Stan Rosenberg interviews Evelyn Rivera-Riffenburg, who was appointed human resources director last winter. Rivera-Riffenburg, of Holyoke, was formerly human resources director for the City of Chicopee, and spent 24 years in the private sector. She now oversees hiring efforts in Amherst, and will discuss recent changes to town recruiting and hiring practices. Improvements underway include more standardized procedures, on-line job application software, and developing objective criteria to help search committees identify candidates. (The department's website is here: https://www.amherstma.gov/648/Human-Resources-Human-Rights) Under Amherst's Home Rule Charter, Town Manager Paul Bockelman officially appoints individuals to all open posts (with the exception of town libraries) and the Town Council can approve or reject appointments. Rivera-Riffenburg is reviewing job descriptions as retirements occur and new positions are created. She will outline her philosophy for training leaders and leadership teams, to enhance the employee experience and enable staff to move up the town's career ladder. Rivera-Riffenburg is involved in Amherst's collective bargaining negotiations, including pending contracts with the Service Employee's International Union Local 888, and the Amherst Police Supervisors Union. Rivera-Riffenburg's appointment was approved in January, following the retirement of former human resources director Deborah Radway.
