The pyrolysis of 1-iodopropane has been studied by the Variable Encounter Method(VEM) at temperatures from 625 K to 840 K. Deactivating wall collisions are found to be stronger for this molecule than for the non-polar hydrocarbons previously studied in the same temperature range. Energy transfer collision efficiency declines with rise of wall temperature. The results of this study are compared with earlier steady-state work. (Author)

Polytrauma is most often caused from explosive devices and accounts for about 65 percent of injuries to our military personnel. The patients who have polytrauma are at increased risk of developing either bleeding and/or a clot in their veins which cause a life-threatening event known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). We began enrollment of patients into the study on 2 February 2011. As of 1 October 2012, we have successfully enrolled and collected blood samples on 684patients and 64 healthy...

The overall goal of this grant is to establish the role of non-agonist PPAR-gamma ligands as potential therapeutic candidates for lung cancer. In this grant period, we have been able to identify a core gene set that is indicative of the inhibition of the phosphorylation of PPAR gamma in the setting of carboplatin treatment. Using gene set enrichment analysis, we have shown that p53 signaling and the DNA damage response is a key transcriptional target of inhibiting S273 phosphorylation. We have...

We previously found that B cell receptor (BCR)-delivered TLR9 agonists initiate a response involving proliferation followed by abrupt cell death; furthermore, responding cells are rescued by survival cytokines. We posited this as a normal immune response-limiting mechanism that, if thwarted, may lead to persistence of self-reactive antibody-secreting cells. In this proposal we seek to characterize the pathways leading to post-proliferative death and rescue, and to determine how different forms...

No military officer can escape the fact that he or she is a leader. With this charge comes the great responsibility of power. Failure to understand the psychology of this power and use it judiciously deteriorates the trust in the leader/follower relationship. Degraded trust can have lasting impacts on this relationship which can cut deeply enough to negatively impact the mission. Alumina (aluminum oxide, Al2O3) has many favorable properties but is challenging to make transparent because of its anisotropic crystal structure. To combat the anisotropy, magnetic alignment of the particles can be used to minimize the change in index of refraction from grain to grain, thus reducing light scattering and allowing for transparency. Density functional theory results indicated that adding a rare-earth (RE) dopant enhanced the magnetic anisotropy of the alumina crystals, making...

Although significant associations between mTBI and risk of AD have been observed, the precise mechanism by which TBI might lead to AD and/or AD-related symptoms are not yet understood. Histologically, AD is characterized by amyloid- and neurofibrillary protein aggregates, suggesting a loss of protein processing is a key feature of AD. MiRNAs are small non-coding RNA...

Rapid bone loss is a universal accompaniment of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) and leads to severe loss of bone mass and bone strength with a marked increased risk of fracture. This 24 month double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study evaluates in 60 participants the efficacy (bone mass and bone strength)and safety of zoledronic acid administered early after acute SCI to prevent bone loss, the duration of its effects and the value of using biomarkers to guide therapy. Data collection...

A common problem organizations face is determining which security updates to perform and patches to apply to minimize the risk of potential vulnerabilities in their infrastructure. Limited budgets and resources constrain organizations to select a set of the most security critical updates that they can afford to perform; thus, it is very important for vulnerability risks to be computed accurately. The accuracy of these risk assessments improves with the scope of data available; the more attacks...

In this paper, we consider the task of language identification in the context of mismatch conditions. Specifically, we address the issue of using unlabeled data in the domain of interest to improve the performance of a state-of-the-art system. The evaluation is performed on a 9-language set that includes data in both conversational telephone speech and narrowband broadcast speech. Multiple experiments are conducted to assess the performance of the system in this condition and a number of...

We are constantly being asked to do more with less--more research studies with more animals to care for but with less time and fewer employees. How do we continue to keep our quality of care top notch while still meeting the desired pace? Enrichment is the answer. Enrichment reduces animal and employee stress, enhances safety, and increases facility efficiency. Our facility has found Sinclair Miniature Swine are calmer and less stressed if they are provided extra human interaction and...

We have undertaken simulations and calculations on three distinct systems: (1) polyethylene oxide-alkali salts systems with the general formula: PEO6:XPF6, where X = H, Li, or Na; (2) methanol/water solution over a range of methanol mole fractions (0 to 1); and (3)electrolytes for magnesium batteries incorporating chloro- or iodo- ionic liquids. Much of this work was done in collaboration with the experimental group of Prof. Vito Di Noto at the University of Padua, Italy. We have sought to...

Emerging powers have recently become significant players in promoting peace and stability in unstable settings affected by conflict and violence. These countries have the experience, capabilities, and legitimacy to support counterpart governments seeking to build security and safety in their societies. What is more, the High Level Independent Panel on United Nations Peace Operations (HLP) has emphasized the need for peace operations to become more people centered. This is an important...

So began the testimony of General Barrow before the Senate Armed Services Committee in June 1991 regarding his opinion on women in combat during which he gave his ultimate conclusion: women can't do it and there is no military need to put women into combat. (footnote 2) That is about to change. In the wake of women successfully integrating into submarines and graduating from Army Ranger School, an additional--and heretofore underappreciated--factor is poised to alter the women in combat debate:...

The Military faces unique challenges training medical personnel for deployment to combat zones. Pre-deployment, military personnel may not be routinely performing the emergent procedures that they will be expected to perform in theater. The training must be completed during a short period of time and in a hyper-realistic stressful and shocking environment. An understanding of how the training modality impacts the translation of the skills learned in training to actual practice, the degree to...

The convergence of popular wars, ethnic and religious conflict, ideological extremism, and competition over diminishing resources are messy scenarios that defy prescriptive solutions. Yet this messiness is what increasingly defines todays operating environment, requiring adaptive combinations of knowledge and action within a unified interagency framework. In this context, Special Operations Forces (SOF), to include Information Operations and Civil Affairs, plays an increasingly active and...

Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) cause muscle weakness, bone loss, and joint pain in up to half of cancer patients. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that increased osteoclastic bone resorption can impair muscle contractility and prime the bone microenvironment to accelerate metastatic growth. I hypothesized that AI-induced bone loss could increase breast cancer progression in bone and exacerbate muscle weakness associated with bone metastases. Female athymic nude mice underwent ovariectomy (OVX)...

The progression of prostate cancer (PCa) to castrate resistant metastatic disease is an ominous diagnosis. To overcome tumor cell heterogeneity based therapeutic resistance of PCa, the Isaacs/Denmeade laboratories have advocated the use of chemical engineering principles to modify potent killing toxins as molecular grenades, which are delivered systemically and selectively detonated; thereby, liberating their killing toxin efficiently only within the extracellular microenvironment at cancer...

The purpose of this study is to provide a clear understanding of the nexus of crime and terrorism, using the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) as a case study. This terrorist group in the southern part of the Philippines has evolved as a hybrid organization, combining terrorist and criminal activities to achieve its objectives. Moreover, as a terrorist organization, ASG effectively employs criminal tactics for its survival. This group draws its strength and resilience from collusion with various lawless...

Our overarching strategy is to exploit three large neuroimaging/neurobehavioral datasets to identify brain-imaging based biomarkers for Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD). At Yale, we focus on determining if brain networks are influenced by genetic factors and if these genetic factors also influence other traits associated with ASD. Specifically, we will provide heritability estimates and test for pleitropy between putative ASD functional and structural networks and cognitive and behavioral traits....

We have established a powerful system to interrogate CRISPR efficiency in a standard 3 day cell culture transfection system. Our system works exactly as anticipated and we were able to identify potent sgRNAs that target the tumor suppressors p53 and Rb. The lentiviral constructs that we designed and cloned efficiently disrupted a heterologous gene construct containing an mCherry cDNA fused to the sgRNA target. As predicted, we observed variable efficiencies between sgRNAs. Our assay facilitated...
