. Optical fiber bundles have been used to couple between this focal surface and planar image sensors. However, such fiber-coupled imaging systems suffer from artifacts due to image sampling and...

We have used large-eddy simulation with an immersed boundary method to study turbulent flows over distributions of uniform height, staggered cubes. The computational domains were designed such that both the roughness sublayer and a region of the inertial layer are resolved. With this, we record vertical profiles of time series of fluctuating streamwise and vertical velocity at different locations throughout the domain. As I continued to teach, though, I noticed another gap in the literature. The arguments policymakers and academics were making on how nuclear weapons reductions related to preventing further nuclear proliferation were, at best, uneven. Each of the basic viewsofficial, hawkish, and academicspotlighted some important aspect of the truth, but each was incomplete and surprisingly optimistic. The current official U.S. view, shared by most arms control proponents, is that any state that has nuclear...

Defense institutions play a critical role sustaining military forces and ensuring that those forces are accountable to and supportive of civilian institutions. Any country can find sustaining such institutions a challenge, but the challenge is particularly acute for many African nations, where democratic governance, economic and social well-being, and security, as well as the resources to address these issues, can be limited or simply not exist. Such challenges notwithstanding, the 2014...

This paper deals with the development of vertical and horizontal rows of rectangle surface coils in a cross-hatching called grid array. The purpose of this grid array is for unilateral resonance imaging. Each coil in the horizontal or vertical rows transmits and receives sequentially using switchable array configuration. The coils are tuned, matched, and decoupled to a 28.1MHz resonance using a matchbox pi-circuit with each coil. The results of this paper apply to quadrupole resonance imaging.

Discrete event simulation (DES) enables the analysis of well-defined systems by evaluating the results of events acting upon the system. DES usually skips over timespans where no events occur to enable faster-than-real-time simulation. While this is a powerful and often needed capability, in the domain of real-time emulation, where the events need to be synchronized with other emulated and/or real components, time skipping is not feasible. Brigade support battalion (BSB) staffs, along with company- and battalion-level leaders, constantly must mentally separate the BSB s brigade combat team (BCT)sustainment requirements from internal BSB logistics requirements. BSBs that fail to make this distinction have difficulty executing day-to-day internal battalion operations while supporting the BCT. This statement is based on observations of unit rotations at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
