Robert Alter was born in Brighton, Massachusetts, but moved to Westchester Road in Newton when he was three years old. He was raised near Cabot Park and Edmands Park and the proximity to both heavily influnced his participation in sports and outdoor activities as a child. He talks about his fond experiences growing up around Newton, attending the Newton school system, and briefly leaving Newton as a young adult before returning to his suburban roots.
