November 1, 2019 - No Place Like Home Topic: Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP)
No Place Like Home is a TV show sponsored by the Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County. The show spotlights topical subjects each month geared towards home ownership and housing. The program is co-hosted by Karmen Lemberg, Program Administrator with the Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County and Julian Hills, Public Information Officer with Pinellas County Marketing and Communications Department.
This month we turn our focus to one of Pinellas County's most impactful non-profit agencies. Our guests are HEP founder, Barb Green, and Ashley Lowery, President and CEO of HEP. The Homeless Empowerment program, or HEP, is a full-service homeless sheltering program that has been providing assistance to the local homeless population since 1986. Barb Green and her husband, the late Rev. Otis C. “Preacher” Green, began their mission to end homelessness in the 1960’s at the Clearwater church, Everybody’s Tabernacle, where Otis was the pastor. A family with three children within the congregation was in need of a home, after the father got injured at work. Barb and Otis allowed the family to live in a house they owned rent free, while they got back on their feet. Word spread about the charitable acts of the church and soon, Barb and Otis were running a large shelter program, providing food and housing to those in need. In 1986, Barb and Otis founded HEP, Inc. to better meet the immediate needs of a growing number of homeless individuals and families in Pinellas County.
