The Thomas Pennant Barton Collection is acknowledged as one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in a public institution focusing on the writings of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. This, the first edition of the collected plays of William Shakespeare, is commonly known as the First Folio. Printed in London and issued in 1623 by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount, the First Folio contains 36 plays, 18 of which had never before appeared in print, including Macbeth, The Tempest, and Julius Caesar. Before the First Folio, a number of Shakespeare's plays had been published in various smaller formats that frequently contained significant textual divergences between editions.

This, the first edition of a work commonly known as Holinshed's Chronicles, was issued under four variant imprints, each bearing the name of a different bookseller (J. Harrison, L. Harrison, J. Hunne, G. Bishop). According to Pforzheimer, "many copies have been made-up by later owners who combined parts having different imprints." In this copy the peculiarities of format, printing, and publication ascribed to the first edition, second state of vol. 1 are all present. In particular, leaves X4, a4, and b2 are not cancelled.
