Kaiser Wilhelm Bruecke and Marienkirche
Directly in the back of the photograph stands the Imperial Palace of Berlin. The camera faces the north-east looking onto Kaiser-Wilhelm bridge and into Kaiser-Wilhelm Strasse. In the background the oldest church of Berlin - the mediaval Church of St. Mary (Marienkirche). Bridge and magnificent buildings on Burgstrasse (crossing the view) and the large road (Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse, today Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse) in viewing direction are quite new at the time of taking this image: Due to frequent traffic congestion in Berlin's center the bridge was enlarged and the road was constructed (1887) which meant destruction a number of old buildings and of the Royal Pharmacy - a centuries old wing of the palace. All buildings (but the church) and the bridge were destroyed during WWII.
