The pyrolysis of 1-iodopropane has been studied by the Variable Encounter Method(VEM) at temperatures from 625 K to 840 K. Deactivating wall collisions are found to be stronger for this molecule than for the non-polar hydrocarbons previously studied in the same temperature range. Energy transfer collision efficiency declines with rise of wall temperature. The results of this study are compared with earlier steady-state work. (Author)

Obesity, which induces low-grade inflammation, is a known risk factor for worse prognosis in many cancers including breast. We found that sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) produced by sphingosine kinases (SphKs) plays a critical role in obesity-related inflammation and breast cancer. Obesity increased S1P in the tumor microenvironment, as well as in the primary tumors. FTY720, a functional antagonist of S1PR1, dramatically decreased cancer progression by reducing expressions of SphK1 and S1PR1, and...

They do not require the estimation of auxilliary scale or slope parameters nor do they require numerical search techniques to minimize a convex surface. The price is a small asymptotic efficiency loss. In the location model, beginning with a resistant starting value such as the median, the WLS rank estimates have good robustness and computational properties. The WLS rank...

Air and Missile Defense IPB is a systematic continuous process of analyzing the adversarys aerial and Tactical Ballistic Missile (TBM) forces and environment in a specific geographic area and the battlefield around it. By determining the likely adversary courses of action (COAs), their associated branches and sequels, and by describing the environment where air and missile defense forces are operating, this AMD IPB process helps the commander and staff selectively apply and maximize available...

The objective of this research project was to further develop and integrate numerical methods for the fast and accurate simulation of wave propagation problems in the time domain. In support of the long-term goal of creating high-quality software for simulating waves, we seek methods which are not only efficient, but which are reliable in that both their stability and the accuracy of the results are essentially guaranteed. In support of this goal we have developed: (i.) convenient...

This was a study of hot-electron transport, noise, and energy relaxation for doped zinc-oxide and structured ZnO transistor materials with a 2-D electron gas (2DEG) channel subjected to a strong electric field. We conclude that the ZnO 3DEG and 2DEG channels can be operated at the electron density window with better performance than at the off-window electron densities. Models based on the Boltzmann kinetic equation for hot electrons fail to interpret the experimental results unless hot-phonon...

Although there are closed-form solutions for calculating the Probability of False Accept (PFA) and the Probability of False Reject (PFR) of normally distributed measurement errors, there lacks solutions for non-normal distributions. Extending our knowledge to measurement errors that do not follow the normal distribution is beneficial to lowering the risk of having a high PFA or PFR. This research finds that the Uniform Distribution is generally not useful for assessing PFA and PFR.

The upper atmosphere of the Earth is strongly driven by the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), which are only measured about one hour before they encounter the Earth's magnetosphere. This means that it is almost impossible to predict the state of the upper atmosphere without predicting the solar wind and IMF. The research grant focused on predicting the solar wind velocity for up to five days ahead of time. A new model of the solar wind velocity was created using probability...

There is a dearth of knowledge about the effects of long range aero-medical evacuation on injured organs, as well as an emerging published database suggesting clinically significant adverse effects of hypobaria on even healthy tissues. Cabin pressure is equivalent to an altitude around 8,000ft. at which inspired oxygen is sufficient to maintain blood oxygen saturation above 90 in a healthy individual. In combat casualties with multiple injuries this could however compromise oxygen delivery and...

The Army Learning Model (ALM) calls for a re-examination of instructor selection and training. Because the ALM is learner-centric, it specifies that instructors must now become facilitators in a more distributed classroom role. As facilitators, they must acquire skills at tailoring instruction to learners personal characteristics and at employing technology-enabled learning tools. Although the ALM outlines the end-state of the re-examination of instructors, it does not directly address the...

This manuscript describes how to prepare fluidic biochips with Rainbow trout gill epithelial (RTgill-W1) cells for use in a field portable water toxicity sensor. A monolayer of RTgill-W1 cells forms on the sensing electrodes enclosed within the biochips. The biochips are then used for testing in a field portable electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) device designed for rapid toxicity testing of drinking water. The manuscript further describes how to run a toxicity test using the...

The TRADOC Analysis Center (TRAC) seeks to develop a process to compute the operational costs to meet a mission demand. TRAC conducts Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) for acquisitions projects. Besides the Army-proposed capabilities to fulfill a DOTMLPF gap, an AoA can require consideration of joint capability as well. Strick comparisons of the life cycle costs of alternative munitions/systems doesn't always provide a complete picture of the true costs of employment; this is especially true for...
