In this paper, we present analysis of the errors associated with optical photometry used in non-resolved object characterization for the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) community. We begin with an overview of the standard astronomical techniques used to measure the brightness of spatially unresolved objects (point source photometry) in deep space. After discussing the standard astronomical techniques, we present the application of astronomical photometry for the purposes of space object...

We investigate the issue of whether an optical interferometer with baselines long enough to resolve details of a geostationary satellite can be phase stabilized. We conclude that it is possible to phase such an interferometer with shorter baselines using the techniques of baseline and wavelength bootstrapping, and that these shorter baselines are not so short as to make the instrument impractical. We conclude by showing the trade-off between the number of telescopes needed to phase the longest...

This paper discusses the design of an automated imaging system for size characterization of debris produced by the DebriSat hypervelocity impact test. The goal of the DebriSat project is to update satellite breakup models. A representative LEO satellite, DebriSat, was constructed and subjected to a hypervelocity impact test. The impact produced an estimated 85,000 debris fragments. The size distribution of these fragments is required to update the current satellite breakup models. An automated...

One of the challenges of imaging satellites in the daytime is that the sun is generally behind the satellite from the observers point of view. This means that much of the satellite structure can be in shadow at any given time. The Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing (AMOS) observatorys 3.6 meter telescope has the capability of recording data simultaneously in two bands of long-wave infrared (LWIR) as well as visible. This presents the possibility of performing joint processing of the...

The Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) is a unique observatory that is especially well-suited for interferometric imaging. The key features are an array layout that includes equally, or nearly equally-spaced stations, the ability to observe with 6 telescopes simultaneously, the beam-relay system exibility that allows the 6 observed stations to be placed in a chain-configuration, the reconfigurability that allows the telescopes to be moved, and wide wavelength coverage at visible...

Ionospheric Scintillation refers to random fluctuations in phase and amplitude of electromagnetic waves caused by a rapidly varying refractive index due to turbulent features in the ionosphere. Scintillation of trans-ionospheric VHF/UHF satellite communications and L-Band navigation radio frequency signals is particularly troublesome. This phenomenon degrades signal strength and integrity, negatively affecting satellite communications and navigation, radar, or radio signals from other systems...

In the first decade of this century, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models were first used in an artillery meteorological (MET) system to produce MET messages. The development and testing of the new system required a means to generate MET messages from the NWP model output and produce the same types of messages from radiosonde-based data for test purposes. The Army has fielded 2 major upgrades since that first system, but the message generation methodology has remained much the same. The US...

Making sense of massive data sets is a problem for many military domains including space. With unwieldy big data sets used for space situational awareness (SSA), important trends and outliers may not be easy to spot especially not at-a-glance. One method being explored to visualize SSA data sets is called treemapping. Treemaps fill screen space with nested rectangles (tiles) of various sizes and colors to represent multiple dimensions of hierarchical data sets. By mapping these dimensions...

Object characterization is the description of a resident space object (RSO), its capabilities, and its behavior. This paper explores object characterization methods using photometric data. An important property of RSO photometric signatures is the changes in intensity that they exhibit with respect to changes in viewing angle or orientation. Properties that influence the brightness of the photometric signature include geometry, orientation, material characteristics and stability. For this...

From December 2009 through 2011 the NASA Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) gathered radiometrically exquisite measurements of debris in near Earth orbits, substantially augmenting the current catalog of known debris. The NASA-WISE GEO belt debris population adds potentially thousands previously uncataloged objects. This paper describes characterization of the NASA-WISE GEO belt orbital debris population in terms of location, epoch, and size. Previous studies of collisional rate in GEO...

As a result of the interaction between the spacecraft and its operational environment, the constituent materials begin to change. These changes are determined by a combination of energy deposition, the resulting chemical reactions, and contamination. These changes negatively impact the ability of spacecraft operators to predict the behavior of a spacecraft as it ages. For example, in the case of electrical conduction in polyimide, there is a three orders of magnitude decrease in the resistivity...

The faint moon, Romulus, around the main belt asteroid (87) Sylvia was detected and followed over 6 nights in March and May of 2015, using adaptive optics and a laser guide star on the 3.5 m telescope at the Starfire Optical Range. Romulus was is approximately 81 times fainter than V=12.5 Sylvia at 1.2 microns. From these observations we are able to derive an orbit for the satellite, calculate Sylvias mass, and derive its density of 1.37 plus or minus 0.04 gm/cu cm. These observations closely...

Using broadband and color photometry, analysts can evaluate satellite operational status and affirm its identity. The process of ingesting photometry data and deriving satellite physical characteristics can be undertaken by analysts in batch mode, meaning using an entire batch of data at the conclusion of each observation night, or by automated algorithms in a batch or on-line mode of operation. In an on-line mode, the assessment is generated with each new data point. Tools used for detecting...

Operational communication geosynchronous satellites are typically large structures with long solar panels that maintain a stable attitude relative to the earth and sun. During the equinox periods of the year, the geometry of the satellite, sun and an earth observer is favorable for a condition to occur called a glint, or specular reflection. It is presumed that the glint is caused by the satellite solar panels and has been observed in the past using broadband photometry techniques. In this...

The objective of on-line flagging in this paper is to perform an interactive assessment of geosynchronous satellites anomalies such as cross-tagging of satellites in a cluster, solar panel offset change, etc. This assessment will utilize a Bayesian belief propagation procedure and will include an automated update of the baseline signature data for the satellite, while accounting for the seasonal changes. Its purpose is to enable an ongoing, automated assessment of satellite behavior through its...

Although the amount of light received by sensors on the ground from Resident Space Objects (RSOs) in geostationary orbit (GEO) is small, information can still be extracted in the form of light curves (temporal brightness or apparent magnitude). Previous research has shown promising results in determining RSO characteristics such as shape, size, reflectivity, and attitude by processing simulated light curve data with various estimation algorithms. These simulated light curves have been produced...

The WOAV13 dataset comprises 3D global gridded climatological fields of absolute geostrophic velocity inverted from World Ocean Atlas-2013 (WOA13) temperature and salinity fields using the P-vector method. It provides a climatological velocity field that is dynamically compatible to the WOA13 (T, S) fields. The WOAV13 has the same spatial resolution and temporal variation (annual, monthly, seasonal) as WOA13 (T, S) fields, but does not cover the equatorial zone (5oS 5oN) due to the geostrophic...
