This paper presents on-going investigations on plastic zone development in dynamic tear (DT) type three-point bend specimens used to measure the fracture toughness of marine structural materials. The purpose of the study is to use finite element technology to provide an understanding of the plastic zone development, to determine the upper limit of temperature relative to full size transition curves where elastic plastic fracture becomes invalid. In earlier studies, the authors utilized 2-D...

In this report some preliminary results from target scattering measurements made at the DREA barge in April 2000 are presented. Various targets were mounted on a pole at about 5m distance from a transducer/hydrophone arrangement. The transducer allowed for the generation of harmonic bursts in the 10-100 kHz range and the scattered signals received at the hydrophone were recorded. This data was collected for a plate, spheres, cylinders, and a rock for a variety of centre frequencies and...

A preliminary evaluation of the RANS code CFX-TASCflow for predicting the hydrodynamic forces on a fully appended submarine at a Reynolds number of 20 million is described. Except for drag, TASC flow makes good predictions of the overall forces up to moderate incidence angles using wall functions with a 371,000 node grid. At high incidence angles the predictions break down due to inadequate modeling of separation and shed circulation. The predictions improve with a finer grid and different...

A comparison between experimental and analytical predicted fatigue lives is made for a A517 SAW Weldment subjected to variable amplitude loading. Three, 10 inch wide butt-welded specimens were tested under a variable amplitude load spectrum consisting of 3 yearly storms. The magnitude of the loads in the storm increased and then decreased in a linear manner with the winter storm representing the most severe loading condition. Fatigue crack monitoring was achieved through the use of 20 localized...

Fracture has always been a serious concern in the design and repair of steel structures such as ships. Because of these concerns, much research has been ongoing in the causes of fractures and in ways which they could be predicted and thus prevented. The objective of this study was to find, test and evaluate a method for measuring the critical strain energy density with tensile specimens. Plastic strain at fracture (real strain) was measured for gauge lengths of 1.25 mm and 1.125 mm using an...

The design of a modem warship is a very complex task. Some of the greatest concerns in the design are the selection of proper materials and welding techniques. The aim of the selection is to reach a design, which enables the whole structure to have a ductile behaviour under all operating conditions. This report concentrates on Linear Elastic (K type) tests at temperatures where the Dynamic Tear energy was less than 133 joules for a 16 mm specimen. 133 joules was selected since it has been...

The J-integral is an elastic-plastic fracture criterion, which permits measurement of the fracture toughness of a specimen that has been fractured after general yielding. An understanding of the ratio of plastic zone size (radius) to the crack tip blunting (stretch zone) is required to determine the upper limit of temperature relative to full size transition curves where elastic plastic fracture becomes invalid. This study endeavours to acquire this ratio using finite element techniques. The...

The elastlc strain fields in the neighbourhood of 6 mm and 20 mm deep cracks in bars loaded in three-point bending were measured by neutron diffraction. Calculations of the elastic strain field under the known loads included a stress-concentration contribution approximated by linear elastic fracturemechanics (LEFM). Close to the crack tip, the calculated load-induced strains with the LBFM contribution are in reasonable agreement with the measurements although the agreement is not good far from...

The interactions between a semi-submersible drone and its large towfl.sh, where the tension in the tow cable joining them is about 20 of the weight of the drone, are investigated. Since standard cable dynamics modelling computer programs do not model tow-vehicle/tow-body interactions, an iterative approach to calculating these interactions. is developed. Drone motions are modeled with a non-linear, six degree-of-freedom, underwater vehicle simulation incorporating pre-defined, three component,...

Recent advances in neutron detector technology and the ability of neutrons to penetrate through many millimetres of most engineering materials have made it feasible to investigate the effects of stress-concentration near notches. To demonstrate this capability, the development of the strainfield near a sharp notch in an HY -100 steel bar is scanned as a three-point bending load is increased to the point of metal-tearing. On unloading, residual stresses are scanned. As a second demonstration,...

A system has been developed for rating the corrosivity of aircraft operational environments. This system takes account of weather, atmospheric pollutant, and geographical factors to compute a severity index for three aspects of corrosion maintenance: aircraft washing, repainting, and repair needs. Computed ratings are in good agreement with aircraft corrosion experience and atmospheric testing programs at several locations.

The reduction of the sound radiated by a finite structure immersed in water on one side is of concern in this paper. The purpose of this study is to investigate the decoupling effect of adding a compliant layer between a base structure and the fluid. The vibration response and the acoustic radiation of a baffled, elastic plate covered by a decoupling layer immersed in water is analyzed. The theoretical model uses the Love-Kirchhoff theory to describe the motion of the base plate whereas the...

Nickel aluminum bronzes are used in ship and submarine sea water handling, propulsion and combat systems equipment, as well as in a range of commercial high performance components. Usually, when these alloys fail, they fail by a surface sensitive mechanism such as wear, corrosion, dealloying, cavitation-erosion or corrosion fatigue. To determine if these surface properties could be improved with laser cladding, a laser cladding method was developed and the processing-structure-property...

A comparative study of the finite element analysis of the local stresses in a ship structural detail has been carried out by the members of Technical Committee 0.1 of ISSC '97. An experimental model for the intersection structure of longitudinal stiffeners and a transverse frame was selected as the analysis object. Finite element analysis results of eight shell element models and one solid element model were collected for this comparative study. It is found that the results of shell element...

The Services and the Department of Defense (DOD) have extensive programs designed to ameliorate servicemembers' financial stress. However the key dynamics surrounding financial stress as a stressor by itself or in combination with other factors are not well understood. Financial stress impacts mental and behavioral health as well as servicemember and family function . Financial stress is usually embedded in a web of life stressors and adversities (e.g. change in station, loss of job of a...
