Obesity, which induces low-grade inflammation, is a known risk factor for worse prognosis in many cancers including breast. We found that sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) produced by sphingosine kinases (SphKs) plays a critical role in obesity-related inflammation and breast cancer. Obesity increased S1P in the tumor microenvironment, as well as in the primary tumors. FTY720, a functional antagonist of S1PR1, dramatically decreased cancer progression by reducing expressions of SphK1 and S1PR1, and...

An analytical study was made of the feasibility of using an MHD- augmented arc as the primary component of a large reentry vehicle test facility. Computer studies of the performance of MHD accelerator channels were made for systems having channel input power of 50 MW to 1,700 MW. It was determined that complete simulation of reentry conditions is not possible in a single extended- flow facility. The studies showed, however, that very large increases in performance over existing arc facilities...

In this paper rank estimates, called WLS rank estimates and computed using iteratively reweighted least squares, are studied. They do not require the estimation of auxilliary scale or slope parameters nor do they require numerical search techniques to minimize a convex surface. The price is a small asymptotic efficiency loss. In the location model, beginning with a resistant starting value such as the median, the WLS rank estimates have good robustness and computational properties. The WLS rank...

Oxygen contamination is a potential problem in the study of amorphous metals because of the highly reactive nature of some of the constituent elements of metallic glasses and because of the processing techniques which are used to produce this metastable state. Oxygen is frequently present already in the starting materials, e.g., rare earth elements or early transition metals; further, oxygen present as an impurity in the gaseous atmosphere may be incorporated during alloy preparation (e.g., arc...

Weiss and Worsham's predictions for atomization in high-velocity airstreams appear valid even when extended to higher viscosity fluids than originally derived. Newtonian, and viscoelastic fluids show different breakup mechanisms in high-velocity airstreams, as shown by injection photos, mass median diameters and drop-size distributions. Although not because of increase in viscosity alone, addition of polymer increases resultant particle size from liquids. For a given polymer, mass median...

The pyrolysis of 1-iodopropane has been studied by the Variable Encounter Method(VEM) at temperatures from 625 K to 840 K. Deactivating wall collisions are found to be stronger for this molecule than for the non-polar hydrocarbons previously studied in the same temperature range. Energy transfer collision efficiency declines with rise of wall temperature. The results of this study are compared with earlier steady-state work. (Author)

We have developed a technique to approximate the dynamics of a linear passive QSDE network with time delays, within given limits on the complex plane, by truncation of an expansion in scattering poles.

Rapid and accurate sensing of fissile materials at long range may require GeV muon or multi-GeV proton primary beams at intensities beyond present technological limits, and in configurations that are robust, simple and transportable. The simultaneous achievement of milliampere proton intensities at multiple GeV energies in a single stage accelerator has never been achieved for any accelerator type, and no basic science or applied application requires it. Hence the science of WMD Sensing and...

We identified two barriers to the implementation of large-scale photonic quantum networks. First, as scalability requirescreation of reliable and efficient network components that can be operated in large numbers, we developed chip-integratedphoton sources and circuits achieving low-loss transmission in a small footprint, including a guided-wave photon pair sourcein femtosecond-laser written waveguides and chip-integrated interferometers for complex preparation of entangled states.Second,...

I visited NSWC Combatant Craft Division in Norfolk. The high speed boats, including unmanned surface vehicles, are built and tested there. I investigated the recent trends of high speed boats in US and introduced the progress of our USV project. And I visited NSWC Carderock Division in Bethesda, and of course I also visited MASK facility and other basins in DTMB. I surveyed the recent high speed model tests in NSWC, and discussed whether our seakeeping and maneuvering planing boat model tests...

A new promising way to significantly improve computational efficiency of neurobiological network simulations is to design a neuronal model in the form of difference equations that generates neuronal states in discrete moments of time. In this approach, time step can be made comparable with the duration of action potential (a spike) and capture correctly dynamics of the intrinsic and input-responsive tiring patterns. We propose to use modern DSP ideas to develop new efficient approaches to the...

Although there are closed-form solutions for calculating the Probability of False Accept (PFA) and the Probability of False Reject (PFR) of normally distributed measurement errors, there lacks solutions for non-normal distributions. Extending our knowledge to measurement errors that do not follow the normal distribution is beneficial to lowering the risk of having a high PFA or PFR. This research finds that the Uniform Distribution is generally not useful for assessing PFA and PFR.

One of the overarching challenges of PCRP is to develop effective treatments for advanced prostate cancer. As nano-meter sized vesicles released by many cell types, exosomes serve as vehicles for long range intercellular communications, with the bioactive contents of exosomes as the messengers. It is hypothesized that normal prostate epithelial cells secrete exosomes to keep neighboring epithelial cells from undergoing uncontrolled growth. On the other hand, due to the altered contents of...

The Budget Control Act of 2011 along with sequestration is forcing the Department of Defense to reduce expenditures significantly compared to post 9/11 spending. As the Army reduces in strength, so will the civilian workforce at commensurate levels (Tan, 2015). The civilian Defense workforce has been challenged to address proper age diversity as they seek to balance experience with building the bench for tomorrow. The culprit behind this dilemma is due mostly to the hiring restrictions in place...

Automated speech recognizers (ASR) are now more often found as components inside other applications than as a stand alone application for transcribing speech word-for-word into text. Statistical pattern recognition techniques allow us to acquire a better task-specific evaluation measure for embedded applications than word error rates (WER), which are used for transcription. Our approach considered two applications of ASR: a decision support software system for meetings, in which a summary of a...

Program Managers responsibilities lie in effectively executing cost, performance, and schedule management of acquisition programs and services throughout the Army. Program managers cannot execute programs without the support and assistance of many stakeholders working with members of the program office in an integrated product team fashion under the leadership of the program manager. The U.S. Army contracting command is a key stakeholder in the execution of all Army acquisition programs.The...

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) seeks to establish and provide a set of software quality metrics, measured from common static code analysis tools, which the Department of the Navy can use to measure quality. These metrics provide quality and maturity data through all stages of software development to further ensure that the software delivered meets government-specific requirements. Carefully chosen metrics can direct attention to problems, providing diagnostic value...

This standard process description (SPD) provides the instructions needed in qualifying candidate adhesives for the screening tests specified in ARL-ADHES-QA-001.00, Sections 8.2 and 8.3. The single-lap-joint testing configuration relies upon a relatively small bond area between adherends, which can lead to high standard deviations in measured strengths. Geometrical misalignment and variations in bondline thickness are potential sources of inaccurate property measurements. Poor surface treatment...

The upper atmosphere of the Earth is strongly driven by the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), which are only measured about one hour before they encounter the Earth's magnetosphere. This means that it is almost impossible to predict the state of the upper atmosphere without predicting the solar wind and IMF. The research grant focused on predicting the solar wind velocity for up to five days ahead of time. A new model of the solar wind velocity was created using probability...

We have investigated a range of equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body phenomena, trapping ultracold atomic gases indifferent geometries including both 3 and 2 spatial dimensions, and with both the conventional harmonic trap and a newly developed box trap. With the 3d harmonic trap, we observed a new superheated Bose-condensed gas which remains condensed above the expected critical temperature, and performed one of the first studies of the strongly-interacting unitary Bose gas. With the 2d...

This research describes a computational study undertaken to determine the effect of a flow control mechanism and its associated aerodynamics for a finned projectile. The flow control system consists of small microflaps located between the rear fins of the projectile. These microflaps alter the flow field in the finned region of the projectile, resulting in asymmetric pressure distribution and thus producing control forces and moments. A number of different geometric parameters, microflap...

There is a dearth of knowledge about the effects of long range aero-medical evacuation on injured organs, as well as an emerging published database suggesting clinically significant adverse effects of hypobaria on even healthy tissues. Cabin pressure is equivalent to an altitude around 8,000ft. at which inspired oxygen is sufficient to maintain blood oxygen saturation above 90 in a healthy individual. In combat casualties with multiple injuries this could however compromise oxygen delivery and...

The contemporary studies of the Kondo effect and heavy-fermion materials occur at the intersection of some of the most important phenomena in quantum condensed matter physics. First, they represent quantum magnetism in between the limits of local-moment and itinerant magnetism. Electronic systems in this intermediate regime are particularly tunable. Correspondingly, heavy fermions have emerged as a promising setting to study the physics of quantum phase transitions and unconventional...
