The American Libraries collection includes material contributed from across the United States. Institutions range from the Library of Congress to many local public libraries. As a whole, this collection of material brings holdings that cover many facets of American life and scholarship into the public domain. Significant portions of this collection have been generously sponsored by Microsoft, Yahoo!, The Sloan Foundation, and others.

In 1906 the Kentucky General Assembly established two normal schools to train teachers for public schools. Over the past century, through several name changes, the eastern normal school became Eastern Kentucky University. Materials contributed for digitization are from the University's Special Collections and Archives and include the college yearbooks, catalogs and other materials which document the transformation of the university from its beginnings to the present.
