Oxygen contamination is a potential problem in the study of amorphous metals because of the highly reactive nature of some of the constituent elements of metallic glasses and because of the processing techniques which are used to produce this metastable state. Oxygen is frequently present already in the starting materials, e.g., rare earth elements or early transition metals; further, oxygen present as an impurity in the gaseous atmosphere may be incorporated during alloy preparation (e.g., arc...

Obesity, which induces low-grade inflammation, is a known risk factor for worse prognosis in many cancers including breast. We found that sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) produced by sphingosine kinases (SphKs) plays a critical role in obesity-related inflammation and breast cancer. Obesity increased S1P in the tumor microenvironment, as well as in the primary tumors. FTY720, a functional antagonist of S1PR1, dramatically decreased cancer progression by reducing expressions of SphK1 and S1PR1, and...

In this paper rank estimates, called WLS rank estimates and computed using iteratively reweighted least squares, are studied. They do not require the estimation of auxilliary scale or slope parameters nor do they require numerical search techniques to minimize a convex surface. The price is a small asymptotic efficiency loss. In the location model, beginning with a resistant starting value such as the median, the WLS rank estimates have good robustness and computational properties. The WLS rank...

This paper considers the problem of optimal recovery of an element u of a Hilbert space H from measurements of the form lj(u), j = 1, . . . ,m, where the lj are known linear functionals on H. Problems of this type are well studied [18] and usually are carried out under an assumption that u belongs to a prescribed model class, typically a known compact subset of H. Motivated by reduced modeling for solving parametric partial differential equations, this paper considers another setting where the...

Recent robotics efforts have led to automating simple, repetitive manipulation tasks to speed up execution and lessen an operator's cognitive load, allowing them to focus on higher level objectives. However, the robot will eventually encounter something unexpected, and if this exceeds the tolerance of automated solutions there must be a way to fall back gracefully to teleoperation. The Hawaii West Maui Region (Figure 1) was the focus of Hawaii Regional Sediment Management (RSM) investigations in fiscal year 2014 (Podoski et al., in preparation). The West Maui Region extends from Hanakaoo in the south through Honolua Bay in the north (Figure 2). The conceptual regional sediment budget developed for West Maui indicates that the shoreline has been relatively stable over the past 17 years (1997 through 2014). Portions of sandy shoreline within the region, however, have been...

This document describes the results of the IRIG schema validation task performed under the direction of the RCC TG Data MUX committee. To meet the task objective, a set of user stories, test cases, and instance documents was defined over a subset of intended functionality. The purpose of this task is to create a method for performing IRIG XML schema validation. As opposed to XML instance document validation that determines if an XML instance document conforms to a schema, this method is used to...

The wideband coverage of the traditional fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based electronic warfare (EW) receiver is limited by the sampling frequency of the analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Compressed sensing (CS) based wideband EW digital receiver has been proposed and under development to process wideband sparse signals with reduced sampling rate. In this study, we calculated the sensitivity of a CS-based EW receiver. Two modulation schemes of CS are used. One is pseudorandom chip (PRC) and the...

Recent advances in clustering have included continuous relaxations of the Cheeger cut problem and those which address its linear approximation using the graph Laplacian. In this paper, we show how to use the graph Laplacian to solve the fully nonlinear Cheeger cut problem, as well as the ratio cut optimization task. Both problems are connected to total variation minimization, and the related Ginzburg-Landau functional is used in the derivation of the methods. The graph framework discussed in...

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a New World alphavirus. There is no licensed vaccine for prophylaxis against VEEV. VEEV is highly infectious in aerosolized form and has been identified as a bio-terrorism agent. The current IND vaccine is poorly immunogenic and does not protect against an aerosol challenge with virulent VEEV. We have previously shown that VEEV inactivated by 1,5 iodonaphthy azide (INA) protects against footpad challenge with virulent VEEV. In this study, we...

Cyberspace can provide great opportunities to assist the joint force air component commander (JFACC) in the field. This article explains how the JFACC can best understand, integrate, and command and control (C2) offensive cyber operations into a war plan to produce effects necessary for the mission. The idea of a few keystrokes neutralizing the enemys integrated air defenses will mesmerize just about everyone. Instead of employing a pricey kinetic weapon against a target, a cyber operator can...

Rapid and accurate sensing of fissile materials at long range may require GeV muon or multi-GeV proton primary beams at intensities beyond present technological limits, and in configurations that are robust, simple and transportable. The simultaneous achievement of milliampere proton intensities at multiple GeV energies in a single stage accelerator has never been achieved for any accelerator type, and no basic science or applied application requires it. Hence the science of WMD Sensing and...
