Incunabula

The BPL’s incunabula collection embodies the varied output of the 15th-century European printing press. The collection is comprised of 574 physical items printed during the 15th century, the majority of which are books (issued either individually or as parts of multi-volume sets). The collection also contains a small number of single-sheet publications, blockbooks, and fragments of books that merit individual cataloging. In total, there are 550 discrete 15th-century editions represented.

In addition, the collection also contains seven leaf books, which, taken as a group, comprise over 300 individual specimen leaves printed before December 31, 1500. A further 17 editions, formerly thought to have been printed before 1501, but more recently ascribed to later dates, are also included.

Highlights of the incunabula collection include the Latin Bibles of Johannes Mentelin (no later than 1460), and Heinrich Eggestein (1469), along with the German Bibles of Gunther Zainer (1475), Anton Koberger (1483), and Heinrich Quentell (1478); the 1473 Rome printing of Maimonides' Moreh Nevukhim, several specimens of the so-called Dutch prototypography, Caxton's Golden Legend, Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (1499), the first printed edition of Homer's works (1488), the first printed edition of Aristotle's works in the original Greek (1495-1498), and both the Brescia and Florence printings of Dante's Divine Comedy (1487 and 1481 respectively).

Critical funding to support long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to Boston Public Library collections, including this one, was provided by the Associates of the Boston Public Library.

Higden's work, divided into 7 books and extending to the year 1348, was originally written in Latin. The English translation was made by John Trevisa, who continued it to 1357. The 8th book, 1358-1460, was added by Caxton, who in 1482 printed the work from Trevisa's translation, revising the antiquated text. This edition is a reprint of Caxton's edition; the text is unaltered and unextended. De Worde's only additions were a better Table and the insertion of the woodcut music (spaces left blank...

A collection of sonnets on the navigation of the Aegean archipelago, this is also thought to be the first printed book to contain navigational sea charts. There are 48 woodcut charts, two of which are double-page illustrations. Leaves [a]1 recto-[a]3 recto contain a dedicatory epistle, in verse, to the Doge Giovanni Mocenigo, his name being disguised in an acrostic.
